Urgent Cultgate Update: Travolta to do damage control on Clinton situation on Entertainment Tonight
[February 24, 1998]
Tonight John Travolta will attempt to do damage control for Clinton and Scientology on the Entertainment Tonight (ET) TV show. The Travolta interview was announced in a special ET promotion.
What to expect? The Clinton Administration has been taking a lot a flack over the Cultgate Travolta episode, in which Clinton told Travolta (a Scientologist) he would help out Scientology in Germany just before Travolta started filming a movie in which he plays a fictional alter-ego of the president. Travolta says his portrayal of the president is very positive.
The administration -- along with the intelligence division of Scientology -- most likely has been grooming Travolta to downplay the president's role in this affair, to reduce the negative attention surrounding Clinton and Scientology. In addition, the producers of the movie, Primary Colors, are probably concerned and may have helped arranged the TV interview. After all, Primary Colors now looks like a whitewash. And Hollywood remembers the last time a cult's political motives drove a movie project: the $30 - $40 million Inchon Moonie movie was a box office disaster.
There is already talk of a global boycott of Primary Colors as a whitewashed Scientology non-event. See what may be Travolta's best performance yet tonight on ET!
