Since Charlie Brown and I share the same hairdresser I've decided in hizonor to have a pumpkin watch this year complete with howling beagle.

What may be of equal fun is driving some people mad who're trying to find the double entendres in the pumpkin patch if there are any.

Good Grief!

Man, I'm going to be a total disappointment. As stated in an earlier post, I don't really do holidays. I know...you'd think a grandmother of five could do better.

I don't have pumpkin, a bale of hay, or a stuffed corpse anywhere on my property. I hate mums; they stink. On Halloween, my husband and I turn the lights off in the house and hide from trick or treaters, including the grandkids. I buy candy, but I eat it.

I do have a bat. A real live bat. But if he's looking for treats, he's outta luck, too.

We do the same except we put bear traps on the lawn.

In Sunday school today I saw a very hurt and wounded individual come to a place of healing. Somewhere is this couple's past someone in leadership had crushed them and the devastation that caused has colored their existence to this day. So as I talked and along with others in the room we were able to speak to his objections related to how I'd detailed something about scripture and to speak to healing. I think there is a duality to healing in life and some of it requires understanding, understanding for all.

I'll share a story, I played little league football and it was interesting to say the least. It seemed to me to be a bunch of angry men who were amateur coaches and living vicariously their failed athletic attempts in life through us. I think a parallel could be found in MCM, EN. I digress. So we're practicing one fall day toward the end of the season and during a play my knee gets folded backwards, hyperextension as they term it now. Anyway no help nothing I crawled off the field and sat on the side and drank some water. A coach came over and yelled at me for drinking water and kicked at me. I just looked at him, finally when I could I crawled over to my bike got on it and rode with one foot pedaling home. I was taken to the Dr's. Office and the pediatrician felt around and said I had some water on my knee and I should be ok, no x-rays, no Orthopod, and no dad, he was busy. So in a few days back to practice but I can't make the go to get off the line my knee is still wonky. One of the men coaching takes me aside and in a "Fatherly" way tells me to quit faking it. I walked over to my bike got on it and rode home packed-up the pads and we dropped them off at the coach’s house in a few days.

Band: I stood on another field in the same complex a few years later and watched as the new band director stood there in a whimsical fashion and told how it would be. We nicknamed him RD. Our marching band had had a reputation and it had slid some because a couple of band directors had not really worked out, kids don't play "Air For Band", they play Susa marches and if you can get them to throttle back on the volume in the first go round of "Stars and Stripes Forever" good luck, but when that works it's awesome. RD knew people, not just kids but their parents. Our band wasn't wimpy some of us scrimmaged one afternoon with some of the Football team and caught hell from the coach for hurting them. Some of the guys in the trombone section where I played were farm boys. The Olson twins in the tuba section could've started for the Bears on the left side of the line. Anyway it was clear that though RD was a tough disciplinarian he cared about us. Because of that one fine summer day in Canada we stood on a parade ground and heard our band named "Grand Champions of North America" we'd literally competed against bands from all over the continent and beat them all.

When I was back in Paducah about fifteen years ago I was invited to play in a community band that had some of the old band members in it, some other adults and even some high school band directors who played. Some of these fellows had band practice in another town, as far away as Mayfield and Southern Illinois and after their school practices came and played in our rehearsals. Our director a high school director himself had to sometimes tap the podium with his baton to get us to shut up, but the music was awesome. I was lost in the music for some of the time it had been years since I'd played a horn. From that group we created a Polka band for October, a Jazz band that played Dixie Land, and another group that after playing polka started doing Fats Waller stuff and other music from a century ago. Our Veterans Day concert was a combination of marches, military music and big band music. Some of the big band music required the soloists to stand up; our trumpeters some of whom were pros gave you chills. The "Bones" got to stand-up and do our thang as well. I'm a halfassed Trombonist on a good day but into my adulthood I still make music.

