Spiritual Gifts are very real today. But, there is a lot of false at the same time. I don't believe that people intentionally fake it. But, I think they are just so cuaght up in it they can't tell the difference in their own thoughts and God's.
The best way to tell if someone is faking it. Is if what they say comes to pass. If someone says a person is healed and they are still sick. Then it is fake. If someone prophesys and it doesn't come to pass. It's fake.
I have seen people who God has spoke through, and what he said came to pass exactly right. God doesn't leave room for errors. There are no ifs or buts. It is yea or nay. People are useing if and but in their prophesies. That leaves room for error. So if it don't come to pass they can blame you.
Jesus can use anyone for his purpose. Such as healing. It is not our faith in who is praying for us, but, our faith in Jesus that makes us whole. So people can go to a healing meeting of some big time preacher who is a quack and still be healed. Not by their faith in the preacher, but, in their faith in God.

I believe in the biblical gifts of the Holy Spirtit but not in umbiblical manifestations.
The following web sites shows that the same unbiblical manifestations like (un) holy laughter, a whole range of farmyard and other animal noises manifestations etc. can also be seen in the Collie's Kundalini Signs and Symptoms a New Age document. Please click on the first web site. The second one is the same in spanish.
www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~emcd/Powers3.htm (http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~emcd/Powers3.htm)
http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~emcd/Powers3_Spanish.htm
Some unbiblical manifestations seen in the church today like the Toronto Experience, [un] holy drunkness etc. are listed in the bible as a sign of judgement on Babylon! eg see Jer 51: 35-58, Jer 51:45.
Here is another link about the Toronto manifestacions.
www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~emcd/openletterng2.htm (http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~emcd/openletterng2.htm)
Falling Backwards: is another manifestation NOT found in the New Testament Church. In the bible we can see that only those who are opposing God go backwards or fall in this way. eg. John 18:6, Isa:1:4; 28:12-13 and Jer 7:24. Saints in the bible did not fall for no reason in this way.
Saints in the scriptures always fall forwards whenever a direction is specified eg.Ezek 3:23; Matt 17:6, Rev.11:16. Saints in the bible only fall for good understandable reasons and not because an unseen force knocks them over or controls them.
Carpet time/floor time: This involuntary sleep is not found in The New Testament Church although it is found among the list of judgement on APOSTACY eg Isa:56:9-11;Jer 51:57:58 and Isa 29:1-10.
In the Mid 1980's well after I left a latter rain cult called Maranatha, I went with a Christian friend to visit a church where an American group was visiting. Everyone who was touched by the members of this group from the USA was falling backwards and were left for a few minutes lying in the floor in a trance-like state.
The first thing that came to my mind was that I have never seen these manifestations in the bible and I strongly felt that these manifestacions did not come from the Holy Spirit. I did not feel peace. I prayed in the name of Jesus Christ a simple prayer. I said to God if this weird unbiblical manifestation do not come from you protect me and my christian friend from falling backwards on the floor. We were the only two outside the American group who did not fall backwards. My friend did not know about my prayers.
Blessings,

Jason stone,
You say you have seen people who “God” spoke through and what they said came to pass. Tell me, who is it you’re talking about, and what did he say that came to pass? Can you give me an example of anyone who has healed someone who was terminally ill, with proof of that illness, through some sort of “spiritual gift?” If you’re going to say such things, that you believe in these kind of gifts, you’re going to have to offer proof, otherwise it’s all speculation and wishful thinking. I want names, dates, and proof of such manifestations. You might as well say that you saw someone walk on water and have us believe it just because you said it was so.

pilgrim, I don't know if you meant for your post to be funny, but I laughed right out loud. The image of two young people watching others fall backwards around them, and praying that you would not fall backwards also. Praying to God was great, but praying that you not fall backwards was so funny. I would probably have prayed too. Thank you! I have to ask. Did your friend run or stay? I would have said a quick prayer and ran. http://www.factnet.org/discus/clipart/lol.gif

I believe that the gifts are in operation today. I also believe that abuses cause some to not believe. Paul had to deal with abuses in the city of Corinth.
Pilgrim,
In John 18, when Jesus is being arrested, verse 6 shows that the temple guards fell backwards when Jesus said "I am he". This was the power of the Holy Spirit; there is no other meaning.
Your simple prayer at that meeting is cute. You had never seen anything like it, you were unsure and uneasy. Many people pray, as did you, when events happen that they percieve as wierd. The fact that you did not fall is not proof that it was false.
I am cautious about ministers who manifest this during all of their meetings. Sometimes, I feel that people will fall by the power of suggestion. That does not negate the fact that I know that God uses this to minister to a person.

I believe many times "the move" in churches today highlighting the "gifts of the spirit" are taking the glory that belongs to God and wrongly bestowing it on undeserving men. That is man worshipping. That leads to cults.
All glory goes to God. None to man!

I guess if we are supposed to take literally the fact that some guards fell back when Jesus spoke, we should be bringing pigs to church for the evil spirits to go into upon the order of a preacher, or dead people for the preachers to raise from the dead?
I would be cautious about any minister who 'manifest' this during their meetings.

"I Guess if we were to take literally the fact that some guards fell back..."
What do you mean by this?

As you suggested (by quoting this verse) that falling over backwards is evidence of the work of the Holy Spirit, and yet these preachers aren't casting out evil spirits or raising the dead. If they claim the power that Jesus had, why aren't they? Have you heard of 'taking the path of least resistance'? I am suggesting that some preachers use people's emotions to convince them that all they have to do is fall over backwards as a 'sign' they are moved by the Holy Spirit. The Bible says men want signs. Jesus told the Pharisees that they would not believe Him even if they saw 'signs'. He was right. Even when he raised Lazarus from the dead, they did not believe Him.
People today still require signs. One person here called it 'practicing the fruits', another said they would not be convinced without seeing 'fruits'. The fruits are not falling over backwards or speaking in tongues. Fruits are:
To live wisely (Rom. 16:19, Eph. 5:15, Col. 4-5)
To walk by faith (2 Cor. 5:7)and abound in faith (2 Cor. 8:7, to take up the shield of faith (Eph. 6:16, and pursue faith 1 Tim. 6:12, 2 Tim. 2:22)
To teach others the truths of God (Matt.28:20, 2 Tim 2:2, 24)
To serve one another in love (Gal. 5:13) and to minister to others (Rom. 12:7)
To exhort one another daily (Heb.3:13)
To give "not grudgingly or of necessity" but cheerfully (2 Cor.9:7)
To be merciful (Luke 6:36, James 2:13)
These things are evidence of love, the greatest gift. (1 Corinthians 13)
When unbelievers see these fruits in a person, it is then they desire to know and to be like them. It is then we can lead them to Jesus Christ.

I contend that the seeming use of the gifts in modern times is an deceptive infection of humanism into the body of Christ. Rather than giving the glory to God in the questionable use of the gifts of the spirit, man is seeking glory to them. Look at all of the poofy haired preacher men on tv with their thousand dollar suits laying on hands shouting "Heal"! They are craving to be worshipped. They are trying to usurp the glory that belongs to God. That is Humanism. That is man worship!

Let's expose them when they come to our town we should protest they are fools and shouldn't be aloud to steel God's limelight and steal money from the poor and indigent in the name of Jesus-sorry I spelled humble wrong in the above text-warr
