Gee, aaron
Let's jump right in and offend as many people as possible in just one sentence.
I was raised Catholic, but left the church and became a Protestant. People of all faiths "recognize" the Pope, just like people of other countries recognize Pres. Bush. They're both world leaders with great power and influence. You don't have to adhere to someone's beliefs to admire them or at least be respectful towards them when they pass away. Isn't that how all Christians should treat others?

I've been protestant all my life. I differ with the catholics specifically about Mary worshipping. But I really appreciate their and the pope's stand against abortion and euthenasia.

Excuse me, but the original question was why do Protestants recognize the pope, not worship the pope. The only One I worship is God. But I do have the sense to acknowledge world leaders, even if I don't agree with their views/beliefs/politics.
Too bad people don't read more carefully before rattling off insults.

arron (arron)... I reconize the pope because he wears that really big hat and those long gowns, he also has that big ring and rides around in the pope mobile.

arron ...Good I am glad, seems like you could use a smile some times. The protestants have a saying{And I Believe in the Catholic Church} in their creed. And we all remember our big brother that we did not always get along with but it did not stop him from being in our family. Nor did we lose interest in him. That is the Catholic Church, one may break away from ones family but one still remembers the old ties.
Not to blame it all on a man but lets face it old Henry would not have done what he did if he was not wanting to have an a certian woman. GOd sure stuck it to him. He got the woman, but she was sour grapes to him, he lost his family, his wife, got sexual diseases and died insane. Maybe he made a mistake eh? God did not seem happy with him. Not a good idea to make God Cranky. Just kidding, sort of.

Sharon,
The protestant creeds that include the saying "I believe in the catholic church" are not referring to the ROMAN Catholic Church. Catholic means comprehensive or universal -- the protestant creeds are saying that they believe in a spiritual body composed of all true believers worldwide and throughout time regardless of denominational affiliation or lack of it.
