Focus On the Menace of Student Cults

--- No-one paid much attention to three cars as they pulled up on the afternoon of Friday 14 June in a car park at the University of Nigeria's campus at Nsukka, in the southeastern state of Enugu State.
All of a sudden, several armed young men jumped out of the cars, raced into a nearby auditorium and opened fire on students swotting for their end-of-semester examinations. By the time the gunsmoke had cleared, 14 students lay dead. Two of the assailants were arrested by fellow students and handed over to the police.
The shock and outrage caused by the massacre reverberated throughout the country, and the university was closed indefinitely.
The police put the blame squarely on campus cults. "The university has been shut down because some cult members went there, shooting and killing innocent people," Nwachukwu Egbochukwu, Enugu State's police commissioner said at the time. The three cars used in the operation, he said, had been snatched at gunpoint from their owners hours before the attack.
The Nsukka massacre was the worst manifestation so far of a cancer that had been spreading in Nigeria's tertiary educational institutions for three decades: the menace of student cults, who visit violence on their rivals in a manner comparable to US street gangs. The attack in Nsukka has been blamed on a group identified as the Vikings, who were on an apparent revenge mission on students thought to belong to a rival gang.
Before the Nsukka incident, the president of the Lagos State University's student union, who had been waging an anti-cults campaign, was stabbed to death by suspected cultists. At the Ibadan Polytechnic in the southwest and universities in Okigwe and Port Harcourt in the southeast, several students also died in shootouts involving rival cult groups.
Barely two weeks after the killings at Nsukka, two students of the University of Ado-Ekiti, in the southwest, were shot dead in their residence by suspected cult members. A few days later the scene of violence shifted to nearby Owo. This time students of the town's polytechnic arrested five cult members following an incident and lynched them.
"At least 250 people have been killed in cult wars in Nigeria's tertiary institutions in the last decade," Emeka Akudi, a sociologist who has been studying the phenomenon, told IRIN. "And as the years pass, the casualty rates appear to be increasing."
Yet, it is a monster with an innocuous beginning. The phenomenon of campus cults in Nigeria has been traced back to 1952, when Wole Soyinka - winner of the 1986 Nobel Peace Prize for Literature - and a group of friends at the University of Ibadan formed the Pyrates Confraternity. Its motto was "Against all conventions".
With the skull and cross bones as their insignia, the Pyrates cultivated a bohemian style that ridiculed the colonial attitudes and mode of dress of the day. This caught on among students and over the next two decades the fraternity, a non-violent body, became established in all universities and tertiary institutions that emerged in post-independence Nigeria.
The emergence of campus cults as they are known in Nigeria today began with a split in the early 1970s in the Pyrates Confraternity. First, a breakaway group formed the Buccaneers Confraternity. Next to emerge was the Black Axe or the Neo-Black Movement. Inter-group rivalry then set in, but skirmishes between them were limited to fist fights.
The 1980s saw the multiplication of cults in the more than 300 institutions of higher learning across Nigeria. New groups such as the Eiye, the Vikings, the Amazons and Jezebels emerged, bringing with them more intensely violent rivalry.
---By the mid-1980s, it had become evident that some of the cults had been co-opted by elements in the intelligence and security services serving the then military government. They were used as foils to the left-wing student unions which, along with university teachers, were among the only remaining bastions of opposition to military rule.
"This was the time guns came into the picture," said Akudi. "Indeed there were instances where some university vice-chancellors actively protected some known cult groups and used them to hound student activists considered troublesome."
He said the existence of traditional ancestral cults, some of which have transformed into contemporary ones, alongside the Free Masons and other esoteric organisations, had favoured the activities of student cults. Members of some of these groups bond together for the purpose of protecting political and economic interests, and this is mimicked by the student cults.
---An editorial on 30 July in the respected daily, The Guardian, attempted an explanation: "The violence associated with the cults currently can be attributed to the general breakdown of values which we once held sacrosanct. The premium attached to human life has plummeted so badly that youths can now kill without flinching ... We therefore cannot combat the cults menace without paying attention to the problems of the larger society."

