Hi gang I am trying to locate a man who was in the Rumford Maine branch ministry (it no longer exists). His name is John Williams and he is in Baltimore. He married a nice lady named Sandy. Friends from the old home town branch are simply looking to reconnect with him...no "ministry" talk, we just miss him. If anyone knows how he can be reached please will you email me? Thank you. There was a Mike Freed from the Philadelphia area, that was friends with (pastor) Ken Alpern. They did some bible studies (Carlisle, York, Pa.) together a little back in late 1984/ early 1985. This Mike Freed made the mistake of making some honest observations about Carl Steven's cult like behavior. He was written off after that. He wasted no time in hanging around as he saw TBS for what it was. |

Was Mike Freed a Jewish, black curly haired guy? If so, he used to give me rides home from work, as his wife worked a few stores down from me in Pittsfield, at the time. He used to sing and play piano, right? He had a really good voice. The first Bible study that I did while I was in Lenox, was with Ken Alpren, in New Haven, Conn. Are he and his wife Melissa, I think, still together? |

His wife's name was Phyllis. I believe they are divorced. We talked with Mike in '85, haven't heard from his since. He was a very gifted song-writer. I'll never forget one of his songs: "Oh, how can there be an answer to everybody's dreams? Though some may tell you they know for sure, still the answer is not what it seems. There once was a fool, they called him, abused Him as the worst. But oh how he loved us! His love, for sure, has filled the whole universe." |

I remember Mike singing that song while playing piano accompaniment. I did not know he wrote it. It had a haunting beauty the way he sang it, and I' always liked it. Thanks Anova for reminding us. |

I remember Jim Sivo singing Mike's songs. What a great guy Jim was, many moons ago --- heart of gold, sincere to the core. What ever happened to him? I also wonder about John D. Thomas and Patty, does anyone know? I loved those guys, and totally lost touch with them when my X and I divorced (though JD dropped a note and donuts at my house once when I wasn't home. It was a very loving gesture, b/c I'd been "marked" and avoided since my X left, and I always wanted to let him know that it meant a lot to me.) John, if you're reading, "thanks" and I think of you, Patty and your boys still. There are no words sometimes .... Deb |

The best man at my wedding was David Holland back in Framingham at Charlotte Dunning School in 1977 on Nov.20. My wife and I where the first couple to get married there. If any one knows where David is or what became of him please let me know. I haven't seen him in so very many years. He seemed to have vanished in the late 70's. Sure would be nice to talk to him again. We used to ride to S.Berwick on Thursday nights before I got married. The guy really loved the Lord. } |

Yes, hey_you, that is the John and Patty Thomas that I was referring to. It's been a looooong time since I've been on factnet, but my email automatically received a copy of your post - - - thanks for responding. Do you know anything about the Thomas family today? I hope they're all well. Carl must be almost 30 now. Too weird. I'm now humming that old song by Mike F. It continues with the bridge ... "Once my life was filled with tears A wounded life with empty years. Now my Lord has filled me up With loving kindness and my cup runneth over." (Or something close to that.) Be well, all. Deb |

Yeah, Deb.. I'm making a list of emails, too.. I remember that John was so proud of naming his son.. ahhh yeah... but they were great, really. John came to the cafeteria in SB, fresh from the movies (ohmygod he went to a movie!) and went on and on about this trailer he saw for Star Wars! "They had these flashlights and this beam came out and they started using them like swords! it was unbelievable!") He was always so animated... "I Hate arthritis... it made Ben Gay!" such a clown.. |

Bluesman... I know John and Nikki Duvall. She's Greek, right? They were doing rental property in the Berkshires, I think... that was some years ago... and I'm not a quality source of old memories for sure, but I think they may have sold what they had and moved. I received an email from someone wanting to give hey_you a message. Here it is. I will try and help this person to register, if they want to. Here is the message by copy and paste. Hope that's OK. Coral : I was wondering if you would help me get a message to hey_you regarding John Thomas. I remember John Thomas when I first came to Bible Speaks in Hartford CT. He was a tall skinny man with red hair. He had 3 sons and a very pleasant wife. They use to live off of Prospect street in Hartford CT. He was a security guard. I remember at one point he had lost his job. The entire church was abuzz about how they were supporting themselves. Then he just disappeared. We never saw or heard from him again. The rumor I was told was that John Thomas had left his wife for one of the Paradise children. (The father then an official in the church)and the child was then 18. I know this isn't a happy report, but it's what I saw and heard. Just sign me Shadow819641 |

