Neurolinguistic programming NLP

I think this is the wrong spot to ask this question, but I was wondering how vlaid neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) is?

I visited a site (www.accelerated-excellence.com) after finding it mentioned on this message board. The site is selling a book called "80/20", seemingly another self help book (scam?/cult?). The author claims to be trained in NLP. Reading into it furthur, I found that Tony Robbins is also trained in NLP. Another source (www.skipdic.com) claims that NLP is largely based on the idea of Noam Chomsky.

Is there truth to this? How valid (or respected) is this (pseudo)science? Can someone sum up what NLP is in a couple paragraphs?

Neuro = Mind
Linguistic = Language
Programing = what's gone unconscious

NLP is the unconscious language of the mind that controls us. These are the decisions we've made after any experience. This can be pre birth, in the womb, during early childhood or any other experiential time.

NLP is a tool to find out what decision you've made or contract you've made during any experience. These decisions are controling your life and you are not aware of them (unconscious) until they are brought from the mind to the brain sphere (conscious). Using NLP as a tool, you discover the decision/contract, you can decide if it is supporting you in the here and now. If it's not you recreate it.

There are many people who have mastered NLP to use as a tool for their own life and many who provide services to others. Some are very gifted in their service. Sylvia Kessler in Omaha Nebraska is a gifted practioner who could tell you more about NLP. Janice

I would like for you to know that this company works with trance induction to programm there students to further be more succsessfull in live . None of them have or posess a psyciologial degree or a counsler certificate.I took a cours there about 8 years ago and saw the trainer on private appointments ,not knowing that these people where programing my mind in a certain way (called layer programming ).What i found out ist that these appointments where part of a programm she carefully installed over years .
in the last apointments i had i was told that cum was a very powerfull word and that my eyes trurn to satan ..........................................
The lady claims that she uses these techniks to trigger past memeories and and child hood memories.As i had to find out shortly after i found my self in psyciatric care in wichita K.S and i started to burn myself with cigaretts on my arms finger ,neck and genitals .If you wish i can send you pictures of the burns now healed.
After doing my owen reserch and investigating i found out that trainer installs these programms under a very high state of trance wich can then be trigger to her wishes .
So i have the word cume flying arround in my thoughts nicely with moaning and growing to her sound . After reading further these technic is used by people and classified under ritual abuse . These folks also used sleep deprevation witch is used to wash peoples brain the longest i was up was 128 hours .
I know it is very hard to proof what the lady said and there are no witnesses but please investigate this matter ,there maybe more people seeking help and are afraid to come forward .

There was a neuro linguistics course offered in my area a few years back. I signed up but it was cancelled due to lack of interest.Are you saying it is one company that does it?

I believe that it is seperate orgaizations that offer this. But I'm not really too sure.

I am currently studying NLP it so far has been helpful. Let me give you an example(honestly some NLP is scamming but some is valid) Anchoring is my favorite NLP 'tool'. Have you ever heard a song that reminded you of a memory? or a smell of a perfume of a old Girlfriend? and it brought back the emotions of the moment? the smell and the song are 'anchored' or associated in your brain. You can learn to associate any emotion with a touch, word or visual image, you can recall confidence by thinking of James Bond, or by touching behind your knee, or saying the word "Power" to yourself. Try your local library for a book called "Success Mastery through NLP". Some of it is useful some of it is not. It could be used wrongly, but it has some uses.

There is an interesting analysis of NLP on the skeptics dictionary site that I think Factnet links too. The out of print, Frogs into Princes book by Bandler and Grindler is the best NLP intro, check your local library, Tony Robbins uses NLP as part of his success tape thing but the actual NLP stuff is more interesting. There are tons of people doing it and apparantly Bandler is suing them over the name.

I always thought that Tony Robbins was goofy until I read this passage. NLP is used by licensed and certified hypnotists. It can be used for good and it can be used for evil.

It has been used by many cult personalities for amazement in attracting a following. People who go from one movement to another can recognize the similarities again and they never know that it has been identified as NLP. Legitimate hypnotists practice the ethics of only helping you with what you ask for; eating, smoking, sleep disorders, assertiveness, etc. They do not put you to sleep and take over you body like the invasion of the body-snatchers, but get you to relax as they give you assurance that you can take control and overcome bad habits, etc.

Volition is a part of faith and belief. It is better to be motiviated by a Christian conscience in being delivered from any sin that we are trying to eliminate in our lives; even when our sins are already forgiven by the work of Christ.

The techniques have some similarity.
