Just when I thought I had heard it all, the following appeared in a CompuServe discussion on Battlefield Earth's "bestseller" status:
I have a relative who participated in this. She and other Scientologists would go to B. Dalton's and buy multiple copies of BE with church money in order to cheat its way onto the best seller lists. This is what the claim of "one of the best selling science fiction novels" comes from.
