Just got this e-mail:
As a registered user of the FACTNet discussion board and/or user of
FACTNet’s free information services the FACTNet staff has the obligation
to inform you that the FACTNet discussion board may be permanently or
temporarily shut down within the next 2-3 weeks due to 2 seemingly
contradictory circumstances:
1.) The discussion board is growing at a fantastic rate. It has over
6,000 registered users and thousands more lurking and frequently gets
600 new posts a day. It is responsible for the greatest part of the 600
gigabytes plus of monthly data transfer at FACTNet. It consumes a
tremendous amount of paid staff time to keep it monitored and safe and
that amount of necessary staff time keeps growing each month well beyond
our budget and donations. That leads us to the second issue.
2.) We fell well behind our minimal operating donations for our budget
in 2005 and with the projected surging monthly growth of the FACTNet
discussion board for 2006 (requiring greater labor each month) we cannot
keep the board open without making some immediate and dramatic changes
at FACTNet. These changes may upset a small portion of our users. (Many
of you have donated to FACTNet to help fund our free services to all. We
deeply thank your for supporting our cult education and healing
services; the brunt of this email is not directed at you. It is mainly
directed towards those of you who have not yet donated, volunteered some
of your time or supported FACTNet in some other way. )
To try to keep a safe and well run open dialog discussion board up, at
least one or all of the following changes need to become successful
quickly:
Because of funding shortfalls, FACTNet has to evolve its operations
model to become more volunteer labor driven. This means we need to
immediately recruit a group of unpaid volunteers willing to put in at
least 2 hours a week to help the FACTNet permanent staff, most
particularly in the moderation of the discussion board areas.
In addition to the critical discussion board monitors (2-6 hours per
month for a particular section of the discussion board) we also need to
recruit the following volunteers to help FACTNet grow to its full
potential and become the Amnesty International of psychological torture
and human rights abuses:
* individuals to help us research broken link material, (2-5 hours a month)
* individuals with web master skills, (8-12 hours a month)
* a volunteer to work with building better alliances, co-education and
co-event promotions with the other cult education organizations around
the world, (4-8 hours per month)
* a chief news editor volunteer who will search for the best stories for
cult and mind control issues for our home page and quarterly newsletter,
(6-10 hours per month)
* a graphics person to assist with design on the web site and in the
quarterly newsletter, (6-10 hours per month)
* a volunteer with successful fund raising experience to help us get our
design and write donation appeals and get donations up, (4-8 hours a month)
* a volunteer co-coordinator who would assist in the selection, training
and support and honoring of all volunteering staff. They would also head
the FACTNet cyber volunteer operations advisory board in which the
volunteers would advise on needed operational policy changes and other
improvements needed at FACTNet to provide better information and
service, (4-6 hours a month)
:: To volunteer read the more complete job descriptions below and
quickly email us your information.
We need to install a pay- for- some-services system in the discussion
board area and possibly later in some other areas of FACTNet. This is a
first for FACTNet as we have never charged for anything in 13 years of
operation, but given the choice of closing down services or evolving to
deal with the reality of the times, we have decided to begin some type
of service charge in some areas of the discussion board. These new
service charges will have non charge options as shown at the end of this
notice.
And/or we need to get enough additional donations in the next 14 days to
cover costs of additional permanent staff to handle the discussion board
and other areas of the organization. That is currently about six
thousand dollars. And, that would only assist us through the next 2-3
months. This is why steps one and two above also need to be implemented
and working as well. Unless our donations at least double where they are
now and stay there consistently, we must continue to maintain and/or
exceed steps one and two above and evolve to a more volunteer driven and
service charge driven model. If you have decided that you are so
inclined and have decided to help us help others in a vital and
meaningful way and help us keep FACTNet serving those who need it most,
make an immediate donation by going to
https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_xclick&business=manage@factnet.org&cur rency_code=USD&tax=0
or
http://tinyurl.com/b6ctp
So, The future of the discussion board is as simple as this: if some
combination of 1,2 and 3 above do not start occurring successfully, we
absolutely will be forced within the next 14 days to start shutting down
the discussion board and then if necessary, eliminating any other
services until we can operate safely, securely and properly within our
donation budget. During the next 14 -21 days until we begin to get these
three new solutions in place little service will take place on the
discussion board.
I have complete confidence that all of us together will solve this
challenge using the options in 1, 2 and 3 above just as FACTNet and its
users have solved every single previous challenge with its supporters
over these many years. With your help and the changes above, this
current growth challenge is truly a great opportunity to evolve FACTNet
into something far more effective and user need driven and responsive.
I firmly believe that there are more than enough volunteers out there
who trustworthy, balanced, have good judgment and a sincere empathy and
understanding of cult victim recovery issues and who want to help
others. I firmly believe that there are more than enough human and
financial resources waiting to be directed to our worthwhile mission if
we just ask you to become a more active part of the FACTNet team.

and in the Payment For line, enter ’password problem’. Your payment will
be processed within 3 days and someone will contact you via email to
help resolve the issue.)
Personal abuse complaints on the board, $20.00 US begun within 3 days.
This requires checking out the actual text that people have posted. It
sometimes requires sending a return email to the person who lodges the
complaint asking for more details or asking them to quote the exact
offending text, and URL where the text occurs if they have not done that
in the original email. Next, using the criteria of our discussion board
rules, determine if there is a real board rules offence and if
necessary, delete the offending posts or, if necessary, warn the
offending poster or, if necessary, block the offending poster from ever
using the board again. This is a sometimes a difficult and time
consuming process when done fairly. If you do not want to pay the
service charge, you will need to wait until a volunteer can get to it.
If we have lots of volunteers and a small work load this should not take
too long. If we don’t, it could take weeks or even longer. There is no
time guarantee as to when a volunteer might get to this work. (To pay
this service charge go to
https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_xclick&business=manage@factnet.org&cur rency_code=USD&tax=0
or
http://tinyurl.com/b6ctp
and in the Payment For enter ‘Abuse Complaint’. Your payment will be
processed within 3 days and someone will contact you via email to help
resolve the issue.)
Can’t see the Discussion board or the FACTNet website, $10.00 US
investigated within 3 days. This is usually a URL blocking issue. If you
do not want to pay the service charge, you will need to wait until a
volunteer can get to it. If we have lots of volunteers and a small work
load this should not take too long. If we don’t it could take weeks or
even longer. There is no time guarantee as to when a volunteer might get
to this work. (To pay this service charge go to
https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_xclick&business=manage@factnet.org&cur rency_code=USD&tax=0
or

processed within 3 days and someone will contact you via email to help
resolve the issue.)

(To pay
