Is Smoking Marijuana A Sin

I am asking this question of you that are frequent readers of the site. I am struggling with my spirituality, and am trying to live closer to God...I experience my revelation under the influence of marijuana...and when i am smoking is the time that i pray more, read more, and try to understand more about the glory of God. I am wondering how can that be a sin if it is bringing me closer to Him? Give me honest answers, not a bible verse that seems like it could coincide with my situation. Thank you

Since marijuana is a mind-altering substance, are you sure that you are closer to God or only that you <u>feel</u>closer to God.I'm betting that it's only your your mind under the influence that "feels" closer.

Look at the scriptures....If you've asked Christ into your heart as your Saviour, you're already close to God after all He died for you . He has to love you an awful lot to do that.We can't possibly do the "work" to get close to God, He has already done the work Himself on the cross.
In order to gain more knowlege of Him of course you must pray and read the Word, but since M.J. is a mind-altering substance, it's going to muddy up what your brain is going to recieve. It's like people who drive drunk thinking that they are great drivers, right up to the point where they do a head-on into a wall. Please stop doing it. God has graciously provided the Holy Spirit to guide and His Word to instruct. Nothing else is required. As a caveat, I'm no theologian, but this is the way I see it as instructed in His Word

I can't answer your question without referring to Bible verse since the Bible is our instruction book from God on how to discern right and wrong.

Just because fou feel like you are getting closer to God doesn't mean that you are. Satan is also a spirit and is very deceptive. The Bible warns us that he can appear as an Angel of light. The anti-Christ will also be an evil person who will masquarade as the Messiah. Feelings and spirits can be deceptive. That's why God gave us his Word.

Look at how decieved Alamo is. Here's a guy that rapes young girls in the name of the Lord. He's been so turned over to a reprobate mind that he thinks he feels the spirit while he's raping a 13 year old girl.

I'm not trying to equate you with Tony by any means, I'm just showing how deceitful a satanic spirit can be. And the importance of searching the Word of God for your answer which I believe is very clear.

Getting high on pot or anything else is a form of drunkenness. Drunkenness is not limited to alcohol. It can be anything that impairs your senses. Here's what the Bible says about drunkenness.

"Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober. For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that be drunken are drunken in the night. But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation" (1 Thes. 5:6-8).

"Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, ... drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God" (Gal. 5:19-21).


According to the Bible there are two ways we can know we are saved. One is by his Spirit and the other is because we keep his commandments. You have to have both. A feeling of closeness to God is false if you get it while breaking his commandments by being in a drunken state.

That's why we are told to try the spirits and to examine ourselves. We examine ourselves by comparing ourselves to the standards set for us in the Bible.

We can read whatever we want into the Bible but just remember that our judgement will be based on what God meant not on what we thought or wanted it to mean.

It's not worth it to gamble with your eternal soul.

Now this is a topic I can appreciate.

here are few points from someone who actually has experience(more recent then 30 yrs ago)in this arena, has actually studied the uses and properties of; and isn't using a naturally occuring herb to escape, fit in, rebel against the "man", or any of the many other undeducated and capricious reasons that so many have used; but rather as something to be used medicinaly, recreaionally, and in moderation.

1. in the first book of the bible(which the X-foundationers love to quote so much), first chapter: "And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat." Ding! Ding! Ding!
plain as day, clear as water, simple as pimples!
How can that be soo hard to understand? Oh wait, don't tell me; there is probably some (private)interpretation that I, in my "mind altered" state am not able to comprehend, right? haha!...seriously?...we aren't talking about pyschedelics here, but if we were......never mind, that is a topic for another time with those who are not so rigid in their "faith" and restricted by their dogma.
Also, there is no mention of it anywhere in the bible, whatsoever!(besides the one broad reference above). And stop trying to use the drunkeness scriptures! Weed does not make you drunk! In fact, it is nothing like being drunk at all; the closest description would probably be, that it makes you relax and calm down. About the same(maybe a little stronger)as a long soak in a hot tub.