Twenty Arrested Over Cult Clash

No fewer than 20 suspected cultists have been detained at the Ogun State Police headquarters, Eleweran, Abeokuta over their alleged involvement in the weekend cult clash which led to the killing of three other suspected cult members.
THISDAY gathered that the arrested suspects were said to have been involved in the killing of other members at Onikolobo and Sapon areas of Abeokuta on Friday night.
Informed sources explained that a violent clash had broken out between members of rival Eiye and Buckaneer confraternities on Thursday and spelled over to Friday which later resulted in the killing of the three members.
Further investigation revealed that the clash saw the use of dangerous weapons with several persons receiving serious matchet cuts.

Teenage Students Expelled for Secret Cult Activities

SOME secondary school students, whose ages range between 13 and 16 years have been expelled from their schools for their participation in secret cult activities.
To this end, 70 students of various secondary schools in the state as well as some others from The Polytechnic, Calabar have been expelled.
In a circular letter MOE/S.093/vol.111/492 dated August 8, 2002 and signed by the Commissioner for Education, Dr. Zana Itienbe Akpagu, the government said it "would not rest on its oars until the society is rid of these social miscreants."
In it, the government said, "arising from the state security report on the activities of secret cults in our institutions and in line with the state security council decision on cultism in the state, government has established the involvement of some students of secondary schools in cultism.
"Items ranging from (a) membership forms with passport photographs (b) guns, axes, cutlasses and (c) the nominal roll with their signatures inscribed with blood, have been recovered from the affected cultists" it stated.
The schools affected include Hope Waddell Training Institution, Duke Town Secondary School, Government Secondary School, Awi West African Peoples Institute, WAPI, as well as Lutheran High School, Obot Idim.
Others include, Unical International School, Government Secondary School Anantigha, Uyo High School, Uyo (Akwa Ibom State) as well as Government Secondary School, Anpa.
Of the number (70) who have been expelled, 26 of them are secondary school students while 44 were thrown out from the Polytechnic, Calabar in a circular number TPC/REG/SM/17 dated August 9, 2002.
Those kicked out belonged to various departments, including Financial Studies, Mechanical Engineering, Estate Management, Business Administration, Electrical/Electronics Engineering, Architecture, Mass Communication, Accounting, while it was stated that some of the students were part timers.
Meanwhile, the State House of Assembly has passed the executive bill on cult practice into law, awaiting Governor Donald Duke's signature.
When ratified, those found guilty of cultism will go to prison for two years while their sponsors will be jailed for one year without an option of fine.
The bill is coming on the heels of the large scale killings which have taken place in the last 14 days in Calabar leading to the death of 10 students including the brother of a former chairman in one of the councils of the Southern senatorial districts of the state.

CALM has returned to Calabar, Cross River state, after 15 days of killings by cultists who invaded the city, allegedly from a first generation university in one of the southern states of the country.
In all, 11 students from the University of Calabar were hacked to death by the cultists who carried out their dastardly act in the daylight.
Curiously, it was learnt that, 10 of the 11 murdered students were final year students who had completed their degree examinations about one or two hours earlier in the day.
Those killed were either traced to their parents' houses, invited out and shot dead at the door step of such houses, or caught up in the traffic, or picked up while buying things in the market or sighted in the library and gunned down without qualms.
Stunned by the killings, the state government and state police command swung into action deploying police armoured cars, while uniformed and plain-clothed securitymen hit the city arresting some of the cultists while some beat a retreat and escaped from Calabar.
On its part, the state legislature hurriedly passed an executive bill outlawing secret cults, stipulating a two-year jail term for cultists without an option of fine while their sponsors will be sent behind bars for 12 calendar months without an option of fine as well as sending landlords who accommodate cultists to jail for two years.
While giving assent to the bill, Duke said principals of schools where cultism is prevalent will be booted out of the system while the union government of such schools will be dissolved and members expelled.
Duke also warned heads of tertiary institutions to put their acts together and flush out cultists or have themselves flushed out of work.