I am posting for Shadow819641 until she can register: I spent most of the day yesterday reading Factnet. Its nice to know I wasn't the only one who went through the type of problems TBS presented to me. I didn't really have that much exposure to carl. My exposure was to his followers in Hartford CT. I was recruited the day I started college at the University of Hartford. It was there that I was introduced to Davar, Craig, and Coteen Daniels. I had a friend in college named Cathy Molnar,-she married Coteen-out of wedlock. Last I knew she was living in Baltimore with her husband and children. I remember the day she left for Baltimore, she gave me a box of things to "hold on to"for her". I never really heard from her after that. I do remember that she seemed to advance faster in the church faster than me, and as this happened, we grew further apart. The friendship was pretty much over when she left. Davar, Craig and Coteen were the "college connections". We usually hung around with them. We went to cook outs, and bible study, and softball games. Even though our college studies were suppose to be our top priority, Church 3X' s per week seemed to be more important. . When I graduated college, Davar, Craig, and Coteen , along with Cathy suddenly were called to Baltimore. I wanted to go, but something just didn't feel right. Maybe because Phil Mawaka told me he would tell my parents I was OK, and nothing more. (vanishing didn't seem right at the time) and my relationship with my family was strained at this point. So I stayed with the church. I remember fighting with my family all the time about the church, and my family calling and threatining the church. I still went to services. About this time, I was hanging with Paster Stambosky and his family. I would babysit his three kids, Johnathan, Micha, and Seth. I always did it for free, and was upset when he picked someone else to do it. I latter found out the church elders felt I was looking for a "daddy figure".. It was also at this time I ment a young gentleman who I feel in love with.( I would rather not give his name). We became tight, and at one point we were having conversations about marrige. The church, however, didn't like the idea of 2 people , young in the faith, being together. Suddenly we were broken up, and he married someone else. To this day I never have gotten over it. Seeing how unhappy I was, I was paired up with a woman named Angela Murphy. If I remember right, she lived in the basement of a pastors house and was like a servant on call. This woman, who was suppose to be my example of Christian living, got pregnant by a co-worker and had a kid. Suddenly she too was out of the picture. |

Continued from Shadow819641: After that point in time, my slide from the church was faster than a speeding bullet . At the time, I didn't have a car, and when I called for rides, no one seemed to be able to give me a ride. I went to church less and less, and eventually stopped all together. I felt like the heavens had opened up and out I had come. I didn't feel comfortable talking to anyone,(only TBS people were good enough to talk too- everyone else was an enemy) and at this point I had no family I could turn to. I really felt like I had hit rock bottom. I still have problems, caused to some degree from this church, and I am working on them. The one happy thought I do have is seeing Phil Mawaka in the rear view mirror, so to speak. I have worked out a lot of my issues with the church. Since I have left this church, I have never gone to any church at any time, and I am not exactly a people person. I would love to join Factnet, but when I try to register, I get an Error message that states that Fact net won't accept AOL. Any suggestions? Sign me Shadow819641 P.S. I know it is easier said than done, but I believe that as long as you keep them in your head, they win. You need to do whatever you have to do, and move on.If you aren't concentrating on them all the time, you win. P.S.S. I for the life of me seem to remember the name Dave Draigo, but can't place the face. P.S.S.S. I don't mind you posting this, just tell me where, if you do. |

hey_you..... Done! The following message is from shadow: I tried what you suggested and I still can't seem to get on.... I will go to the library and try the computer over there, maybe I can get somewhere there. I was reading all the stories about Carl and the 6 million. I have memories of that time to. You see, people usually spoke freely around me. I remember our church (Hartford) always looking for volunteers to go to Mass to help them move. This was usually done over the weekend, and I remember people talking about moving in the middle of the night. They talked about the woman all the time, saying how screwed up she was thanks to the deprogrammers, and ha ha, now she has an empty campus all to herself. I also remember Phil Mawaka telling us, out of the blue, that the church was voting on a new name. We were told, that we were now an independent church with no ties to Carl Stevens. What Carl said was true, he never sold his personal messages, Phil Mawaka put those messages in his voice and sold them. That was with Bibles and other religious materials in the bookstore. I also remember Phil telling the church not to talk to any outsiders during this time, and not really giving a reason why. I also believe that about that time, we moved our church and became Hartford Christian Fellowship. It was amazing to me that a rather small group of people (maybe (50)) could raise enough money to go from renting a dance studio to owning a 3 story building out right. I believe Phil also went from renting to owning, at this time too. To me, this just makes me wonder how he got away with this. None of the pastors, or there churches seemed to go through any hard times. This is fraud, and I always thought the law could catch you no matter how old the case. If you have any questions for me, I will be happy to answer anything. As far as I am conserned , Hartford Christian Fellowship is dead to me, but I believe if there is a record to be set straight, count me in. Sign me Shadow 819641 P.S. As always, just let me know if you post this letter and where you post it. |