Making the music of life means we work together. One of the nice things about music is that it can be made by people of varying skill levels. The skill levels of various players can be elevated by playing with better musicians, conversely the better musicians don't suffer any ill effects from playing with others not up to their par. I sat next to a high school player in this hodge-podge who had two dynamic ranges-loud and louder. As we were rehearsing Doug the director would look over at me and raise an eyebrow in a "What's up in the trombone section?" look. Section leaders in a band or orchestra are to police their members in rehearsals so we undertook that. On the end of the trombone row sat a High School classmate now a PHD and college professor of low brass, who could get plumbing fixtures to play an overture, just glanced in the kid's direction and since he'd given him some notice the kid started playing better.

Moral of this rambling morass of my life; in sports you can't always play hurt, though if you do, sometimes it's required, it takes teamwork to do so and understanding. In music all different abilities are required to make music in an ensemble, along with skill levels. A virtuoso playing third chair music will get bored and soon be adding notes to the page-which will guarantee a glare from the conductor who has the score on the podium. But a third chair player has their hands full playing that same music so let them. All I know was at the end of our last concert the audience jumped to their feet and the applause roared in our ears and a thirty-minute encore ensued for those vets.

"Humor which does not say anything is worthless humor. So I contend that a cartoonist must be given a chance to do his own preaching" Charles Schultz

Looks like the same comments certainly apply to a "half-mule" Trombonist who still makes music &amp; gives us the blessing of preaching a bit at the same time. http://www.factnet.org/discus/clipart/biggrin.gif Now follow my example and go back to sleep.... If I dream about 76 Trombons marching up to my door...I'm not going to just ignore them...I'm going to get up &amp; send them off to YOU! God Bless.

Ya know, JRJ, speaking of cuckoo, I knew a guy at Auburn, one of the few that was a fellow believer who was not MCM. He was a nut. Irreverent, funny, stories about growing up in the deep south town of Brewton, AL. He was the guy who all would congregate around and had that "tell us a story" personna that reeked the love of Christ. Sometimes his stories were even a bit bawdy.I would gulp and ask God to forgive him, as he wasn't a point of the sword believer like me.

He and I are still friends. He and wife raised two wonderful kids who have given them 4 grandchildren. His daughter is married to an Ex Auburn Football player who is now a Southern Baptist minister.

We chat occasionally, and it is mindless banter for a while, and it then turns deeply spiritual, as he shares the same surgeon as me. 10 years my senior, I listen with great intensity, as he also has about 10 years on me post surgery.

It is his sense of humor that has kept him, I am convinced of that. It is the thing, going all the way back to my days as a naive young MCM pastor that impressed me about him, even in my self righteousness that made me want to question: "Where am I missing it God? Why am I not happy like this nut? What does he understand about You that I don't?"

Over the years the answer comes with Prov. 17:22, the scripture that I post at the end of every blog. Humor has saved me too, I am convinced. Like my friend, too bawdy at times, for that I beg forgiveness, but to turn out like him, I'll risk it.

hey, matt: no meds that would help. I got a couple of Midol http://www.factnet.org/discus/clipart/happy.gif

I had a semi-revelation (don't you hate that word. Thought I'd get your attention).

I was reading through the posts on one of the holier threads, I did realize that most of these people aren't far from their EN experience. Never really thought about that before. It does explain why some exhibit behavior that reminds me of MCM leadership mentality - they are still operating from the mindset. WE, on the other hand, have blown much of that away. It's gonna be hard to reconcile that divide for a while. Just my humble opinion.

That being said, I can't abide a lot of the "religious" yuck. I'll be more than happy to be a bunny.

Mr Dillon have you gone back to class yet or are you still loafing around the house??? If you are still standing on your head, I can see this may impede your ability to answer!

MatHattr...Crown &amp; Coke??? Or does Miss Kitty just carry the house brand? And have you created any new fashion accessories out of Armadillos recently?