An undergraduate with the University of Jos, Mr. Emmanuel Godwin Tawe, and another person, simply referred to as Chuks (whose surname were shot dead early on Sunday morning by unknown gunmen suspected to be cult members.
The incident happened at an out-of-campus quarters for students on Bauchi Road, Jos.
Another student, a room mate of Tawe, Mr. Ahmed Ayede, a 200-level student of Political Science Department who suffered some gun shot wounds, is said to be receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital in the Plateau state capital.
THISDAY's investigations revealed that some cult gangs a clashed on Saturday October 12 during the "Queen of UNIJOS" competition and a number of students had suffered injuries.
A student source in the university said" "the rival cult groups fought over some girls leading to a free-for-fight all which we thought had ended there. Obviously, some people were still aggrieved and promised to deal decisively with the other party."
A student staying in the building where the incident occurred told THISDAY that about 10 fully armed men invaded the quarters and attacked men and other occupants in the room with him.
---Yawe, a suspected member of the Viking campus secret society, was said to have sustained gunshot wounds on the forehead and chest.
He died on the way to the hospital while Chuks was said to have given up in the early hours of Monday morning.
Plateau State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Innocent Ilozuoke, confirmed receiving the report but stated he received report of only one student viction.
He said the gunmen asked for money from the murdered student's room mates and snatched rings, wristwatches and necklaces.
"We believe it is the handiwork of cultists and if it's a cult clash issue, we have to exercise caution. It won't be easy but we're investigating."

Four suspected secret cult members said to be of the Neo African Movement (Black Axe Confraternity) in the University of Calabar were reportedly shot dead on Tuesday when police, acting on a tip-off, engaged the group in gun battle.
The suspected cultists were said to be engaged in a clash with another rival cult group in Calabar.
Briefing newsmen in Calabar, the Cross River State Police Command Commissioner, Mr Bashiru Azeez, confirmed the incident saying the suspected cultists when on a revenge mission over the murder of one of their members early this year.
He revealed that the cult members were cornered in their hide out where "blood stained cutlasses, canvass shoes, register containing the names and photographs of some of the members targetted for elimination" were recovered.
Azeez said the cult group drew their operational order, like the police, as they had their target, reason why they wanted to carry out their mission what the needed for the operation and what they had on ground.
The Police Commissioner said the aim of the cultists was to revenge their friend's death (Chaka de Zulu) who was assassinated on May 29, 2002 at his residence at 15, Eyo Ita Street, Calabar.
As contained in their operational order (guidelines), the target of the cultists was to eliminate those they called, Dansuki, Okwa, Selsa, Baba Ekpo, Orok Gregory, Orok Ekeng, Lemu, Manus, Ekpe Atai, Petaya, Obuma, M. C. Stone and Etiebet with stage two taking place at UNICAL and stage three at Calabar Polytechnic (POLYCAL).
The CP said the police were attracted by the shooting of the cult groups at their respective shrines and as such his (policemen) at Uwanse Street moved in to stem the situation.
"Why my men heard the gun shots, they moved immediately and engaged them in a gun battle. Two of them (cultists) were gunned down and a register was recovered from them," he said.
He explained that the police were still combing for the whereabouts of some of those people whose photographs and identity cards were in the register.

As a far-back member of the Neo Black Movement, It is disheartning to see the level of violence being perpetrated by the various groups. No confraternity has violence at the root of their foundation. The big 4 frats (Pyrates, Buccaneers, NBM & Eiye), have similar ideologies and set goals.
The general idea now is to Increase The Peace, The bigger confraternities have a duty to try and solve these problems. the over 50,000 members of The big 4 and other regional frats like the Maphites, Vikings, Black Berets and Mafia Fraternity, should work together.
Confraternies can achieve more economically, politically and socially if they have a common ground than fight each other. There is strength in number. Increase The Peace!! |

