I have just learned of a group called the City Wide Church. It is located in the Montreal area and consists of a commune of families, living together, homeschooling, etc. They are bible and torah oriented I think. Has anyone else heard of them? Are they a cult?

I never heard of them however, they sound like a cult to me. Just my opinion....when people need a "compound", something is wrong ! I was raised in a cult.

I visited them. When I did they were a family, husband, wife and 7 children who had been gathering with other believers. At one time they had taken in another family that also had 7 children. They helped the other family until they were able to get their own home. Some of the single brothers were renting rooms at one of the homes. I saw them as compassionate and caring people with no bizarre teachings, quite knowledgable about scriptures and the Hebrew language and hospitable.
Since I was there the 3 single brothers have moved away and they have not been gathering as a community lately. If anything my experience of them is they would not want anyone to be controlled by them but would want people to have self control.
To me living together and homeschooling and being Bible and Torah oriented are good things.

I think you, formercalvarymember, based on the information given on this site previous to your post, are jumping to an erroneous presumption that they need a compound. What is it based on what has been said that makes you think this? Do they live in a compound? What is a compound? (sounds like a Branch Dividian slur). If people need or choose to live with other people does that mean there is something wrong with doing it? Do people need to live appart and is there something right about it if they do live appart? Come clean man/woman!

I wonder if they called the early christians a cult. They lived communally and had strange beliefs. They also had strange powers.
People hated them. They tortured and killed them. I guess they thought they were a cult. That made it alright to persecute them.