Hey LabLady...I'm just ignoring the divide, if I thought there was one...then where would I be??? I am continually tripping over things...falling. So, I know I'd forget it was there &amp; just step right into it... And I do not want to be in whatever "it" is because if it's an "it" then "it" isn't anything good--and it always has something to do with cows...ick. I've said elsewhere and I guess here too is OK...although not funny bunny enough perhaps.... http://www.factnet.org/discus/clipart/crazy.gif I care very much for all the hearts on this board and have a deep respect &amp; affection for all who I've been blessed to come to know here. Most likely, she carries that harsh stuff from the state she resides. Good things from Canada: Crown and fishing trips.

Wildy I am back with the little shavers, thanks for asking. The doubledips are the clue--posting from the state's T1 line.

Wildy I have read all your posts this morning and was going to respond to you elsewhere but alas here you are. I don't have the time to respond in depth but I appreciate your heart and willingness to 'walk the walls'. It is the nature of Man to freak out whenever things get 'messy' and seek to control in order not to lose whatever he thinks he has, so divisions must be made---"you go here and you go there". God has been watching Man do this since the beginning and He sits in the heavens and laughs. It is the nature of the Kingdom to multiply and it does so with very little effort from Man other than to nurture and water that which is precious. Ahhh, but then people start fighting over what they think is 'precious' don't they. That which is precious to me now was not precious to me way back then. And I will give you a couple of examples. 1. one of the reasons that I am friends with miltie and his family is because I gave up an offer to have a 'title' and paid position as a pastor of the church we both participated in years ago ('scuse the lack of details) 2. Lablady is Jewish. I am Christian (though some question hehehe) We have be reunited after 25 some odd years. I would trade any membership in any of the finest steeplehouses in America just to remain her friend (not that she would require this).

gotta go, sorry if this was sketchy, couldn't finish...the bell's about to ring and I hear a saw running.........

"That which is precious to me now was not precious to me way back then."

Interesting that you would say this dilly, as I continue my thought from my previous post. My dear friend, who called out of the blue last night, talked with Allie for several minutes and then he and I picked up where we left off---8 months ago. The laughter, love, and memories.

In 1982, M&amp;M pulling out of Maranatha was a seismic event and at the epicenter of our world. Now, it is a distant memory. Remembering back, I can now understand why there are things that are critcal and important to some folks in here that don't really affect me. My lack of rememberance will have to be excused, even forgiven, as I don't live in that place anymore. I am NOT discounting that place, I just simply don't live there.

I do, however live in a place where a dear old friend called and reminded me of how Allie and I used to drive to Auburn and watch his son (now in his 30's with 2 kids)play high school football. (I had forgotten)It was time for my friend and his family to come and watch my boy play. This is my real life now.

For those who have recently left EN, and those contemplating leaving, this is all I have to offer, Jesus came to give us life, abundant life, and I am enjoying it as much as I can. I can only tell you that many years down the road, the simple devotion to my faith has returned. I would hope that some of you can see that in my posts.

lablady2
10-17-2006, 02:20 PM
md and wild: For some, according to the posts, it's a matter of respect. I get that. For others (like me), it is, as md pointed out, about control. I have to admit, I've been difficult to control by others since my MCM days (ask my husband). That's quite different, however, than being obedient or submissive to God.

If I saw my behavior as "sin", I would change it. Sometimes I do cross the line, as with mr. krems, and I apologized and changed my ways. I also apologized to dust for messing up her thread and I stopped. However, some of those who are talking respect have often been disrespectful of my religion and I've not had an apology yet. I've had my fill of the "do as I say but not as I do" theology, thanks.

So, I'll be good and I'll stay off those threads and here on the bunny trail where the jesting may be coarse but people are real.