It cannot be over emphasized the need why the violent should stop in our university campuses and other tertiary institutions. There is no single year that goes by without there being death occasioned by cult rivalry or internal crises in cults in form of mutiny which usual leads to death. Most times parents are at a lose for words to adequately express their sorrow when they hear the news of the death of their sons or daughters who are members of confraternities of innocent students caught in the cross fire in the useless war of supremacy.
Confraternity, cultism, confra, levels, blending, fine boyism or whatever name it is now called, can be said to be a phenomena that has come to stay in our socio-educational system.
Confraternity itself does not depict evils such as hooliganism, killing, arson, raping and other social ills that are now the hallmarks of today’s confraternities in Nigeria citadels of higher learning.
Screaming newspaper headlines and actual realities of happenings in our universities does not fall short of ˜Mahem in Ibadon Poly as Axemen settles scores with Eiye™,™Carnage in Nsukka as Vikings and BurkinaFaso digs it out™, 19 fear dead in Okoh Poly as Two-Two and Pirates goes on rampage™, Mutiny in Buccaneer claims lives in Uniben™, ˜ Unilag on the broil as Eiye and Axemen slug it out for supremacy™ and so on .
The only positive development worthy of mentioning is the relative peace that has been holding in Edsu now AAU Ekpoma since 1999 after the massive renunciation that took place. This is not to say that cult activities has seized in AAU, but evidence are available to show that the school has not disrupted or closed down due to cult activities or rivalry since 1999. This is a great achievement for a university that was once listed by BBC as the 2nd most notorious university in the world when it comes to cult related violence. The peaceful environment in Ekpoma has facilitated the rapid development of fast foods joints, clubs and other recreational and relaxation establishments, which before 1999 would have been a fertile ground for sparking off agro.
It is high time graduated members of these confraternities as well as right minded and progressive thinking student members, to engage on a reorientation of their members. The aims and objects of setting up these confraternities should be scrutinized any anti social clause if found should be amended. Since one cannot create life, the importance of preserving life should be drilled into all members because whomever you kill has a father, mother, sister or brother like you. Killing is not a true test of manhood, but the ability of one to hold his own when it matters most that’s what makes a man. I make bold to say this because I have been there, done that, and I have got straps and I have got guns.
Instead of fighting for supremacy based on ‘ruggedity’, which can be measured in terms of viciousness and unwholesome activities, energies should be geared by all members towards academic supremacy. This can be measured in by regular attendance of lectures, engaging in intellectual debates, excellent scores in tests and exams, the number of graduating students with 2nd class upper, the numbers of social services carried out per year ie. AIDS awareness campaign, tutorials etc.
If the foregoing is used as indices for measuring supremacy, Nigeria universities would have been one of the world’s best and there is no reason why it should not be so.
Head of confraternities in universities should only be to final year students with impeccable character, good leadership qualities and above all an academic serious minded person. A Head with a lot at stake will thing twice before issuing out orders that will lead to bloodbaths.

WALTER SISULU passed on to glory on the 6th of march 2003 after aprotracted illness.his 91years on earth was soent in the struggle for the emacipation of the black race. this was subsequently responsiblrfor his incarseration for 26years in prison at Robin Island with Nalson Mandela and others.
Walter Sisulu fpught against oppresion of all kinds, he advocated against gender discrimination , freedom of speach,equal right etc.
he is regarded as one of the founding fathers of the African National Congress ANC & at different times he was the vice president & the sec. gen. of the ANC.he was the one who brought Mandela in to ANC.
his vision, ideals intedrity & belief in the the dignity of the black race earn his respect from leaders the world over, he was amongst the foremost pan-africanistwho brought & restored dignity to the black race.
he will be remembered for his steadfastness, slefless service to humanity, accomodation & tolerance.

As a son of the Family confraternity of nigeria aka Mafia, I believe the only way out of violence is by legalising the organisations. Schools here in yankee also have fraternities but cus they are legal and open, u can't just go commit atrocities as all ur members and leaders will be held accountable by the authorities. I also believe that orientation of new members is seriously flawed. During blending, intakes are told which confras to hate but never y. This just keeps the bad blood going long after it should have dried.
The Mafia confraternity is now all about economic and academic advancement of our members. We want to make that paper and that's all we want. We want to leave that image of "a cult boy" and step up to become businessmen of the campus. This is why we've faded out of the limelight of violence and conflict to just run our businesses and make our money. If other cults did the same and stopped the turf wars and hatred then violence on campus will become a thing of the past.

