Ecleo cult a mix of great faiths, the occult

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — Former mayor Ruben Ecleo Jr. of San Jose, Surigao del Norte, is a wanted man. He is accused of killing his own wife Alona in Cebu last January and has been ordered arrested to stand trial for parricide.

But he is not merely a politician or a son of Surigao del Norte Rep. Glenda Ecleo. He is the “supreme president” of a Mindanao-based cult with members willing to die for their “master.”

Such zealotry could be attributed to Ecleo’s late father Ruben Sr. from whom the ex-mayor inherited the cult’s mantle of leadership.

For 37 years, the Surigao del Norte-based Ecleo cult, Philippine Benevolent Mi­ssio­naries Association (PBMA), has been preaching a doctrine lifted from the teachings of Christianity, Buddhism and Hinduism mixed with occultism and astrology.

Founders

It was the late Ruben Ecleo Sr. who started it all.
In 1965, the “divine master” and a handful of his followers formally orga­nized the PBMA in Ozamiz City.

Its incorporators were Ecleo, Arsenio Nazareno of Calbayog, Francisco Enerio of Misamis Orien­tal, Floro Caboverde of Zamboanga City, Carlos Lomanta of Ozamiz, Maximo Ravelo of Davao Oriental; Pedro Mon­tives of Leyte, Dionisio Cui of Davao del Norte, Victo­riano Rafols of Lanao del Norte, and Eusebio Ban­divas, Casiano Gorrea and Maximo Caboverde of Zamboanga del Norte.

The elder Ecleo’s “missio­nary work,” however, started much earlier than 1965.

First Apostles

Between 1958 and 1963, the years Ecleo supposedly immersed himself in his “missionary work.” Thus, the “divine master” collected the apostles who referred to as the “First Thirteen.”

Two PBMA incorporators, Nazareno and Enerio, were among the Ecleo apostles. The others were Cipriano Otero of Gingoog City, his wife’s brother Ruben Buray of Misamis Oriental, cousins George and Cupertino Edera of Basilisa and Martin Laturnas of Bohol, Ignacio Sombrado of Bohol, Teo­doro Regacion of Leyte, Pedro Toquib of Bukidnon and Benjamin Ratonil of Cebu.

The “First Thirteen,” like the early New Testament apostles, were sent out by Ecleo to preach, “heal” the sick and recruit followers.

Mystical childhood

The PBMA claims Ecleo started his “mission” as early as 1941 when the PBMA founder was still a boy. At eight, it said the boy Ruben had “reached far places on mission” and that he had received “dictations from the spiritual realm” in the mountains of northern Leyte at the age of 11.

He began his “full mission” a year later, when he was already 12.

The “dictations,” accor­ding to the PBMA, came in the form of a voice from Devachan while Ecleo was meditating, surrounded by “pythons, deadly insects, venomous vipers and reptiles.”

Devachan, in Indian, is the equivalent of the word “paradise” to Christians, a second heaven for the soul and a place of rest to Buddhists.

The PBMA also claims Ecleo was guided by the Arhat and taught by the Avatar.

Arhat is a Buddhist term for “worthy one” or “destroyer of the foe (ignorance),” a title given to those who have achieved “Nirvana” which is the state wherein a man is believed to have been freed from suffering or from the cycle of birth and death. In Hindu usage, Avatar refers to any incarnation of the god Vishnu. Used generally, it refers to any descent of a god into the world in human form

PBMA founder a ‘Christ-like’ figure

CAGAYAN DE ORO — “Voices” trained Philippine Benevolent Missionaries Association (PBMA) founder Ruben Ecleo Sr. in reading and writing in Arabic, Hebrew, Sanskrit and Aramaic so he could “interpret the ancient mysteries,” according to cult members.

