1. Subtle Power of Spiritual Abuse.} 2. Tapes and books by Ken Blue. 3. Authentic relationships with balanced, Word-grounded followers of Jesus. 4. Praying and being prayed for. 5. Long talks with other ex-members, especially my family. 6. Moving on--doing things that I wouldn't do in HH, such as cut my hair or go to college. 7. Circling back around--appreciating things such as gardening, hard work, and skills I gained there. 8. Letting spiritual leaders see me as I really am...warts and all...and meeting with acceptance, encouragement, and offers of accountable, 'spurring-one-another-on' relationship. 9. Immersing myself in the Word--I can't believe how encouraging it is! 10. Trying out different churches and staying friends with people from ones I tried out and decided weren't for me. |

Those are all wonderful things that helped us too, bekah. One thing that helped me a lot was the study Search for Significance by Robert McGee. It helped me realize that my relationship with God and His acceptance of me wasn't contingent on my efforts, and it also helped me to deeply forgive. Until I did the study, I didn't even realize that I had unforgiveness toward certain people who had hurt me and my family...as I spent time in prayer I found horrible memories surfacing from my HH days that I hadn't thought about in years. I was able to let go and forgive, which brought so much healing and wholeness. And freedom!!! It's a great study. I'd recommend it to anyone. |

waawaa, i know you're joking most of the time and just trying to give us ex-Homesteaders a hard time--and you are pretty funny. But i hear the cry for help in your sarcasm and i hear the despair in your jabs. I hope you find your way to Jesus. He's real, He loves you, and He is waiting for you to come to Him. His blood shed for you paid the penalty for every sin you have ever committed or will ever commit. He freely forgives you and calls you to turn your life over to Him. It works. He truly is alive and His word is true. I love you. |

Waawaa, your insights are interesting, to say the least... I think one of the reasons some of these "Bitter Losers" are here is to help other ex-members not turn to booze and drugs to help them "recover". If you are who I think you are, then I am sure you know that I turned to some of those things myself, so maybe I have no right to speak. But I assure you, resolutions to problems are never found in the bottom of the bottle. A wild party maybe, but not the answers some people here are seeking. If nothing else, you're entertaining though. |

Things that have helped me: Friends who have encouraged me to seek God's face, His will for my life, and to realize His love, and not just seek His hands and what He can do for me or give me. Books such as Classic Christianity by Bob George and Outrageous Love by Shelia Walsh. Another favorite would be Grace Works by Dudley Hall. Taking time to study the Bible (especially Romans) for myself, spending time in prayer, and drawing neared to my Jesus. Remaining in contact with other people who've faced the same trials, experience the same things I have, and are also finding Peace in Jesus. Since posting here I've been blessed to come back in contact with dowen and truth_hunter. It's encouraging to hear how God has been faithful to us all. Also, forgiving those who've hurt me, praying for them and loving them has helped tremendously. I may be too far away to talk to them and visit them, but I can continue to love and pray for them and hope that God will allow me to show them His love someday. I'd love to just reach out and tell those people about the Love and Peace I've found. That it is possible to be a Christian outside of HH (which I was taught was pretty much impossible) and that our lives in Christ can truly be abundant and full of Grace! |

Waawaa, I realized you weren't Nathan right after I posted that. Wonder how Nathan and Caleb are doing? And Beniah and Zuri and Joe Slack and Danielle? I wish they'd read these. I so hope for them to find out that there is a place for them in Jesus and in the Church outside of HH. |

Thank you, Bekah, for starting this thread. Thanks also to charity and urka. Some very good advice. I am just now getting around to reading "The Subtle Power of Spiritual Abuse," and I'm finding it very enlightening reading. I wish I had known about the book years ago. A couple of quotes from the book: "In the church or family that is spiritually abusive, there is a sense, spoken or unspoken, that 'others will not understand what we're all about, so let's not let them know--that way they won't be able to ridicule or persecute us.' There is an assumption that (1) what we say, know, or do is a result of our being more enlightened than others; (2) others will not understand unless they become one of us; and (3) others will respond negatively." And: "In a place where authority is grasped and legislated, not simply demonstrated, persecution sensitivity builds a case for keeping everything within the system. Why? Because of the evil, dangerous, or unspiritual people outside of the system who are trying to weaken or destroy "us." This mentality builds a strong wall or bunker around the abusive system, isolates the abusers from scrutiny and accountability, and makes it more difficult for people to leave--because they will then be outsiders, too. While it is true that there is a world of evil outside of the system, there is also good out there. But people are misled into thinking that the only safety is in the system." |

Hey Youngsters, What a delightful thread. I was not reading the web page when these were written but I am blessed by what I see here. Hope things are going well for all of you'll. Thanks for the helpful information on things to read. I do not know if any of you all are still reading here but in case you are I receieved tremendous help from Phillip Yancey's book "What Is So Amazing About Grace?" Later there was a book from Chuck Swindoll entitled "Grace Awakening". Keep fighting the good fight of faith! Under Grace |

I'm glad to see this one come up again. I've been wondering what things were helpful to people, not immediately, but further out, say a year or two when the shock has begun to wear off and the enormity of it has soaked in and life starts to be "normal" again. |