Does anyone know anything about Dave Munroe? He showed up in S.B. in the mid seventies wearing a woven banana leaf hat. Tall, huge smile, slow talking gentleman who was never in a hurry and had time for everyone. He was in his twenties at that time. Worked with me for a while in Scarborough. When I left the states in '76 he was in Lenox. |

We are the sons of John D. Thomas. We will join our powers with our father to make a tremendous unity of love and bafflement. We can no longer let our family name be spoken from the lips of traitors of the Holy'est Holy work from His Lordship Philip Mawaka. We will sing and dance naked drinking mead before our king! Ablah Ablah Ablah and so it is written not. P.S. Just kidding... If anyone needs to get in touch with John Thomas let me know. I am Evan his #2. thanks |

Maxine, I found this at: www.carlstevens.org It is part of Dave Drago's story, called: "How I moved towards closure" "Hartford was a very unusual year in my life. Chris and I lived in a little apartment in the South End of Hartford (30 Redding Street). This street intersects with Franklin Ave. with all the great Italian Cuisine. We enjoyed the great food. I worked in the church visiting our older members, visiting the sick in the hospital and soul winning. I also started a bible study in East Hartford at Connie D.’s house. This bible study was the highlight of our stay in Hartford. Connie is one of the sweetest people I know. We also became great friends with Vic and Mary Acca, and we still are today. Joe Vecchiola, Dave Stambovsky, Frank Ventrella, and Paul Paradis were all there. "Now, I love Pastor Mawaka. However, he could be very encouraging but also very harsh. I had much growing to do and I needed a little nurturing." He took with an illness during this time and I was in the office by myself on many days. I took a fulltime job at an Auto Rental Company and stuck with the bible study but dropped the other areas. The bible study was growing and I remember P. Mawaka came one week to check it out…things were a little awkward between us after that. My wife was also not too comfortable. She felt like we were put under a microscope by him. I know P. Mawaka was disappointed in me…I got over it. Our relationship became a little strained during this time. "I was learning how to adjust to being hurt and misunderstood and have those you care about disagree with and be disappointed in you." I was learning that God is my sufficiency. I wondered about what God was calling me to do in my life. I look back now and I see too much interference (even though it was sincerely to help) in our lives. The unsolicited advice brought confusion, hurt and also made decisions a little harder for us." That's all... |

Well now... Phil Mawaka is like any other greater grace pastor...a King in his own little Kingdom...not to be questioned or threatened or challenged in any way...what a crock....I am SO thankful not to be caught up in that phony spiritual hierarchy any more. Looking back, they were all alike.... different personalities, but the same "touch not God's anointed" mindset. To see the pastors in other churches treated as normal human beings was a reality check for sure. Now I do not even go to a church because I am rather disillusioned with the hypocrisy and lip service of so many. Perhaps I will again some day but for now I find a freedom in not going. There are not too many that appeal to me in my area anyway. Not that I think I am better in any way, but I am definitely not becoming better by any I have attended |

I was born and raised in the Mawakas' organization. His abuse and distortion of his 'spiritual position' was enough to sicken me at thirteen years old. Eventually, many others opened their eyes to his manipulation and perversion and his following ultimately degraded to a miserable handful. He openly took advantage of so many amiable people, demanding personal and financial sacrifice in the name of God. He abused his position in the church to provide himself with relative luxury. He openly berated people from his pulpit when they made personal decisions he did not approve of. I am thankful that so many of his followers have moved on to healthier lives, and encourage them to not blame themselves, God, or their loved ones for their involvement. As for the Mawakas, I take joy in knowing they rot in their old age - abandoned and exposed. I love knowing that 'no matter how they slice it' nothing can mitigate the truth that they know deep inside - no matter what they tell themselves or others. If you're filing a lawsuit, writing a book, or just curious about this small, relatively unexposed corner of the abomination that has been GGWO, feel free to email me. zack860@hotmail.com -Zack V. didn't the Mawakas come into the ministry through the Springfield church? And then they started the branch in Hartford. I also remember they adopted a black child...he must be in his 20s now...how did that work out, and is their son still in the church with them? They may have even adopted more than one, but I do remember the one |