Mr Sankara. I beg to differ. Organisations have aims and objectives, its people who are not objective. People in the "know", know that the majority of “confra” people are not troublemakers. They might be boisterous, but not felons.
I won’t deny the fact that there are some truly evil people that parade themselves as cult boys, but in all honesty they are the exception rather than the rule. A well-established confraternity on a campus would have an average of between 80 to a 100 people at any one time. Out of this about 40-50% will probably never be identified as members. Another 20-30 will be identified by means of association. Only about 20% will actually satisfy that term “cult member” as we have all come to hate. This will be the idiots who steal, rape, rob, and God knows what else. The truth is that these are really the minority. But because they are the armed, vicious type their reputations seem to rub on everybody else.
I know people say these so called "cults" have no redeeming features, we have to realise that they are now a part of the society we live in. If people are expecting the like of Pyrates, Buccaneer, NBM and Eiye to simply disintegrate. They have been going for well over 20 years and in the case of the Pyrates, 50. They will become part and parcel of our Nigerian society. You now have democracy and with it you have these so called “cult” members occupying positions. A little fact to digest here. At least a fifth of the people voted into the lower echelons of power (House of Reps, state house etc) have confra affiliations. A little mental arithmetic will tell you that this figure will rise geometrically with each election.
My point here is not to ignore the carnage that happens on our campuses. I will be the first to raise my hand to say, that the ways our organisations operate on campuses are not viable and should be condemned. However, you always get this half measures by people who do not know the hows and wherefores of confra running their mouths.
There is no easy solution. We’ve had rustications, jailing, renunciations, and expulsion, burning etc none has really worked. By castigating people for their associations will only make the well-meaning members to take a backward posture and let the hooligans run loose, as it is obtained. This is really a case of tarring everybody with the same brush.
What is needed in order of relevance?
1. Get every group on campus to submit the names of their members to the authorities, and perform their activities openly.
2. Clamp down heavily on errant members, using the rule of law. Not the fire brigade methods used now.
3. Clamp down heavily on people who arm or fund the students.
4. Vigorously monitor the academic standards of matriculating students. these days even armed robbers get admissions
5. Improve conditions on the campuses i.e. street lighting and clearing bushes and providing recreational facilities |

To the last anonymous writer, I totally support your idea. If the confraternities all became legal, the bad eggs would have no cloak of anonymousity making it difficult for crazy vengeance schemes to materialize.
The mafia isn't a group of wanna be italians, its the Family Confraternity of Nigeria, formed in 1986 in OAU, Ife. It's major aim is to build a society whose members can fraternise, help and interact with one another while sharing common goals and objectives which include graduating from school on time and helping one another in the real world. This was no break away fraternity either. The founding father was never a member of any other fraternities so our ideology is original, not based on violence and no scores to settle.
We wholly emphasize the importance of facing ur education first and everything after. I believe that when people get too used to the university environment and start feeling like they own the place, that's when they begin to ferment trouble as everyone else appears to be a "small boy" to them. If fraternities made sure their members got out of school within the 4/5 yrs required, then this will allow even the bad uncontrollable eggs get out on time. I know that most members of this message board will agree with me that the most vicious and ruthless members of our fraternities are those that have been around for far too long.
Fraternity life in college is supposed to be only a mere 4 years of our entire life, if members are made to realise that life goes on after college then maybe they'll quit trying to have the most of it while in school as there's still going to be lots of fraternising after school too.

There is no room for some of the atrocities that are currently occuring.
Some say dialogue is the answer, but there is no talking to some people, some say discipline but that is what started the proliferation of confraternities. There is no simple solution but the answer is easy.

