A Brief History of FACTNet
From protecting people against coercion to helping humanity navigate the Great Reckoning and build the Great Rebirth
FACTNet is a U.S. IRS-recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit educational organization founded in 1993. Its history is one of continuing adaptation: as new threats to human freedom, well-being, and survival emerged, FACTNet expanded its public-education mission to address them.
FACTNet’s work began with education about coercive influence and abusive high-control organizations. It was one of the first organizations in the world to offer help to families and victims of high-control groups, often called destructive cults. At one point, while doing this work, it had accumulated over 3 million posts in its discussion forum covering scores of different high-control groups.
It later expanded into healthy spiritual exploration, climate-change education, polycrisis research, rational thinking and advanced problem-solving, local resilience, progressive evolutionary philosophy, and the long-term renewal of human civilization.
Today, information and experience from these and other areas are united within one practical educational pathway:

1993–2002: Exposing Coercive Influence and Protecting the Public
FACTNet was founded during the early growth of the public Internet to educate people about coercive persuasion, deceptive recruitment, psychological manipulation, and abusive practices within high-control organizations and extremist movements.
Its educational work examined allegations and documented experiences involving organizations such as Scientology, the Unification Church—often called the Moonies—certain Hare Krishna organizations, neo-Nazi groups, and other groups associated with coercive or abusive behavior. FACTNet also helped people understand how similar influence tactics can appear in political, commercial, social, and religious settings.
The central principle was simple: people should have access to reliable information before surrendering their money, labor, relationships, personal autonomy, or freedom of conscience to any organization or leader.
Preserving an Important Historical and Legal Archive
FACTNet became one of the largest early online repositories of information about coercive influence and high-control organizations. Its bulletin-board-style discussion system eventually contained approximately three million posts, while its broader electronic collection grew to tens of thousands of pages.
As other organizations developed specialized programs in this field, FACTNet shared materials with newer cult-education and coercive-influence resources. It also transferred more than 300 bankers boxes of significant litigation records to a major university archive, made its extensive electronic database available for preservation, and ensured that important portions were captured by the Internet Archive.
This preserved material remains potentially valuable to historians, researchers, journalists, attorneys, former members, families, and others studying coercive persuasion, institutional abuse, and the early history of online public-interest education.
The Personal Risks of the Early FACTNet Work
FACTNet’s coercive-influence education was difficult and sometimes dangerous. Its websites experienced persistent hacking attempts, while staff members received serious threats connected to their efforts to expose alleged abuse and harmful organizational practices.
At times, the level of concern was so high that some staff members wore protective vests or carried lawfully licensed concealed weapons. These experiences reinforced one of FACTNet’s enduring commitments: public education must protect freedom of conscience, encourage healthy boundaries, and help people recognize manipulation before serious harm occurs.
2002: From Protection Against Spiritual Abuse to Healthy Spiritual Exploration
By 2002, other organizations were increasingly able to continue the specialized work of cult education and former-member support. FACTNet therefore shifted much of its active educational focus toward Universe Spirit.
Universe Spirit was created to explore a constructive question arising from FACTNet’s earlier work: If some religious and spiritual environments become unhealthy, coercive, or authoritarian, what principles support spiritual exploration that is healthy, ethical, self-directed, and safe?
Universe Spirit developed educational material on healthy and unhealthy spiritual practices, freedom of conscience, direct personal exploration, ethical development, and humanity’s relationship to the universe. It did not require loyalty to a teacher, doctrine, organization, or spiritual claim.
During much of this period, Universe College operated as a free online educational program. Universe Spirit also established Universe Day, an annual celebration honoring the beauty, origin, creativity, and continuing evolution of the universe.
2009: Confronting the Climate-Change Emergency
In 2009, FACTNet expanded its mission by creating Job One For Humanity, a public-education program focused on climate reality, climate-change solutions, emergency preparation, adaptation, resilience-building, and migration planning when necessary.
This expansion reflected a growing recognition that climate change threatened not only ecosystems but also food and water security, economies, political stability, public health, local communities, and the future of civilization.
Job One For Humanity continues to emphasize two responsibilities that must be pursued together: humanity must reduce global fossil-fuel use as rapidly as possible, and individuals and communities must prepare for the serious climate consequences that can no longer be fully avoided.
The goal is neither denial nor despair. It is practical hope grounded in honest information, responsible preparation, and effective action.
