According to the Associated Press [3/5/98], the German delegation that
spent a week in the United States returned to Germany convinced that
Scientology is even more dangerous than they presumed.

The German officials visited the US to research Scientology with experts
and government counterparts here, and to defend the position Germany
takes regarding Scientology. Germany views Scientology as an extremist
anti-democratic cult and refuses to recognize Scientology as a religion,
the same position the US took until 1993.

Scientology's celebrity members have accused Germany of religious
persecution for its stance on Scientology. Germany says its problems
with Scientology revolve not around the group's beliefs but around its
actions -- actions for which other European countries have forced the
cult from their borders.