13 feared dead in Port Harcourt cults's clash

NO fewer than 13 persons were murdered in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital at the weekend when two rival gangs engaged in a bloody confrontation while trying to assert their supremacy.
The crisis was sparked off when some alleged members of one of the gangs, the Ku Klux Klan KKK attacked two members of the other faction, the Islandos. the two members of Islandos were said to be holding converstion with one of their friends who allegedly does not belong to the gang. when suddenly some KKK boys swooped on them and popened gun fire which killed their friend. The death of the youth prompted what turned out to be reprisal killings in Port Harcourt at the weekend.
Sources said the problem started at the Rivers State Polytechnic, Bori where the two gangs have been battling. Members of the two gangs who had attended the matriculation ceremony at the Polytechnic had a face-off which was carried over to the state capital. The Guardian was informed that one of the KKK boys had proceeded to Sangana Street in the Doibu area of Port Harcourt where the first casualty of the crisis was recorded.
In a bid to avenge the death of their friebd the two Islandos who were injured by the gun shot that killed were said to have sought the support of the other members and proceeded on a killing spree. By Sunday. over 11 members of the KKK group had been killed within the Diobu area of Port Harcourt, a part of the city notorious for gang activities.
The KKK gang was alleged to have taken the fight to the Rumuomasi area, having lost grip of the Diobu axis of the city. Their struggle for supremacy, according to sources, could be traced to the sudden emergence of KKK boys in Diobu where they had come to settle after deserting the town axis of Port Harcourt where the Islandos were said to be in firm control. An attempt by the KKK gangs to assert themselves had led to the confrontation that came to the fore in Bori at the weekend.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs. Ireja Barasua, an Assistant Superintendent of Police ASP) told The Guardian that the police was already investigating the matter in order to unravel the identity of the boys.
According to her, a faction of the gangs had used buses with government number plate to perpetuate their acts.
" Some boys disguised themselves using buses with government number plate to harassing and killing people. We are investigating the case to unravel the identity of these gangs. The boys have killed some people and we are looking for them," she said.
She said the Diobu Division of the Police Force had notified the state police command which was still waiting for their findings.
Barasua explained that there has been spate of cult-related violence in Port Parcourt in recent times and the police have stepped-up security in Diobu. |

Maphites are a break away confraternity which broke away from the family confraternity of Nigeria aka Mafia in the early 90s. They are quite popular in schools in the eastern part of nigeria but relatively unknown in the west and north. Some schools with strong maphite membership are UNN, Ekpoma, Uniport amongst others. They still share lots of tradition with the Mafia.
Maphite means Maf man, same way back home u'd say someone in unilag is an akokite.
The don't have any websites yet.
They wear green or camo for hits.

A student of the Yaba College of Technology (Yabatech) was killed yesterday in Lagos following a violent clash between Yabatech students and those of University of Calabar.
Consequently, the institution was shut down by the authorities of Yabatech to prevent further escalation of violence.
Although the identity of the deceased was not immediately known, it was gathered that his body had been deposited at the Lagos Island mortuary while those injured are receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.
A security personnel attached to the gate leading to the school, who refused to disclose his name, alleged that the clash was as a result of revenge mission by students of the University of Calabar.
According to him, the military cadet corps of Yabatech some time last month had beaten a student of University of Calabar to death during a fight in Lagos.
Although the management of Yabatech pleaded and got the understanding of the parents of the slain Unical student, the students of the university later came on a revenge mission.
The security personnel said that the Unical students believed to be members of a cult group, numbering up to 10, stormed the college with arms and unleashed terror on the institution, leading to the death of a student while several others were injured.
The Public Relations Officer of Yabatech, Mr. Charles Oni, when contacted on telephone, confirmed the incident but refused to comment further.
At the college everybody had deserted the school premises except security personnel manning some strategic positions.
It was gathered that fear of reprisal attack by Unical student following the killing of their student was responsible for the delay in allocating halls of residence to students of the college.
Management of Yabatech, it was gathered had expected the attack and considered not allocating the hostel till the incident was resolved. |

I used to fly in Baobab before I left for the U.S.,in the U.S. there are legalised fraternities and competition exist amongst them all. Looking at the bigger picture, these fraternities encourage academic eexcellence and control both the economic, political and social life of the American society.
We need to do same back in Nigeria. I just graduated from an American university and I know what I am talking about.
Being in Eiye fraternity moulded me for my future career in the U.S. military cos I am a Marine.