The father of wanted former San Jose mayor Ruben Jr. was known to make predictions based on “Akashic Records” or, in Hindu mysticism, “cosmic consciousness.” His continuing messianic mystique plays a major role in on-going drama on Dinagat, a small island off the northeastern point of the Mindanao mainland. There, cult members willing to die for their master are thwarting police efforts to arrest Ru­ben Jr., cu­rrent lea­der of PB­MA and son of Suri­gao del Norte Rep. Glenda Ecleo, who is wanted for the January murder of his wife, Alona, in Cebu last January.

Like Jesus

Cult leaders say the older Ecleo had possessed the powers to be omnipresent like the “Master Jesus [Christ] who had been in the Americas, Egypt, India and in his native Judea simultaneously, aside from being in the monastery in the Essenean School, near Mount Serbal, overlooking the Black Sea.” Mainstream Christian sects have rejected such teaching.

The cultists claim Ecleo “could do almost anything” by reciting the Mantra which, in Hinduism and Buddhism, refers to a sacred word or syllable repeated in prayer and meditation.

And like the biblical Jesus Christ, the PBMA leader can also transfigure himself and can even resurrect the dead, according to the cult.

“Master Ruben can materialize anywhere at will,” claims the PBMA. It said Ecleo, on numerous occasions since his childhood, had been present in various places at the same time. “While performing his missionary work in Agusan, he was also physically traveling somewhere in Davao, Bukidnon, Leyte and Samar, using different names (and) perhaps different faces, some of whom are old or young identities ...”

The cult said “all manifested perso­na­lities” — with nick­names such as Ben, Obing, Fred, Freddie, Ruben, Tony and Dr. Laway — had cured the sick like the “Lord Jesus who first applied these po­wers in Judea ...”

PBMA leaders say Ecleo’s healing powers directly come from “our Divine Father by virtue of the sacred or divine prayers which are called in Occultism as Mantras.”

Dynasty

Ecleo Sr. built for himself and his family a “kingdom” on impove­rished Dinagat, a small, irregular and typhoon-prone island mass off the northeastern tip of Mindanao.

Since it was chartered in 1965, the late cult leader’s PBMA virtually turned the entire island into an “Ecleo Country.” The cult also became a powerful political machinery that it created, wittingly or unwittingly, a dynasty for the Ecleos.

Ecleo’s elder brother, Moises, became a governor of Surigao del Norte. His wife, the former Glenda Oliveros Buray of Gitagum, Misamis Oriental, is now a representative of Surigao del Norte to the Lower House while his son Ruben Jr. was one-time mayor of San Jose town. Another Ecleo son, Allan II, is presently mayor of the same town where the PBMA solidified its base.

On San Jose now stand four multimillion-peso PBMA land­marks — the “Divine Master’s Shrine,” “Master’s Mansion,” “Comet House” and the cult’s administration building.

The San Jose edifices are indications that the PBMA has grown into a multimillion-peso, if not a billionaire establishment.

Rich group

It is estimated that the PBMA has already raised at least P35 million in en­tran­ce fees from its members since 1965. The figure is insig­nificant if one considered the estimated P70-million annual revenue the PBMA generates by imposing annual dues on its members in the country.
The PBMA charter obliges each new member to pay P10 as “entrance fee.” Every year, each PBMA member is expected to pay a P20 annual fee.

The PBMA boasts of having 3.5 million members in the country alone. It claims it also has members in Jordan, Canada, Australia, Palau, Hong Kong, Guam, Singapore, Malaysia, London, Italy, Monaco, Germany, Hawaii, New York and Scotland, among others. The group claims it is also organizing more PBMA chapters abroad.

Aside from its fixed entrance- and annual-fee incomes, the PBMA charter also encourages members to voluntarily give money “when the Board of Directors or the Supreme President ... may desire to plead to the general members for the good or the betterment of the association.”

The association’s constitution and by-laws is silent on the sale of PBMA rings but a Surigao City-based source said all its members are expected to wear one for identification.

Each PBMA ring, according to the source, costs somewhere “between P50 to P100, more or less.”