Dillon...about that saw... if someone says that a vision appeared before them that looked a whole lot like an incredibly cute 29 year old lady and she told them "go ahead" he won't mind if you start cutting things up without adult supervision...you look old enough to drive surely you've been qualified on that contraption there... (THAT was me! The 29 year old part...the incredibly bad advice to a student...nah, I had nothing to do with it).

Hearts forged together in the mixed fires of Faith &amp; Hell--are solidly &amp; soundly welded. Standing for a friend's heart that I miss deeply but still believe Truly...well, that's how I "stumbled" into this board... Looking for an old friend of my heart. I'm finding new ones but I'm never going to quit standing for the old one (wouldn't be the first time I had to wait on that particular old one). I am so thankful that you all have found your good "welds" still sound after so many years--but you knew they would be...you knew how they were made &amp; what they were made of...and the Master Craftsman who did the welding... http://www.factnet.org/discus/clipart/proud.gif

And I most thankful too for getting the chance to glimpses of all your hearts...I know Good Hearts when I meet them and you all... incorrigible rowdy group of folks...that possibly I did meet once on a visit to Murray...unless there was more than one old house church with a leaning chimney that would do open air preaching on campus &amp; host a weekend invasion from UK to support a new work of the Lord...ah, that had it's "UK sort of Leader" call a Group Fast because...well no one knew how to feed us but since everyone but him brought their own money...we were planning on doing that ourselves...Still a good fast to the Lord and not "unto" our clueless Leader type...was a Blessing as I recall...anyway... circa '77 or '78... Who knows... Small World... Possibly I've been stalking you all these years and I just didn't know it... I need theme music...and all I can think of at the moment is the music from Jaws...that can't be good...

Wild,

I enjoyed your post especially about the incredibly cute 29 year old.http://www.factnet.org/discus/clipart/lol.gif. The rest of your post was right on about friendships. I remember when I left Maranatha(which was decentralized at the time). I still basically lost most of my friends. That is one thing I have truly missed in the past years. True, I have new ones but not the same. I remember my wife telling me you will just have to make new friends, I said, I don't want new friends I want my old friends. This has been good because it has helped me reconnect to some of those old friends.

And about the saw. I hired a friend of one of my sons for a few days to help with a big job. He had construction experience but had never used this special saw that I have. He wanted to use it but was using it incorrectly, I told him to stop and let someone else do it because he was holding it wrong. He knew all the answers however and was sulled up because I thought he was a child(35 years old). He later rented this same type saw for a job he was doing on his own. The saw kicked back and he had to get 37 stiches in his upper thigh(true story). I am sure I could teach a cute 29 year old how to operate this saw easier than a burly 35 year old knowitall man.

Flo, 29 was a good year...and year and year and year and year...etc... http://www.factnet.org/discus/clipart/happy.gif

By 29 I was finally able to avoid the clever traps my Dad would set about teaching us how to use saws, drills, and such devices... It always ended up the same, we would be holding something sharp with splinters or nails or oily or whatever...while Dad did the fun stuff... Amazing, we were never killed...he used a truck hoist &amp; my brother &amp; my sister &amp; me...each Spring &amp; Fall for a few years to move the old-time (must have been 2 tons...ok just 1 ton) A/C Unit up &amp; out of the outdoor cellar... No, that has nothing to do with him teaching, but it does explain perhaps why I've been a bit rebellious &amp; questioned men's authority at times... Now a burly 35 year old knowitall man would probably think...hey, maybe I'll get to operate the hoist... Silly, Silly, the Biggest Fella was always at the bottom of the steps so the A/C Unit wouldn't be hurt if the hoist slipped....thus I did learn Brothers were sometimes necessary to keep around...

Dovie, if the bus has an automatic transmission (doubtful given the age of the other drivers but...) I'd be delighted to hop behind the wheel &amp; take it out... How the passengers &amp; other drivers on the roads might feel once I'd gotten a little speed up &amp; headed down the road...well, that's another issue, but probably one that would have us all doing much praying...

