First of all hello again everyone since I don't come on Fact Net very often. I was just wondering for the people who left do you often find yourself at a loss of words when you tell people about your NTCC experience and then they look at you with that look and before they even ask you know what they are thinking which is "how did you ever get involved in that" or "why". When they ask why I got involved, or why, I just kind of shrug and am not really sure how to explain it, because now I see the obvious that NTCC is a psycho nut case cult, and wonder how on earth I ever got involved in that Twilight Zone episode. Anyone else find themselves at a loss for words when trying to explain it to others?

I have a problem when certain members of NTCC ask why, because most of the time the concern is less than genuine.

Oh I kind of meant when people who have never heard of NTCC ask "so how did you get involved in that" while giving you the look (I thought you were smart) lol

People who are unfamiliar with mind control don't understand it, even though it's a common phenomenon. There really is no way to explain just how it works to someone who hasn't experienced it. Most 'normal' folks have no conception of the kinds of pressure that were brought to bear upon us, and the atmosphere that was carefully crafted to control our behavior and manipulate our thinking. But I have met people who have escaped from similar abusive groups, and they instantly relate to it.

I like to perform the following...

Me: "Well, let's say I am holding three items in my hand: a carmel cube, a butterscotch candy, and an almond rocca. I am holding my hand out to you with these items staring you in the face. What is your favorite candy?"

Inquirer: "Ummm...I'll take the butterscotch."

Me: "Now please notice the difference between the hypothetical contents of my hand and the actual question. Had I asked the question without the items in my hand, you would conclude that I want you to tell me your favorite candy and you would have said 'Three Musketeers (or something)', and yet you are telling me by your choice that butterscotch is your favorite."

Inquirer: "Ah, I see...actually, I don't see."

Me: "Well, I've forced you to make a choice that I have limited to three possibilities. You could have rejected all three and said 'Three Musketeers' instead."

Inquirer: "So you practically made my choice for me by tricking me into thinking my choices were limited to the ones you had available to you."

Me: "Yes, something like that. Now imagine the pastor of a church asks you about your future. 'Have you thought about the ministry, or about going to Bible College? Do you sometimes think you would like to? Do you ever have the desire to preach? Who do you think put that desire in your heart? Was it the devil, or was it God? It wasn't the devil was it (laughs), I mean, really...'"

Inquirer: "He limits the options and makes one of them seem ridiculous."

Me: "Perfectly so."

Inquirer: "And they get intelligent people to fall for that?"

Me: "I got you to pick the butterscotch, didn't I?"

That's been my experience, too. There are lots of them out there: NTCC is by no means unique.

If someone hasn't lived through it, no explanation is possible. If they have, no explanation is necessary.

Anytime I have met someone from a "normal" church and have tried to explain what we went through, they always react with shock and revulsion that a "Christian" church would treat it's ministers so bad. When I try to tell them why I stayed in NTCC for so long, I lamely try to explain-- but inside I feel stupid, like someone who fell for a scam. However, I have been surprised by how many other people I have met who also came from abusive churches. Interestingly, they have all been strict, fundamentalist Christian churches.
