I hear this foster child/adoptive organization is like a cult. Anyone have experience with them? |

I stumbled on your question through Google and registered so I could answer it. I have been a foster parent of a teen-ager for two years now. Being a foster kid is never easy, but Casey Family Services has been great in helping to cope with difficult circumstances. If by "cult" you mean that Casey tries to indoctrinate - I see no sign of that. A social worker meets with the teen every month or so, but that is just to make sure that things are going well. When my spouse and I started foster parenting, the only "indoctrination" was going through a screening and training process to help ensure that we knew how to be good parents. Our teen has been in a number of homes in the last decade, but Casey worked to find a situation that worked. Now we and our teen are happy together. When 18 comes, Casey will sign a contract and continue to provide support for college as long as the student keeps up the GPA etc. I would love to share more, but need to respect confidentiality. From discussions I have had with other foster families, I think being a "Casey-kid" is much better than just being supported by the state through the state agency. I do not know a great deal about the Casey - I think they were founded by the man who started UPS and who was himself a foster child. He wanted to make life better for children coping with similar circumstances. You don't get into foster care without bad things having happened to you, but hooking up with Casey will probably fall into the category of good things. Good luck. |

I worked as an IT person for Casey and it is a wonderful organization..I will give you the quick rundown from what I know. I hope this clarifies a little bit. I will tell you that is was one of the most positive work experiences I have ever had. Annie E. Casey was the mother of John Casey the founder of UPS. He started a foundation in her name to help communities out. One of the problems he was running into at UPS is there were kids behaiving poorly with his shipping business. He found that theses people had been foster kids and he figured if he helped them out he would make it better for society and UPS. He then CFS is fully funded by the Annie E. Casey Family is nothing short of a fantastic organization. We were foster parents through them and the support, both emotional and otherwise, was incredible! Don't sell them short. It's a great example of privately funded social service work! Bob |