It is nice having options...but having been and still in the process of being a twin...I know that at some point I'd be arguing with myself over a missing eyelash curler from 1975... Although, when we did manage to sing together...we would do a nice harmony with "Jesus is Lord, My Redeemer, How He Loves Me, How I love Him, His is Risen, His is Coming, Lord Come Quickly...Hallelujah..." and I still remember one evening on the front lawn of a little Chapel on Campus that my sister &amp; I sang with our hearts in one accord (a rare event at the time since in addition to the natural conflict of just being related...we were also in dynamically opposed Church Views regarding the Holy Spirit...still one night with a few friends we did worship together...and the Spirit Blessed Us All.)<blockquote><hr size=0><!-quote-!><font size=1>quote:</font>

Oh, wildy-I thought we were still on the double-dutch bus song! hehehe

Frankie Smith

Give me a HO if you've got your funky bus fare…HO

There's a double dutch bus comin' down the street
Movin pretty fast
So kinda shuffle your feet
Get on the bus and pay your fare
And tell the driver that you're
Goin' to a Double Dutch Affair
Fe Fi Fo Fum
Well I'll be darn here it comes
The Double Dutch Bus is on the street
You'd better get off the curb
Move your feet

Bus fare trans-pass
That's the way my money lasts
Ain't got no car to get around
When I go to work I've gotta go downtown
Now I've missed my train
That's a darn shame
When I'm running late no sleep's to blame
If you've gotta wife you know I'm right
Gotta special man well I can understand
Uptown, downtown everybody's getting down
Say uptown say downtown
Well I've missed my bus I know I'm late
I've gotta do something I knio0w I hate
I'm gonna walk to work fifteen blocks
I already got a hole in my socks
Go ahead and laugh that's okay
Cause what I really wanna say
I got bad feet my corns hurt
To top it off I'm lost for work
Let me tell you what I say
When I'm dealing with the funky sidewalk
Let me show you how to walk
When I gotta do my funky walk
Let me tell you what I say
When I'm dealing with the funky sidewalk
I say sssssssss-sugar

(Rep with children)

Bip, bomp, bam alakazam
But only when you're grooving
With the Double Dutch Man
Put on your skates don't forget your rope
Cause I know I'm gonna see you
At my Double Dutch Show
Rebecca, Lolita, Veshawn and Dawn
Everytime you do the Double Dutch you really turn it on '
Bilzarbra, Mitzery, Milzetty, Kilsan
Titzommy, Kitzerrance, Kilzommy that's my man
Come on get on my Double Dutch Bus
(The Double Dutch Bus)

Let me hear you say do that

Let me hear you say Do that again
(Do that again)
Let me hear you say do the do
Let me hear you say do the do the do

I am no J2 but you ytrerjwlkrjwljrwklrjwrkj

then take the cursor to the beginning of where you want bold and click and then click the B and this appears so the missing O close is another you can either go an put the cursor where you want the bold to end, click then click the B and a } appears and closes your arguement... We need J2 for this...

hmmmm, simple way type \ b { only no spaces between them. Then type whater you what and close the deal with a bracket }

see if you type \ b { with no spaces then type bold stuff then add last bracket. Oh I remember J2 used the [ as the symbol from the bracket so you could see it \b[ bold words ] get it????? use { not [ in real one.

FACTnet provides a page about formatting here (http://www.factnet.org/factnetcgi/discus/discus.cgi?pg=formatting). You might find it helpful.

The answer to your specific problem is that you didn't write anything in between the brackets used to code bold type.

To explain this, I'm going to subsitute square brackets ][ for the cupid's bow brackets }{ so that you can see what I'm talking about. But, when you write your own formatting code you will need to use the curly brackets }{ not the square brackets ][.

The code to make something bold is...

<center>\b[this is the text I want to be bold]</center>

That ends up looking like this...

<center>this is the text I want to be bold</center>

Your problem, Dust, was that you didn't write anything inside the brackets (which is really more FACTnet's problem than yours--the coding on this site is a bit wonky).