Little government

With all the money the PBMA rakes in, not to mention the influence it wields over Dinagat, nearby towns and neighboring Surigao City, it has virtually become a little government in its own right with a well-greased “private army,” ironically, on the impoverished Surigao del Norte island. “Many of the PBMA members living in Dinagat are armed,” said a Surigao-based source who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The source said the armed PBMA members have made an oath to protect the “master,” referring to Ecleo’s son and successor Ruben Jr. who is facing a lawsuit in connection with the grisly murder of his wife, the former Alona Bacolod. Alona, who died by strangulation, was found inside a garbage bag dumped in a secluded area in Cebu last January.
Agents of the National Police’s Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) who were sent to Dinagat island last week complained they failed to serve an arrest warrant against the parricide suspect because residents have been protecting the PBMA “master.”

The Cebu-based CIDG team also accused the entire San Jose police force of coddling Ruben Jr. who is believed hiding inside the Ecleo mansion in San Jose town.

“That’s the extent of the influence of the Ecleos in Dinagat. They even control the police,” another source said.

23 slain as Philippines cult leader nabbed

Twenty-three people died in a night of violence which erupted as Philippine police went to arrest the politically connected leader of a messianic cult accused of murdering his wife.

Ruben Ecleo (47), finally surrendered on Wednesday after hours of bloody fighting between police and his armed followers at their commune on the southern island of Dinagat, regional police chief Alberto Olario said.

Sixteen members of Ecleo's pseudo-Christian Philippine Benevolent Missionaries Association (PBMA), including a co-defendant in the murder case, were killed after they tried to prevent police from arresting the two men, Chief Superintendent Olario said.

A policeman also died and two were wounded, part of a massive police force that assaulted the island on Tuesday night.

As the operation was underway on Dinagat, a PBMA member armed with a machinegun broke into the home of Ecleo's in-laws in Mandaue district near here, killing Ecleo's father-in-law Elpidio Bacolod, his wife Rosalia, their son Ben and daughter Evelyn.

A neighbour was also killed while Bacolod's other son Ricky was wounded, police said.

The gunman was himself slain after a fire-fight with government forces, while a government militiaman was wounded, police said.

Ben Bacolod was a government witness in the murder case against Ecleo, police said.

***Ecleo is considered by followers to be the reincarnation of Jesus Christ.

His father, also named Ruben, founded the PBMA in 1965 and assumed the title of "Divine Master" with claimed powers of healing, mental telepathy, as well as the ability to communicate through dreams and to predict natural calamities and the rise and fall of governments.

The group's website claims 3,5 million members in 15 countries, and said the elder Ecleo had "re-appeared" four days after his death in 1987 and also had powers to revive the dead.

The remains of the younger Ecleo's wife were found stuffed in a black garbage bag at the bottom of a cliff in the south of Cebu island on January 30.

Police said the 27-year-old woman had been strangled.

Cult leader's suitcase yields 'shabu'

CEBU CITY - Cult leader Ruben Ecleo Jr. is in for more trouble.

Three small packs containing shabu (methamphetamine hydrochloride) were found in his luggage after he was committed to the Bagong Buhay Rehabilitation Center (BBRC).

Chief Insp. Oscar Capanas found the three packs hidden in a bar of Ivory bath soap in Ecleo's green suitcase.

The soap bar was resealed to make it appear that it had not been opened. Each pack contained about a gram of shabu.

Ecleo, "supreme master" of the Philippine Benevolent Missionaries Association (PBMA), vehemently denied that the packs were his.

"Planted siguro iyon kay wala man gani ko hahibawo anang sabuna. Wala man ko mogamit ana nga sabon (The packs were apparently planted because I did not know anything about that soap. I don't use that brand of soap)," he told reporters in his cell.

His lawyer, Orlando Salatandre, said Ecleo was not the one who carried his bags when he left Camp Crame for Cebu. He added that he was not even sure if Ecleo was the one who packed his personal belongings.

Police, he added, should first trace the identity of the person who put his client's belongings in the suitcase.

