I'm starting this new thread for folks who were part of the CoJ satellite community at Parkminster in Rochester, NY. In the late 70s and early 80s, under Rev. Showalter, much of the church was tied in with the CoJ. Parkminster CoJ members practiced some modified forms of communal living, light sessions, and other CoJ practices. They also frequently visited the community in Orleans for retreats or longer stays. Carol Showalter, Rev. Showalter's wife, started 3D (Diet, Discipline, and Decipleship -- the world's first Christian diet group, heavily influenced by CoJ) at Parkminster during this time. In 1985 Rev. Showalter and his family moved to Orleans to become resident members of the CoJ. From reading posts on this board this seems to be part of a general trend of gathering in of the inner circle that Cay and Judy did during this era. If you are from Rochester or spent time there, please post here to let us know about you. (You can read my story on the "My Story" thread.) My motivation for this is that I moved away from Rochester in high school and am no longer in contact with anyone from there, and I'm trying to make sense of my childhood. |

Just to point out the connection between Parkminster, the Community of Jesus and Grenville Christian College... 1. June, 1980 - Diet, Discipline & Discipleship/Showalters sold a group of 4 lots that they owned at the CoJ to Grenville Christian College for $10. 2. 1988 - CoJ gave Grenville Christian College a piece of land within the Community of Jesus in exchange for Grenville Christian College giving the CoJ two of the lots they had been given by the Showalters/3D. 3. October, 1995 - Grenville Christian College gave the other 2 lots they got from the Showalters/3D to the CoJ in exchange for the CoJ giving Grenville Christian College a different lot. Other than the original $10, no money was paid for these properties. They were simply land exchanges. |

I also would be interested in catching up with all who were affiliated with Parkminster. Our family was part of the "Rochester community" for 20 years and I was part of the group that lived through the "no jeans, short hair, no girl/boy friend, light group" era. Had a brother that attended GCC and many close friends who were shipped off to the school also. Tough times for all and unfortunately there is a generation that has significant wounds as a result of unhealthy leadership. The postings on this site have started a healing process that is much needed in my life. (posted this yesterday in other thread) |

Hi SJAA2007: I am from the Rochester faction. Worked in the 3D office, had to put up with the Showalters, saw the church divide from contention over CoJ involvement. Sending you a big hello and welcome! BonnieB: Sounds like tax evasion to me. Big donations usually mean big write-offs. Maybe someone can investigate that. |

Hi to both of you! sjaa2007 -- I bought my first pair of jeans (they were turquoise, so not technically blue jeans) with babysitting money when I was in 8th grade. Boy did I feel like a rebel! They were one of my first pairs of pants, before then I'd always had to wear skirts or dresses, even to gym class. :P Papillon -- How are you doing this land research? I used to do "follow the money" for a nonprofit that worked with banks, so I'd love to try this, but don't know where to start. Glad to meet both of you! |

Hi My wife and I were members of Parkminster from 75-82. We were part of light groups, attended a few choir retreats at the Community, were live-ins down there for a week, and part of the live-in program at Parkminister in 77 and again in 81. We eventually left the church over the Community while in seminary in 1982. It was not a happy parting. Since that time ther was a reconciliation, and I attended several clergy retreats at the Community . The Toronto Globe and Mail article about the Community that I cam across was a real jolt. While coming across the thread about Grenville and the Community I saw this thread, so I thought I'd write a few lines and say hello. |