You probably accidently wrote something like this...

<center>\b[]this is the text I want to be bold</center>

...which would give you the error message that you got. I hope that explains everything in a clear and understandable manner. http://www.factnet.org/discus/clipart/happy.gif

Well, the B button does work, but it takes some getting used to, and you have to look sharp at what you've written to make sure everything is where it ought to be.

You do colour basically the same way you make thing's bold. You might have noticed that to the right of the buttons for making this bold, italic, or underlined and adding smilies, there is a dropdown box for changing the colour. Select the colour you want and it will give you the code for that colour.

Again, I'm going to subsitute the curly brackets }{ with square brackets ][ so that you can see what I'm doing. But, when you do it be sure to use {} curly brackets.

The code for making something red is...

<center>\red[Yay! Redness!!!]</center>

That will look like this...

<center><font color="ff0000">Yay! Redness!!!</font></center>

Now, if you want to change the text colour and make it bold the code would look like this....

<center>\b[\red[Yay! Redness!!!]]</center>

Which would look like this...

<center><font color="ff0000">Yay! Redness!!!</font></center>

Make sense? Or do you have questions?}

Dust: J2 as an artist....are you a mac user<!-/quote-!><hr size=0></blockquote>
No, I use a PC. Early on, Macs were better for doing artsy/graphics related things, but that has long since ceased to be the case. PCs and Macs handle graphics about the same now, and it just depends on the user which computer is preferable.

I don't even use any particularly special programs for doing my art, either. I just used the cheap, smaller versions of expensive programs (Adobe Photoshop Elements instead of the full-fledged Adobe Photoshop). I've found that I've been able to do everything I want to do even without the expensive stuff.

Yeah, it is a lot of work, and I sometimes wonder why FACTnet has such a strangly un-user-friendly way of formatting text, but I assume they must have a reason, so I'm not complaining. And, once you get used to it, it's not that difficult.

So, an html command line goes something like this...

\ = I am about to tell you what do to

b = make text Bold
i = make text italic
u = underline text
-2 = make text 2 sizes smaller
+2 = make text 2 sizes larger
red = make text red

{ = start command after this bracket
} = stop command after this bracket

wiseasaserpentgentleasadove
10-20-2006, 08:51 PM
forward, yes. but, rather than actually typing the opening bracket and the \ yourself, all you have to do is hit the B for bold, type what you want bold, and then go hit the B again to go back to regular text. The same for all of the other options...underline, color (don't forget to put the window back to the WORD color afterwards.) ETC.

If you do this, the closing bracket automatically appears. If you don't go back up and click the B or I or U or return the window to COLOR or -FONT- or -SIZE, then you will have to add the } after the text that you want different.

whew. I don't know if that helped. you and Dust can have an HTML hay-day later...trying all of it out.
hehehe nothing better to do on a FRIDAY night!

p.s. go to the link that J2 gave above. It explains how to do the fancy quote thing....

it's easy. you just use \quote[ you type these in yourself] but instead of [] you actually use {} before and after your \quote[text to be quoted] will look like this:

<blockquote><hr size=0><!-quote-!><font size=1>quote:</font>

text to be quoted<!-/quote-!><hr size=0></blockquote> when you are all done.

Well, all I did was center the text. It just looks indented because the phrase was so short, but the longer the phrase the less indented in would have appeared to be.

However, there is a way to indent more than you were able to above....

\indent[This phrase is indented] looks like...
<blockquote>This phrase is indented</blockquote>
\indent[\indent[This phrase is indented even more]] looks like...
<blockquote><blockquote>This phrase is indented even more</blockquote></blockquote>
\indent[\indent[\indent[This phrase is indented even morer]]] looks like...
<blockquote><blockquote><blockquote>This phrase is indented even morer</blockquote></blockquote></blockquote>
