What exactly is the definition of a cult? I'm doing some research for a school project, and came across this message board. I decieded it would be good to get information from you people here who by the looks of it are pretty well educated on the subject. So if you could please tell me exactly what a cult is and what the people in it do? | ||

The definition of a cult is Scientology' which literally means; 'science of stealing your money through lying, intimidation and mind control'. "Enforced agreement is the only thing holding the ridiculous cult of Scn together! I know several staff members that would go and get food at the local charity soup kitchen just to keep from starving. This was as recent as 8 months ago. In Dianetics Modern Science of Mental Health, L. Ron Hubbard misrepresents Dianetics as a Science that has been carefully researched and scientifically proven, when the truth is that he wrote the book in 6 weeks, off the top of his head". I tend to lean toward the idea that a cult is simply the physical destination of any mind with an aberrative set of life skills. Ever since the 1950's the world has been focused upon that "final fronteer". However much like trying to forcast a weeks worth of local weather ... It's not all that easy to get it right. Normal is a moving target in todays' society I believe, but a deep desire to find fulfilement in the favour of a strong leader and therein find personal validation for living, no matter how it looks to others is a good place to start for accessing if one is a potential cultist. That's only part of the picture for sure because- In a sense it kind of describes anyone who wants to live a radical life for Christ as well; ... the strong leader being Jesus himself. In the past couple of weeks the media of the world has been focusing on home grown terrism here in Toronto. My contention is that the minds of these teenagers were ripe and fertile for the propagating of violence in as much as it fits neatly into the framework of the faith they were born into.The fertilizer was the spirit of rebellion and the chemical was testosterone; (an explosive mix.) | ||

If i was to say that freedom is also about doing good things as well as the faculty of doing bad (the reason why peace doesnt last) is that implying its ok to do bad because we are free to excersise our freedom? Or is it considered a reference to brainwashing? | ||

Dear people, I am a london based art student, doing a project about brainwashing, persuasion and mind control. I am hugely interested in cults and new religiouos groups and would like to find out a bit more about the various ways of how they use their persuasion/ mind control techniques. I am interested in the psychological process of brainwashing, persuasion, hypnotising, and would like to find out what the psychological damages caused by these groups are. Ideally I would like to meet up with ex-cult members, london based, but I would also be extremely interested in hearing more from you via this discussion board.
