I recently visited a Mormon church next to my new neighborhood, because I was looking for a place to go to church, and I started with the one closest by which they invited me to. I believe in giving everyone a fair hearing, as the Bible says, by two or three witnesses. So I went at least twice. At the outset, I asked the Mormon inviters if their ministers preach Jesus and the cross. They assured me they did. I asked again pointedly if they do so consistently, or rarely. They said, "All the time..." So, it seemd good to go, so I did. This is what I found: 1) Nice people. 2) Successful people. 3) Plenty of families. 4) No overt efforts to get you in by 'killing you with niceness'. 5) No ushers to usher you where they want you to go. 6) No effort by inviters to sit beside you and 'pray you through'. So far as an assembly goes, it was free and open. However, now the errors: 1) The minister preached some good exhortations and commandments on Christian living, but NO MENTION at all of Jesus by name, nor His cross. (There were plenty of 'God' and 'the Lord' spread around) 2) They quote their book right along with The Bible and hold their writings to be equal to The Scriptures in authority, which is contrary to (Rev 22:18) (Their own book declares it to be 'Another Gospel of Jesus Christ', which plainly contradicts (Gal 1:6-9)) 3) They not only do not speak of the cross, but they actually AVOID the blood of Jesus as the Lamb of God. This was even to the point of taking their communion (in every service) with water, rather than wine nor grapejuice, as if to avoid even the color RED! 4) They liken their physical tabernacles to the very places of God's safe-haven in this world. They make no reference to our being the spiritual house of God and having our safe haven and anchor in Christ Jesus. So, by these visits I found they were good, nice, succeful, family-oriented religious folks who are following the corrupted faith of a false bible without salvation in the blood of Jesus, and no abiding spiritual birth into the body of Christ, but rather heavily dependent on assembly buildings akin to the error of temple worship. I was a loyal member and 'up & coming' minister in a church organization that gave lip-service to the true Scriptures and worship of Jesus, while practising a very deep and destructive form of personal cultism. I would be more safe as a Christian in a Mormon church (so long as I understood their errors)than I would in the 'Christian' church I was with before. The modern-day Mormons are doctrinally cultish in the above areas, but I believe are much less of a practical danger to believers and their families. In my opinion, if they trusted in Jesus' blood for forgiveness of sins, looked to His Headship over His spiritual body, and let Joseph Smith be a 'respected' commentator rather than Apostolic prophet, the Mormons would be a very decent and productive Christian group. But, even as they are, I would have no problem voting for Romny, if he were the conservative choice in the upcoming election. |

In my opinion, if they trusted in Jesus' blood for forgiveness of sins, looked to His Headship over His spiritual body, and let Joseph Smith be a 'respected' commentator rather than Apostolic prophet, the Mormons would be a very decent and productive Christian group. Yet the reality is that they are doctrinally seperated from the body of Christ and are not a Christian group no matter who says they are. There could well be Christians who are mormons though, and I fully agree they can be a decent and productive group. My mormon friends have been people of good integrity and nice people. I think Romney should downplay his Mormon faith, rather than bring it to the forefront as the many theological differences you have outlined will also come up in theory, which will hurt his standing amongst Christian voters. Personally, the more I hear him and watch how he responds to his critics, the less confident I am in him as a nominee. Good looks and a clean image will take you so far, but this is one year where substance will win out in the end. I would semi-reluctantly be ok with voting for him versus Hillary. But then again, I would be semi reluctant in voting for anyone else except Hillary. His mormon faith is a definite negative factor to me, but I trust that in the majority of situations it would prove to be a plus, rather than a minus from a conservative viewpoint. I know this isn't a real current post, but I've been pondering a bit about the Mormon's and what they teach as I've watched the debates and interviews and such with Romney, a real contender. |

I think the great fear is the potential embarrassment of the inaugural parade with the presidential ten-speed. Jonesee |

I'm voting for someone "competent" after Bush and I really don't care what his or her religious beliefs are. Nowadays, they ALL claim to be "Christian" and I feel bad for the Jews, atheists, and agnostics after Mittens speech today. (BTW, his name is Mittens--he was named after the family cat.) Mittens pretty much said that "This is a Christian nation, I am a Christian, so I am qualified to get your vote." Of course, if you believe God physically came down to earth to impregnate Mary, Jesus probably married to have "spirit children," the Garden of Eden was in Missouri, Jesus preached in India, and Joseph Smith had God-inspired revelations to add to the Bible...well then, I guess Mittens and his beliefs are Christian. I think it's fine that Huckabee wants to be the "Christian" candidate as his ads state. But that can backfire pretty fast. Whenever you mix Jesus with politics, you get politics. I'm also looking for how the candidates behave under pressure. When Larry Craig had his "bathroom" problems, Mittens IMMEDIATELY scrubbed Craig from the Mitten's webpage, even going so far as to remove Craig's name from already posted press releases. I thought that was pretty harsh and uncalled for. My ideal candidate is Joe Biden, then Huckabee, Mittens, John Edwards and Hillary. NEVER Rudy (I live in NYC), NEVER Insane McCain. Barrack has made zero impression on me. Someone who knows what he or she is doing, won't lie (too much) and will be competent. Like her or not, even the Reps admit Hillary has done a good job in NYC. But I think Bush-Clinton-Bush-Clinton is too too much! Republicans fear God. Democrats fear God and love God! |