2. What is harmful about marijuana?? compared to let's say achohol; do any of you who posted replies to this question drink....even a little?
Or perhaps even refined sugars, processed foods, coffee, sodas, candy, energy drinks, Rx and non Rx drugs, etc...these are all drugs! And they are all far more harmful to the body...by far(except maybe coffee, that one in moderation might be okay; but the rest, even a little is a dangerous amount).
Alchohol alone, kills many people, yet it is legal, and a HUGE business. There are many chemicals, additives, hormones, preservatives, etc.. added to most(if not all)of the food and drink that you put in your body; these things, while not immediately fatal do cause much dis-ease and illness and do kill the body, they just do it slowly and expensively.
Name one person you know, that died from ingesting Mary Jane....that wasn't on something else, as well.

If it wasn't illegal, the government wouldn't be making so much money off of it, as it is soo easy to grow and maintain, that just about anybody could do it themselves. But, by making it illegal, they make money from growing it, bringing into the country, controlling the price of it, busting people for it, imprisoning people for it, reselling it back to the people(the number one mover of drugs, are local law enforcement agencies, who sell it, bust you for it, confiscate the "evidence", then sell it back into the community...don't believe me? do your own re-search)and so on and so on.

So say what you will, but don't quote the bible as a source, to condemn the use of marijuana. If you don't like, just say you don't like it! If you disagree with it because it is illegal, just admit that you follow the laws of mammon.
And if you are gonna pretend to know about it, AT LEAST do a little homework, otherwise you just make yourself look ignorant.

I am hesitant to even comment on this topic for fear of being labeled a "pot head" but after I considered the era most of you old timers come from I am sure you can understand my perspective.

We are all spiritual beings created fragile and insignificant compared to our Father. The human brain, although extremely complex to us, is not capable of the kind of enlightenment that only being next to our Father can bring. As spiritual beings we crave to be close to Him and over thousands of years mankind has sought new ways to do that. Look at the Native Americans. Perhaps marijuana opens a closed mind.

My opinion is that marijuana, if not abused/used in excess, is not harmful to the body so it probably isn't "wrong". Alcohol, however, if not used in moderation can be extremely damaging to the body. If our body is our temple then we need to look at the things we are putting in it.

PSS - this is another example of what is not clearly defined in the Bible and open for interpretation, like the polygamy topic. I remember at one time them thinking (adults or anyone over 30) we were flashing the V for victory, beings we were at war in Viet Nam. It was'nt but a short time later they new that wasn't our reasons.

It was back then when most finally did become aware about such things as these, and things we thought of as all peacefull and good soon began to unwind. Before long all our smiles had turned upside down to frowns, and Gods little boy was'nt so happy anymore.

Soon there after when the peach fuzz had finally thickened, I was then forced to shave like a man. Now it just didn't up and happen over night or anything but the lessons were finally learned.

For any who might contend that praying to God while high is a noble cause, I say you might want to investigate into seeing about having your head fully examined.

I sort of liken the thought of praying to God while high, as that of a drunk who only phones his Dad when he's drunk off his A$$.

Obviously you're not an ex pothead from the 70s like myself. Anyone that has smoked enough of this stuff, and the best of this suff, as I have, one would know that smoking pot in moderation is actually more intoxicating than smoking it in quanity. One can only get so high on this stuff. The more one smokes, the more one tends to lose that 'BUZZ'. I have smoked pot where one hit caused me to be bad stoned for 4-6 hours. I have also smoked 2 to 4 joints of primo weed in a row and actually came down off my buzz rather quickly.
The same thing can't be said about alchohol consumption. The more you drink, the drunker you get, and if you drink too much, you can actually die from alchohol poisoning, (I think that's the term used?).

Is smoking pot a sin? I have no clue. It's not listed in the Bible as a sin. I can't imagine why God would send a Christian to hell because he or she smokes pot. Can or does a real Christian smoke pot? It wouldn't suprise me if they did.