Dear President,

I have written to you a number of times in relation to Ms Cristina Casana and her family in Cebu. Her father, Reynaldo Casana has finally been arrested and is now facing trial at the Sandiganbayan whilst her brothers were formerly charged with Frustrated Homocide and are awaiting trial at the RTC in Cebu.

Attached you will find an updated letter sent to many Manning Agencies and the POEA in relation to Ms Casana and her activities. As you may be aware, I was engaged to Cristina for two years thinking that she was a divorced woman although she was legally married to a famous Negros Slasher basketball player Maui Huelar at the time. She is now in the arms of a married man from Caluag.

In March I faced eviction notices from the Casana's out of my own home, found all my bank accounts emptied, furnitures gone, fittings taken and a brand new toyota carolla (registered in their name but paid for by me) gone.

Ms Casana is returning to the Philippines on 20 October and I have made the DOJ, Passport Office and other authorities know that she has a Filipino passport in the name of Casana but her married name at the time was Huelar. She has misrepresented herself when applying for that passport and in many other ways since obtaining her passport.

Madam President I hope that Justice catches up with Ms Casana and her family.

Dear Sir/Madam,

Please find attached documents in relation to Ms Cristina Lim Casana (29 May, 1974) currently onboard the Disney Wonder.

I have forwarded a number of complaints to various Governmental Departments including the Department of Justice, Sandiganbayan, RTC Cebu City, Passport Office, Foreign Affairs, Department of Immigration USA, Department of Immigration Philippines, various shipping agencies, the POEA, the Honorable President of the Philippines and many, many more parties within the Philippines and abroad.

Ms Cristina Casana entered into a relationship with me whilst a legally married woman and we were engaged to be married. Over the two years I acquired property including motor vehicles, furnitures, fittings, appliances and a new townhome in Banawa, Cebu. I was informed by her family that foreigners were unable to own property in Philippines and as a result put everything, including bank accounts in the name of Virginia and Rey Casana (parents).

A number of things happened and my suspicions grew. In March of this year I found that if I transferred the property into Cristina’s name the house would become conjugal property.

More investigations into the family revealed that Cristina was married to Maui Huelar a famous basketballer for Negros Slashers and that she has misrepresented herself at the Passport Office in 1999. When applying for her Philippine passport she stated that she was a single woman and neglected to attach a copy of her marriage certificate to her application.

Further inquiries revealed that Cristina signed contracts with the POEA and CF Sharp to work abroad on the Fair Princess ship. At home her father Reynaldo Casana was on the run from the Sandiganbayan – relating to charges of misappropriation in 1990 and 1996. He had eluded arrest for ten years and lived off the earnings of Ms Casana. Cristina Casana knowingly aided and abetted Rey Casana whilst he was on the run from the law.

Please see attached documents showing the charges he is facing before the Sandiganbayan following his arrest on information given to authorities by myself. You will notice an email from the Sandiganbayan outlining the sentence of 17 years and one day for the co-accused Bernadino Alcaria. Ms Casana’s education, her upbringing, her adolescent life and her entire past was paid for by funds stolen from the Municipality of Cagdiano in Surigao.

Cristina’s twin brothers were also found to have alias warrants in effect for frustrated homicide. The authorities were given Cristina’s home address and the twins were arrested and now face trial in October at the RTC in Cebu.

Virginia Casana – Cristina’s mother is now under investigation following the withdrawal of monies from various bank accounts at China Bank. The amortization checks for my townhome all bounced for three months and now charges are about to be laid against her.

Please note that Cristina’s father, mother and twin brothers remain living at her home – Ong’s Apartments, Lemon Street, Rama Compound Basak Mambaling Cebu – and you can call them on 0917 3744027.

You will also notice in previous complaints made to your company and Government agencies that Ms Casana has been involved in another relationship onboard the Disney Wonder with a Dining Server by the name of Jonas Leonor – PNR Site Brgy 5 Caluag Quezon. Mr Leonor impregnated Ms Casana who subsequently had an abortion. It can also be noted that Mr Leonor is a married man with three children.