2011: Expanding from Climate Change to the Global Polycrisis
In 2011, FACTNet established the Universe Institute to research major global problems and develop more effective ways to understand and solve them.
Universe Institute examines the global polycrisis: the interacting system of climate disruption, ecological overshoot, resource pressures, economic fragility, political instability, conflict, authoritarianism, misinformation, technological risk, and weakening institutions. These crises do not operate separately. They interact, reinforce one another, and create consequences that cross personal, local, national, and global scales.
To address this complexity, Universe Institute adopted Dialectical Metasystemic Analysis and Problem-solving (DMAP). DMAP helps researchers and decision-makers examine complex, evolving problems from multiple perspectives, recognize relationships and transformations, identify missing information, and develop more complete solutions.
Universe Institute’s educational mission now connects polycrisis literacy with basic, intermediate, and advanced rational thinking; systems thinking; DMAP; progressive evolutionary theory; civilization-scale problem-solving; and human-friendly AI training.
2025: Creating a Practical Philosophy for Humanity’s Hardest Century
In 2025, FACTNet expanded again by establishing The Way of the Universe.
The Way of the Universe is being developed as a practical, rational, and science-grounded philosophy for living and acting during the global polycrisis. It focuses on right action, right attitude, cooperation, responsibility, ecological balance, service, the protection of future generations, and the long-term common good.
It also applies key principles of progressive evolution to human institutions and behavior. These include making people and organizations more accountable for the consequences of their actions, aligning incentives with the common good, supporting genuine contributors, limiting exploitation and deliberate free-riding, protecting cooperative systems from capture, and strengthening cooperation from local to global scales.
FACTNet is moving its secular philosophy and progressive-evolution materials to The Way of the Universe. This allows Universe Spirit to concentrate on safe, non-coercive exploration of meaning, consciousness, inner resilience, and humanity’s deepest existential and spiritual questions.
2026 and Beyond: One Integrated Pathway Through the Great Reckoning
Humanity is now entering a dangerous transitional period in which climate disruption and the wider global polycrisis are converging and intensifying. FACTNet calls this transitional period the Great Reckoning.
FACTNet’s goal is not merely to help people endure disruption. Its larger purpose is to help preserve the best of humanity and cultivate the knowledge, capacities, values, relationships, and institutions needed for a more resilient, cooperative, just, sustainable, and life-affirming future.
We call this future possibility Humanity’s Great Rebirth.
Beginning in 2026, FACTNet launched a major upgrade of its four primary educational websites. This work includes editing, simplifying, reorganizing, and integrating thousands of pages into one understandable learning pathway:
1. Job One For Humanity
Face climate reality and strengthen practical resilience. Learn about the climate emergency, preparation, adaptation, local resilience, fossil-fuel reduction, and migration planning when needed.
2. Universe Institute
Understand the polycrisis and learn to think better. Develop polycrisis literacy, rational thinking, systems thinking, DMAP, advanced problem-solving, and the capacity to make wiser decisions under uncertainty.
3. The Way of the Universe
Translate better understanding into ethical action. Explore a practical philosophy of right action, right attitude, evolutionary responsibility, cooperation, service, ecological balance, and civilizational renewal.
4. Universe Spirit
Deepen meaning and inner resilience without coercion or dogma. Explore consciousness, spiritual experience, healthy boundaries, ethical maturity, Original Blessing, and the possibility that the universe’s origin or deepest nature may also be present within us.
FACTNet also plans to rebuild Universe College, resources permitting, as the shared educational platform for self-directed courses developed by the four websites. Universe College would offer noncredit public-education programs rather than accredited academic degrees.
Together, these programs provide a graduated path from awareness to understanding, from understanding to preparation and right action, and from right action to Humanity’s Great Rebirth.
One Enduring Principle
FACTNet’s mission has expanded considerably since 1993, but one principle has remained constant: people deserve the information, thinking skills, freedom, and practical tools needed to protect themselves and make wiser choices.
The early FACTNet helped people recognize coercive organizations and protect their freedom of conscience. Today’s FACTNet also helps people recognize dangerous global systems, understand their consequences, prepare for disruption, cooperate more effectively, and participate in building a better future.
The subject matter has expanded. The underlying commitment to truth, human freedom, public education, and the reduction of preventable harm has not.

The next challenge is to transform that foundation into clear, accessible guides, courses, decision tools, resilience resources, and connected learning pathways that people can use during the Great Reckoning.