Jargon, have you not done research on pot to see the effects it has over period of time. It actually kills brain cells. It is very harmful to the lungs compared to just a regular cigarette. It fries one brains, alcohol on the other hand used in moderation or for medical purposes has no lasting damage, used in access cause cirrohis of the liver and other things. I for one abstain from all unless I take cough syrup to get rid of congession in my throat and lungs.

Obviously you're not an ex pothead from the 70s like myself. Anyone that has smoked enough of this stuff, and the best of this suff, as I have, one would know that smoking pot in moderation is actually more intoxicating than smoking it in quanity. One can only get so high on this stuff. The more one smokes, the more one tends to lose that 'BUZZ'. I have smoked pot where one hit caused me to be bad stoned for 4-6 hours. I have also smoked 2 to 4 joints of primo weed in a row and actually came down off my buzz rather quickly.
The same thing can't be said about alchohol consumption. The more you drink, the drunker you get, and if you drink too much, you can actually die from alchohol poisoning, (I think that's the term used?).

Is smoking pot a sin? I have no clue. It's not listed in the Bible as a sin. I can't imagine why God would send a Christian to hell because he or she smokes pot. Can or does a real Christian smoke pot? It wouldn't suprise me if they did.

Jargon, have you not done research on pot to see the effects it has over period of time. It actually kills brain cells. It is very harmful to the lungs compared to just a regular cigarette. It fries one brains, alcohol on the other hand used in moderation or for medical purposes has no lasting damage, used in access cause cirrohis of the liver and other things. I for one abstain from all unless I take cough syrup to get rid of congession in my throat and lungs.

Dob it sounds Like I being missed a little. I do not know how to take that. Fact is where am I trying to hibernate for winter. Did you know turtles hibernate. I got nothing to add to these post these days. You haven't tried to really engage me in a good conversation, you always avoid the subject you ask question about. So what if some days I sound 102 and other days i sound 20 what the big deal. You know you are older then me. So when am I going to get back to preaching, when I am asked to speak again. I preach every week you know on my website. Everyday in fact. Then I come here and you love messing with my mind. Almost as if this dope thread could sound for real after a day on the computer. Then at the end of one summer before school started again we decided to have a big last harah party out at the old barn. There was the whole bunch of us gathered for this last big event. We all got pretty juiced as with it being our last big harah. It didn't take long for us to dream up a real special event. Why we felt is would be most befitting being it was our last Harah. So we all joined in and lit a fire to burn the old barn down. I can still vision thoughs flames reaching 70 feet in the air, as we really did have a real barn burner of a time.

But those were the days, and those were our ways. the whole bunch nothing but wild kids having the times of their life.

Many church groups have no trouble with alcohol, I for one abstain from it, but have I ever drank, sure i admitted that on another thread. Yet to tell the truth it was a very short period of my life, like a teenage fad.

The other day I read a preachers sermon. And to tell you truth this guy is very good. But the jest of his sermon was this. It was about asking the preacher a question. And of course over the years the minister had learn to say why you ask that for? Well my only reply some people would take that in bad taste for one reason. It really makes the person sound stupid dont' you think. I mean is he trying hard to look superior. I think not. I think the fact is he doesnt' really know the answer even when he is givent he reason what for. Yet so often times we dont' have the answer. Yet God often provides in strange ways. He ends his sermon with a question of his own and I would like to do that here and now. Are you saved?? Now Dob I know you answer but others read these threads and either they got a turned off ear or they are listening to our words. Either way is fine with me it is no sweat off my back. Yet I do cry many of tears of lost one's out there looking to find there way. The fact is what if you die to night do you know where you spend eternity? The fact is when you get saved you know and if you are not you know it sure isnt' heaven. Now that maybe not what one wants to here but it is the truth. And the truth will set you free. World God loves you. Loves you more then dob or I could.

Actually I cheated, Sometimes I do a double take on big words even when I think I know the meaning, half the time one be surprise how large words are use in slang incorrectly. Anyway that was one of the words that was listed. And actually is not longer the longest word as I stated but would of been in the seventies. Yes Mary Poppins even had a song called it. It is actually a nonsense word, so we must be made up of some nonsense.