But this story is not uncommon to Ms Casana – she has also had affairs and taken money from other seamen – including an Indonesian Server on the Fair Princess by the name of Frank and a Seaman working for Crystal Shipping – Captain Renie who was sending money to the Casana’s (Cristina’s father and mother) whilst at sea with me in Australia. Other seaman have leant Ms Casana money onboard other vessels – amounts of up to $1000 and these funds are partly paid or not paid back at all.

Once again – I strongly urge you not to employ Ms Casana until she has given you a firm undertaking that all matters against her and her family have been fully investigated and promulgated by the various courts.

Ms Casana currently has two children in the custody of her father, mother and twin brothers. Her POEA and Dolphin contract is currently funding fugitives from the law. Three of which are now facing the courts for various charges. Ms Casana has knowingly financed their time on the run, moving from home to home, island to island in an attempt to hide from the law, showing contempt for truth and Justice in the Philippines.

Ms Casana returns to the Philippines on 20 October to face questions not only from the law, but from a married woman in Caluag by the name of Althea Lenor, questions from her own family including her elderly Grandmother, questions from her current employers, but more importantly questions from her 6 year and 3 year old sons.

So again in brief: 1) Send 3US$ to position #1 with the IMPORTANT note, " Please add me to your mailing list and inform me of future business opportunities" 2) Copy ALL this letter, remove the person from the top of the list and move everybody up one space. 3) Add your details at position #5 and save it. 4) Send the altered letter, in the form of an email, to as many people/message boards/chat rooms as you can. ***Why and how does this work?*** Let's say you have reached 100 people with this system containing your details placed at position #5. Let us then assume that just 10% (it will be much higher if you contact friends/relatives) take action. That will mean that 10 people will send position #1 a total of 30US$ (10 x 3US$). That person will now be removed from the list and will receive no further money. You can now see why it is foolish to place yourself at the top of the list initially. What happens is that you will now take position #4 on each of the 10 new participants letters, who in turn reach 100 people getting a 10% response. It now means that the name at position #1, previously #2 will receive 300US$ (100 x 3US$). Once this has been duplicated 5 times you will be at the #1 position and would receive 300000 US$ (100000 x 3US$). After this your name will no longer be on any list circulating and hence you would receive no more money. However, I would have hoped you would be happy with your initial 3US$ outlay and a few hours work. Naturally if the people and/or percentage increases then you would have more potential earnings. The figures can become quite astronomical. ***Why is this letter so different to others?*** If you have ever seen other systems then you would have noticed how they all claim that you will make X amount of dollars and describe how much money they have made already. Well besides being totally illegal (see below) you also know that this cannot be genuine. How can the program have started circulating with someone in position #5 already making money – this is not possible. ***Why is this letter much easier to use and more effective?*** A considerable amount of time and effort has been spent in setting up this particular program to make it easy and simple for you to understand and use. It is extremely duplicable, with regard to copying and pasting, requiring you only to alter the positions of the current members. There is nothing else you need to do. DO NOT alter anything else in this letter. Unlike other, less effective, programs there is no drivel about how poor you where before you discovered this program, or how you now have a house worth 2 million US$, or false testimonials from allegedly previous participants (which again cannot appear on such a letter if it was genuine, as mentioned above). Nowhere has this letter been personalised with such comments. If it had then the majority of this letter would need to be amended before you begin to send your e-mails, and thus the recipients of your e-mails would also have to make the necessary changes. ***The Legality of this system*** This is completely legal if you follow the instructions and alter ONLY the list of members as instructed and none of the wording. At no time in this program are there any promises or guarantees. Why people think this is illegal is simple. Many people regard this as a chain letter and as such have reserved feelings. Chain letters have been around for many decades now and naturally all the early ones used the postal system. Chain letters would be delivered to your house requesting/demanding that you sent everybody on the list a small amount (sometimes a large amount) of money and then add your name and send the letter onto other people.
