With so many versions of the Bible in use, let's each of us say which version we personally use, and why that one rather than the others? This is NOT a DISCUSSION thread. This is simply for future reference. PLEASE NO DISCUSSION IN HERE, just a clear statement by each of us to answer the questions. I use the 1769 KJV, as illuminated by the Joseph Smith Translation. I use this one because the errors are not generally important to doctrine, and because it's the one which I grew up using when I was a Protestant. Who about everyone else? |

Hi, I mainly use the New American Bible, a Catholic translation. I like the way it reads and it is a good translation. It is also the version that is (generally) used in Catholic Liturgies in the US. I've been told by individuals who have degrees in Scripture, that the RSV (Revised Standard Version) is the most accurate on the modern English version. I've used to use it, in fact, it was the revision I was reading when I made my commitment to the Lord. I don't like the way it reads though. I've also used in the past the Jerusalem Bible and years ago, the Good News version. In general, I'd say, it doesn't matter what version you use, provided you use one. EGK |

I just wanted to throw my two cents into this mix--and see if we can get some others to respond, as well: My personal study Bible is the New American Bible Study Edition, but my favorite for language overall is The Confraternity Edition. I also use the following on a regular basis: The Greek Orthodox Study Bible The Jerusalem Bible (for the Psalms which were translated by and commentated on by JRR Tolkien) The Revised Standard Version, Catholic Edition 1611 King James Version, fascimile, with Apocrypha (BTW:, the original 1769 ed. included the same) Goodspeed's An American Translation, University of Chicago, with Apocrypha 1901 American Standard New World Translation in all it's versions 1951-1984 (but not because I want to) I rely on about a dozen other translations and original language Interlinears [like Nestle's and Wescott and Hort's] in my work, but not as regularly as those above. In His Grace, miki |

I tend to read whichever Bible translation I put my hand to (I collect translations -- hmn, I don't have the Greek Orthodox one.) I like _The Five Books of Moses_ translated by Fox becuase it gives the sense of reading in Hebrew. I sometimes I like the style and ecumenical background of the _New English Bible_ (I'd rather read then try to remember the history of doctrine and interpretation for other translations' sponsoring denominations), but if I'm working I read the _HarperCollins Study Bible_ or the _Oxford Annotated Bible_ (both are editions of the _New Revised Standard Version_), or whichever original language I'm working with. -Kushana |
