JB, You seem pretty good at following the hermeneutical principal of "scripture interprets scripture", but in my skimming of your commentary, I see no reference to the historical and cultural context of Jesus' words. Crucifixion was a form of capital punishment in those days. Could phrases referring to bearing or taking up one's cross have been common in those days with widely understood meanings. Maybe it was simply a way of saying that we should endure punishment or hardship that comes with our calling?