Authorities of the Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro, Ogun State have ordered the immediate closure of the institution following bloody clashes between members of two rival cults.
... According to statement issued by the polytechnic authorities, the closure would last for three weeks until normalcy is restored into the institution.
The last attack by the student cultists was the second of such in the last four weeks, as one occurred precisely on May 7 between "Eye" and "Buccaneer" cults. In a renewed hostility on Thursday, bloody clashes between the two rival cultists allegedly caused a students' death while three fingers of another student were chopped off.
Following the activities of the cult members, which was not restricted to the polytechnic campus alone residents of the sleepy community now live in fear.
Sources told THISDAY that the cultists did not stop at attacking one another alone, as they have equally embarked on attacking other innocent students as well as embarking on indiscriminate looting of people's properties.
According to an eye witness account, a management law lecturer also had his car badly damaged following his alleged involvement in cult activities within the campus.
Though the immediate cause of the renewed hostility was not known at press time, it was gathered that it might be connected with the supremacy tussle that had existed between the two rival cultists for a long time.

To my fellow board members.
I quite like the posting from the last two anonymous posts. The aim of my info's are to demystify confra's, provide information and allow people to challenge the info.
I have gathered the info's from a variety of sources. The info's given are at least 75% correct. the estimated membership is necessarily an approximation given some conditions including
1. year of formation
2. geographical spread i.e uni's, polys etc
3. membership criteria
from this I concluded that the largest is NBM aka Black Axe. membership should be in the 30,000 region and its spread all over intituitions in Nigeria. second is Eiye, although they have a mass entry kind of policy, they are largely confined to the western schools. buccaneers should be third. this is only because they have been in a state of inertia as per schools for about 5 years of more. In this case inertia does not mean they have pulled out of schools just number and people containment.
This is the same reasons why Pyrates would come in at number 4 they have never been into mass choirs though they seemed to lapse in the mid 80's. Vikings would 5th and would overtake the Pyrates before long. Mafia would be 6th, then Black berets, Maphites, KKk, Jurists, Burkina Faso, Trojan Horse etc in that order.
With all due respect to what I call the smaller frats, information is a bit sparse, i will produce the best I can in due course

