View Full Version : Just an Honest Question

As a Christian I have a question to "born again" Christians. How can a Christian be "born again"? Jesus never said that a Christian is born again. I think that this terminology is one of the errors "born again" people make that turns off people.
Jesus said the unregenerate man must be born again and then he becomes a Christian.
John 3:3 Jesus answered him, I assure you, most solemnly I tell you, that unless a person is born again (anew, from above), he cannot ever see (know, be acquainted with, and experience) the kingdom of God.
Jesus is addressing an unbeliever here. The reason I ask this is that I get weary of some of the arrogance in the "born again" community who put down simple Christian churches who do not use this terminology but most certainly have real Christians in them.
I am hoping that some will make a comment regarding this and not attack me for having an honest question. Thanks..

Nancy, a person who is really a Christian is one who is regenerate.
The term "born-again Christian" (just my opinion) stands in contrast with all the other forms of 'Christianity' which are not evangelical, yet they retain a vestige of the religion. For example, the Episcopalian Bishop of New Hampshire would tell you that he is indeed a "Christian"--yet I doubt that he would have much in common with evangelicals.
In the South, "born-again Christian" has the same effect as such phrases as "sweet milk", "tuna fish" or "ink pen".

The term: "born again" is actually a Jewish term, where Jesus was talking to Nicodemus. Nicodemus returned a statement to Jesus by saying: Oiveh...(spelling) how can a man be born again, does he hafto go back into his mudders womb?
This (being Born-Again) was commonly known by the Jews. So this story in Jn. 3 is another great example of How the Lord would talk to people to get there attention.
For a Jew to be born again, he would be first born a jew...secondly, be bar-mitzphasized...(again spelling) and then be married to a jewish woman, and then either enter into rabinical school or graduate from one.
so when Nic said Oivey, I have to go back into my mudders womb, He was thinking that he had to do it all over again, and Jesus explained the process afterwards.
my 2cents eh...

Escaped, am I the only one who spots this stuff:
<font color="0000ff">"born again" is actually a Jewish term...This (being Born-Again) was commonly known by the Jews</font>
Why do you think Nicodemus answered the way he did?

I would be interested in your source material on that one. Where can I find it? (Not yanking your chain, interest is genuine.)

Hi Cordell,
The first time I heard this was from that ARiel Ministry guy...umm, Arnold Frutenbaum (spelling).
I listened to his teaching on the life of Christ from a Jewish perspective...it was interesting. I heard of this from others too, but Dr. FRutenbaum was the first guy that taught it.
