Reading all of Maranatha1984's blog reminded me of the original Praise Band, the Rothwells (it *was* Randy Rothwell, right?) and that led me to recall I still have their first two LPs. I'm at work now, but I think when I get home I'm going to pull them out.
Honestly, I never was all that impressed with them. However, I will say Maranatha introduced me to John Michael Talbot when they brought him to the Athens campus in the fall of '77 or spring of '78 (can't really remember). They also brought "Hope of Glory" to town for a couple shows.
Anyway, that got me started listening to "CCM" for the next 10 to 15 years or so. I remember having a fairly spirited discussion with mdillon in the M'Boro bookstore over whether one of the bands whose records we carried were "Christian". Can't remember who it was. I want to say Resurrection Band, but I don't think their first LP came out until I was in Lexington (gotta admit I loved that bad - I especially loved that Bob Martin hated "rock music" - strange things you remember after 30 years - but wouldn't keep me from stocking stuff like that because it drew the kids in).
Anyone still got LPS (or even cassettes) from Praise or it's little siblings?

mdillon: jon, dude, your memory is scaring me. i'm sending in the black helicopters for those journals.
Me: Actually I *really* only wrote in my journal sporadically. Nothing about the day to day stuff. Almost *always* it was related to some love interest. I *seriously* wanted to get married at that time. I think it's God's joke on me that I didn't get married until I was 28. It's like, see, you want something that bad I'll teach you to live without it. Ouch!
My wife will tell you my memory ain't that good. ;-D But reading posts here keeps triggering little things and dredging up these old memories.

Resurerction Band's "Broken Promises"
Broken Promises, we lost the joy that we once knew;
Where do we go from here,
from something old to something new?
Past dreams done gone from me,
I'm losing daylight, losing view.
Son of God, where are You now?
Do You feel my need?
I'm lost within this forest,
Barricaded by the trees.
Will You hear my cry for help,
Would you forgive me?
I'm so far away,
I've run so far away.
*********************
Point? I'm not sure, but as I listened to it, these stanzas at anyrate seemed somewhat poignant and relevant to what many of us feel/felt at the realizing of what MCM and the like did to us. Just thought I'd share.

Sameo: in fairness to my friends(haha) in the "early" Praise band, keep in mind that most of them were "drafted into service" and didn't necessarily consider themselves professional musicians. ;-) Although some of them clearly had what it took. I actually still have my LP of them too! somewhere...

Re: Praise Band, I look at it in a time perspective. Can't compare it to today, but in 1978 in Auburn AL, it was like nothing we had ever seen or heard. Me and the Alliecat and one other person with a guitar had led worship in a small church--no microphones--- before we came to Auburn. Guitar/choruses were radical at the time. This group just blew us away.

I was probably too harsh in what I wrote about Praise Band above. They weren't bad. I liked Randy and his wife (Susan?), and got fairly well acquainted with them at one point. Yeah, I seem to remember some of them didn't really want to be doing what they were doing, but I could be misrembering again.
As for "radical", well your *are* talking about Auburn now, aren't you? I mean, that little tow "on the plains" has never been noted for its sophistication!! (Sorry, gotta get my UGA digs in where I can!!)
But speaking about music, I remember while we were still trying to keep the ministry at M'Boro on kickin', we had Terry Talbot come. We also had Mike Deasy (who was a pretty killer guitar player, but I can't remember off the top of my head who he had played with). I can't remember if it was Terry or Mike who trashed the whole shephership movement. It's pretty funny looking back on it, but Dillon was *cheesed* (well, okay, I had my holy, righteous indignation going, too. I mean, how dare he attack "the body"?). Good times, man, good times (he says with a wistful grin, wishing he had paid more attention to some of those voices God sent his way a bit sooner).

Me: If they were bio-diesel you could maybe run 'em off the left-over "annointing oil" from M'Boro. I don't think we ate *that much* popcorn. (Though Miltie's probably pretty well fueled, he could probably get to Atlanta in short order!!)

I'm probably dropping in the middle of a discussion...
Blown away! You all have no idea... I was from a little Church of Christ, non-denominational (and they really met it) that sang acappella, we didn't even have a choir (that would've been "radical", bringing a "record player" into the building to play the "Wedding March" took several prayerful business meetings (note term "business" since they didn't consider it a "Church" matter. So, "Blown away"...any of you ol'boys ever been on a military base in the middle of beautiful dark, quiet night, driving peacefully along, pull over to enjoy the stars... then suddenly have a hellfire missle blast from nowhere across your head...black Helicopters apparently can be wwery wwery quiet... My husband thought my reaction funny...) First exposure to Praise Band...same thing...Grabbing my knees & coming to Jesus moment both times!!!
AND MSTAFF78...YOU WERE RIGHT...I bought those LPS...tapes...whatever you had in stock...does seem like I stopped going in there by the Spring of 1980.. I left my "group" winter '79 but since I didn't leave Jesus I wonder if the store changed their stock... even Church of Christ people in Lexington (Southside...some of the others, well...unfriendly comes to mind) liked the Praise music. For their services they'd take the songs. Drop the instruments & do a three part harmony...I visited sometimes.

