Scientology launches attack on two web sites (1/30/98)
Scientology has threatened the owners of two web sites with legal action unless they make changes to their pages.
Ray Randolph, owner of the "Scientology Kills" web site is accused of trademark violation for using "Scientology" in his domain name and selling t-shirts from his site at which say "$cientology KILLS!"
Tilman Hausherr in Berlin runs the second site. Scientology disputes his use -- through altered graphics -- of "$" in spelling Scientology and his depiction of Scientology's leader with a Pinocchio nose, suggesting he is a liar. Mr. Hausherr contends the images are parodies.
Scientology has threatened to sue both Randolph and Hausherr unless they remove the "trademark violations" from their web sites. As reported January 29, 1998 by CNET, "The warnings are the latest in a long string of actions taken by the church involving the Internet. Web sites owners have been raided, computers have been seized, and Net access providers have been asked to remove newsgroup postings that the church finds objectionable."
Both Randolph and Tilman have details on Scientology's threats (including actual letters from Scientology) on their respective web sites, which are still on the Internet at the time of this writing. Be sure to see Ray Randolph's "Scientology Kills" at http://www.scientology-kills.net and Tilman Hausherr's "Parodies of Scientology web graphics" at http://www.snafu.de/~tilman/cos_fun/parody_images.html.
