Tanacu, Romania - A Romanian Orthodox priest who ordered the crucifixion of a young nun because she was "possessed by the devil" and now faces murder charges was unrepentant on Saturday as he celebrated a funeral mass for his alleged victim.

"God has performed a miracle for her, finally Irina is delivered from evil," Father Daniel, 29, the superior of the Holy Trinity monastery in north-eastern Romania, said before celebrating a short mass "for the soul of the deceased", in the presence of 13 nuns who showed no visible emotion.

He insisted that from the religious point of view, the crucifixion of Maricica Irina Cornici, 23, was "entirely justified", but admitted that he faced excommunication as well as prosecution, and was seeking a "good lawyer".

Cornici had entered the monastery just three months before Cornici was found dead on Wednesday, gagged and chained to a cross, after fellow nuns called an ambulance, according to police.

Mihaela Straub, spokesperson for the police in the province of Vaslui, said Daniel and four other nuns had claimed Cornici was possessed and should be exorcised.

Before being crucified she had been kept shut up for several days, her hands and feet tied and without food or drink, he said.

Cornici had entered the monastery just three months before, after visiting a friend who was a nun there, police said.

As her coffin entered the church of the monastery Saturday no church bells were sounded while nuns cast distrustful glances at the strangers, including two AFP reporters, present at the ceremony.

'She can't be laid in the church because she was possesed'. Claps of thunder from an approaching storm were sometimes the only sounds to break the silence. "This storm is proof that the will of God has been done," Daniel said.

"You see it?" said the priest, gesturing at the body, lying in an annexe and still showing the marks of the gag. One of the nuns, Sister Martha, added, "She can't be laid in the church because she was possesed."

Daniel has lived for the past four years in the isolated monastery located in the hills of one of the poorest regions of Romania, without running water or electricity.

"Over there, in your world, the people must know that the devil exists. Personally I can find his work in the gestures and speech of possessed people, because man is often weak and lets himself be easily manipulated by the forces of evil," said the bearded young priest.

"I don't understand why journalists are making such a fuss about this. Exorcism is a common practise in the heart of the Romanian Orthodox church and my methods are not at all unknown to other priests," he said.

A 34-year-old parishioner who had come to defend Daniel and gave her name as Dora, said Sister Irina " had to be punished, she had an argument with the Father during a Sunday mass and insulted him in front of the congregation."

Sociologist Alred Bulai said that corporal punishment was still commonly used in certain Romanian monasteries.

"It's happening particularly in the isolated monasteries, where the superiors have difficulty understanding the current realities and adapting themselves to modern life," Bulai said.

Since the fall of the communist regime in December 1989, the Orthodox Church, which represents 85 percent of Romania's 22 million inhabitants, is rated in many opinion polls as the most trusted institution in the country.

Vitalie Danciu, the superior of a nearby monastery at Golia, called the crucifixion "inexcusable", but a spokesperson for the Orthodox patriarchate in Bucharest refused to condemn it. "I don't know what this young woman did," Bogdan Teleanu said. - Sapa-AFP

Well that's from my country. And that's the religion that I left when I came to Christ. Those are the 'priests' that dictate religion in Eastern Europe. That's Eastern Orthodoxy that even started to make adepts in US (see my quarrel with some fellows from Campus Crusade for Christ on another thread). Exorcism is seen as the most spiritual practice in East. Orthodoxy and what you got in the news is therefore one of the most spiritual people from that religion. I love my country and my culture, but East. Orthodoxy is a deviation from Christianity.

Overseas,
Will that priest be upheld in what he did by the government their or will he be prosecuted and killed. And if this is the only type of Christianity that was represented in this part of the world no wonder some people hate our country that calls itself a Christian nation. What I mean is if they only see a distorte side I can not blame anyone for hating us. But Christianity in most parts I hope is not like this.

Hello Turtle. There is a long story to tell about East European (EE) culture and Eastern Orthodox Christianity (EOC). Fact is that traditionally EE populations consider themselves to be the true representatives of Christianity and they are quite intolerant to other forms of Christianity. Well, except RCC which coexists here historically for a small percentage of people. Which is not very surprising as EOC is very close to RCC. We have a long tradition of brutalities against evangelicals that spread the gospel here, even these days. As one woman declared to me once, Jesus was surely an Eastern Orthodox man ! I came from this environment and I was a practicing EOC for some years, visiting monasteries, doing good deeds for redemption of my sins, lighting candles for dead and so on.
Back to topic, there is a favorable environment for what (sadly) happened to the young woman. Exorcists are considered top of EOC by religious population and many people follow them blindly. When I came to Christ and Bible (thus leaving EOC), I was opposed with the following argument: during an exorcism, some evil spirits allegedly said that only EOC is the true Christian church while evangelicals were wrong (that being on a tape). That was creepy, huh ? The death of this woman is only the top of the iceberg because it made it to the newspapers. Well yes, probably this case will be prosecuted. But sad part is that many people believe this was right and the monk did the right thing. Many years ago I would have had same opinion.

Overseas,
I am just taken away by your testimony about coming out of the EOC, and the trials that Bible-believing Christians are facing in your country. I hadn't seen any of your posts until you began replying to Jason in the thread about "Jesus only", but I have been intrigued by what you have to say. I really appreciate your opening up like this with us, to give us a glimpse of how difficult life is for Christians in other places, and how in the US, what we think is persecution is really nothing compared to what you may face. I had been under the impression that the EOC was pretty straight forward, if not a little traditionalist. So I appreciate your explaining. I also had no idea this situation was that prevalent in Romania.

God Bless you daily as you continue pressing on for Christ!

Doug P.

(My wife and I adopted our son from Romania. That is why I have such an interest in your country.)

God bless you Doug. I pray for your kid so that he will also be a blessing to both of you.
Well I am not fond of talking too much on EOC cause it is easy to get angry on them and I would not be balanced that way. But fact is Romania and EE countries have a strong EOC background which is based on occult traditions (should see how EOC burries someone here, you would think some of the practices are wicca), Bible illiteracy (priests say it is their job to read the Bible), obedience to priests (I did that some years cause it was the only way of worship i knew) and intolerance to evangelicals is seen as a top virtue. I used to translate for US missionaries visiting our villages, there are many places where priests call people to stone evangelicals. On the other hand, the Lord helped in establishing a strong evan community here that starts to make Bible known around.
But incidents like 'nun crucified' reveal what EOC fosters and tolerates. I am reluctant to talk about real persecution these days but you can get it easily if you start witnessing.
Again God bless your family.

Overseas,
Thank you for taking time to share some of your testimony. I do not know to much about romania except what the press tells and a christian news source. I am surprised how willing you are to share because of the lack of tolerance in your country. I will keep your family and you in my prays. And i praise God he opened your eyes to the truth. All who truely seek God will find Him.