EQUALITY; HOW REALISTIC?
Sameness in the level of opportunity, choices, privileges, chances, freedom, association, standard and rules easily sums up what equality stands for. Equality of the human race is what has been achieved only on the paper and a lot is left to be desired in reality.
The United Nations (UN) chatter advocates the equality of man, in terms of race, gender, nationality etc. It advocates against discrimination of the physically handicap and disables as well as refugees. Now then, with all these, why de we still have high rate of inequality amongst races, how come some races claim superiority (directly or indirectly) over others and why are there double standards in the dealings when it comes to minority races e.g Blacks.
Xenophobia, racial profiting, extra-judicial killings and racial prejudice are the worst form of injustices to minorities. Xenophobia which is an unreasonable fear or hatred of foreigners or strangers usually breeds the aforementioned racial injustices. In Australia, the native Aborigines has been in the receiving end of the ills of racism and so also the Red Indians of the United State. The story would have still been the same in South Africa if not for the steadfastness of some prominent Africans who had to put their lives on the line to see that the wicked apartheid regime came to an end.
Those who claim to be the world greatest proponents of equality are those who abuse human right most. The U.S claims the status of equality of all races and we see what happens to our black brothers over there. The manhandling of Rodny King by police men led to the now famous L.A riot; what about Amadilo Dialo a Ghanian immigrant whose crime was him pulling out his wallet to show his identification and for that he had to be shot forty-one (41) times by the police who allege that they thought he was pulling out a gun!
In the “great” Britain, a young Yoruba boy was killed the other day by suspected ‘whites’ boys but till date nothing significant has been done to see the culprits are brought to book. And on and on the stories goes.
Equality as I understand it is “what is good for Bunnyface is also good for Bunny- yanch” i.e what is good, for the goose is good for the gander. In the world over, every leader of the so called developed world claim equality in their polices but only the minorities know how true this is. The blacks no matter how hard they try, no matter their contributions to their adopted foreign homes they are always regarded as second class citizens. While when they came over her in Africa, our sycophant and mediocre leaders do not hesitates to roll out the red carpets for them, bootlicking and we expect them to treat us as like equals?
Robert Mugabe and Qadafi are among the few African leaders that has stood up to insolence of the so call civilized world, though it must be stated that Mugabe is going about the land redistribution in Zimbabwe the wrong way. In the United States, how possible is it for there to be a black American president? when the official residential conspicuously called Whit House?; how soon will racial profiling (discriminatory stop and search harassment) being suffered by blacks stop in the US
This is where Neo-Black Movement (NBM) and other well meaning Africans has their job cut out for them. NBM is a pan-African and pro-African organisation which from inception has as its primary objectives as fighting against oppression of the black race as well as restoration of dignity to blacks all over the world. This should be taken as a wake up call to all members of NBM and all other pan-African organizations to put our acts together to orientate blacks in diaspora. Especially those who has lost pride in being black, those whose psyche has been abused to the extent that they see nothing wrong in playing second fiddle and those who are aware of this oppressive racial discrimination but are looking for guidance out of the maze of injustice!
Violent revolution is no longer fashionable, hence it is imperative that we seek to address any perceive wrong in a legal and most peaceful way. It is incumbent upon NBM to categorically denounce openly all forms of oppressive, depressive and suppressive policies against blacks by any government because gone are the days when they say that blacks are not significant enough to determine which way the political pendulum swings.
I am tired to see mother Africa being described as a joke of a continent, which nothing good can come out of Africa. Tired of hearing that anything black is not good or depicts something negative like black market, black sheep, black blood, black plague, blackmail etc. By the way who told them that they are white? They are more “pink” than white! Only the angles of God are white. Let the struggle continue until victory is certain!

Fraternal greetings to you all! I am happy to tell you all that the fracas between S.E.C & B.A.N have been resolved in a peace talk yesterday with the students union government. They have said they will still hold another one within theirselves off campus, so that they can really talk and resolve issues.It is now left for the members of N.B.M to talk to their boys to try and resolve their internal differences, so that peace will reign in that school like it has always been. All "axemen" that have link with boys of that "T" should please step in and talk to them.Violence never settles anything. |

To the person who say there will never be peace, time will tell if you think that violence is the answer to all of this, continue, and one day you will reap the rewards of violence. I know it is either you are young in the confraternity which you belong or you have just refused to grow, and you do not think of the future of those that are still in the struggle. From the inception of confraternities it was never intended to fight nor kill fellow students, but that is what we are facing now, it is supposed to stand up for students not against them. We are all men of the rainbow colour, we should take ourselves like that. I belive that once you have actually gone through drills, and survived it to become what ever you are, then you should be respected as a man! But for those who don't have the guts to do so we should know that they are weak and protect them from oppression and not oppress them. I was once like you anyway, I belived that if you are my brother, then you are my enemy and I was ready to do away with you but now, maturity has set in and I now see life from another perspective. All I want to say is "VIOLENCE DOESN'T PAY" |

Mr no peace, you will be very lucky to leave campus a graduate and even luckier to leave campus alive! No threat intended but just advice to say wake up to your plight. Those who live by the gun/knife/weapon usually die by it. There are more in the confraternities who want peace than war and unfortunately the war mongers normally end up victims of their own war. The bigger tragedy is that innocents suffer too. My friend read ya book cos that is what you went to Uni to do. Graduate .. if you can and be an asset to your family, society, your confraternity and the black race. Dont waste your self.

Obviously you do not know what it entails to live peacefully, you want to be unique, you say that Black is not in the rainbow, what colour do maphites use, or mafia family, or the bell family, or all thses other frats, yet they accept to be under that unmbrella which you just refused. If asked you will have the effrontry to tell me that you are fighting for the black race when in actual fact not once have you shot anybody that is not black! How do you fight for the people that you kill or fight?