Me: Well, when I was ordering the stock I got whatever was cutting edge (for '79, Resurrection Band was pretty much cutting edge - but there was a lot of other stuff as well). I actually built up a fairly decent collecting while I was there. I would run a sale every other week or so. Since bookstores paid 40% off MSRP, I'd take 20% or even 25% off and we'd still make some money since the overhead was covered by the ministry and the bookstore was pretty much just to get folks in the door.
Anyway, don't know what they did when I left. Never heard, never asked. In fact, I never heard from *anyone* in Lexington again. I think Kay Myatt was there when I was (at least her testimony jives with that), but I can't place her from her pictures on the web. Don't know what happened to Bob Martin, can't remember anyone else's names. Probably a good thing.

hehe, come over this year and watch "tiger" fly from the upper deck and hit the AU emblem on the 50 yard line, as we all yell WAAAARRRRR EAGLE.! It is a sight to behold, really. Funny thing, though, with really big games like AU-GA, they won't let the eagle fly because of the overhead camera cable that runs across the stadium, so we'll see. SEC football, it is all good, eh?

You know I remember I was in MCM, There were prebytry. Prosphesying to everybody, there is a friend that these 3 americans MCM did that on the microphone, I was so uncomfortable by what they did to this woman, saying about she was sleeping with when she was younger and talking about lust for everybody to hear.
I went up and complained to the pastor, thats embarassing and its wrong. The next one, they stop the microphone, they did it privately .

the last time I heard about Bob Martin was that he was an asst pastor at Lone Oak Baptist church outside Paducah. I saw him when my mother passed away he was doing his hospital rounds and came to pray with us. He seemed to be doing well.
I am back from my Florida trip. Looking where I can get on the bus. We celebrated my wife's fathers 80th birthday. Some of our kids came to visit and we had a good time.
My father-in-law had a prepared speech(typicalof a man who spent much of his life on radio and TV) to deliver. In the speech he said that in his years if a person tells them you can trust them they are probably lying and that you should stay clear. This is the way I feel about most of the folks in EN. Although I was never in EN I am sure that with all the champ lingo and flattering speech that they are not to be trusted. I am proud to say that in my years of ministry I never referred to someone as champ.
I have a revised version of who cannot be trusted.
1. Anyone under the age of 45
2. Anyone who calls me champ.
3. Anyone who calls me brother(if you don't even know my name why am I trusting you)
4. Anyone by the name of Bob Weiner
5. Anyone who has a christian TV program.
6. Anyone who has all the answers
7. Anyone who says God told them more than 3 times in their life.
8. Anyone who sees the condition of the church and thinks its ok
9. Anyone who does not ride in the back of the bus(only kidding, but maybe not)
10. Anyone who does not have the scars from doing all the things above.
Do we learn from making bad choices? Sometimes. And we are all the wiser. Sometimes not and we are even more foolish than when we were younger.
I will try to catch up to the bus but you got to tell me where you are headed. I hope somewhere where the air is thin and clean, not to some stale stifling hot sweatbox. The bus does have air conditioning? I will need to upgrade to business class. I have a card from Phil B. travel.

Sameo, I remember when the 2nd LP came out but for whatever reason didn't buy it (at least I don't still have it and I don't recall buying it). Maybe because I think I had a few tapes of them "live" and thought it was redundant. Who can remember?
Yes, I knew they changed personnel. In fact, I think only the Rothwells were left from the original band (and they weren't married when the first LP was put out). I think it was '77 when they changed lineups.
Flo, I like your list. Gotta admit all these things send up warning flags in my mind as well. I'll add another big one: anyone who says "I've got a word for you" and its like "Thus saith the Lord God..."

Well, I feel like a rock star...typing this with my big sunglasses on....thinking this might cut down on the dark circles and red glazed eyes from being on this computer so much.(u guys should try it-cuts the glare) <sigh> I keep thinking if those super models who've done cocaine can still look good despite it...then maybe I can get over my dark puffy circles. But then again, I'm nearing 50. OK--music...that's right...well, this is kind of music related, right?
Lalalala.....to get back on topic!

Well, used to be a rock star, country brought her home. Looks like the girls in the Praise Band.

One more comment...What kind of screeching would have come from that lavaler mic had the girls showed up with a nose piercing and tatoos? Come to think of it, had we embraced more of that, we might be ruling and reigning. Those pesky words in red about the first and last. They just don't make any sense to some folks, but the veil is lifting for this old dog.
