EIYE CONFRATERNITY CALL FOR THE REGISTRATION OF CONFRATERNITIES IN NIGERIAN HIGHER INSTITUTIONS. What you sow is what you reap. Do we not realise this fact? It appears we are trying to redefine the rudimentary law of nature. The successive Nigeria governments have undeniably shown total disregard to the law. Consequently, the society in general seems not to have any understanding of the Law. The accepted legal norm now is primitive law and jungle justice. Ordinarily, law is the dictate of the ruler. In a democratic society it is the aggregate of the opinion of the people in any given society. To date, it is right to say that the Nigerian law is the dictate of practical reasons of the past military rulers. The practical reasons of the military have been shown to be intellectually deficient in all ramifications and propelled by corruption. Hence, our law is deficient and propelled by corruption. We complain about the activities of some members of confraternities in our higher institutions but we fail to attempt to consider the causes of the problems. We have failed to understand that the causation is integrally linked to the eventual. The failure to understand this basic order of nature is the bane of our inability to provide a realistic solution to the problems. At this juncture, we believe it would be a disservice to our fatherland if we do not assist in the debate to provide a realistic solution to this imaginary insurmountable problem. It is with this moral obligation in mind, that we opted to talk and enjoin you to at least suspend your fantastical misconceptions about us and open your mind. We agree that the activities of some members of the confraternities in our higher institutions are damnable. We agree that we cannot continue to tolerate these acts. However, we should not get carried away. Calling for total eradication of confraternities on our campuses is now gaining a wicked and unjustifiable momentum. In order to actualise their objectives they proceeded to give an Eiye a bad name. They now refer to confraternities as cults. They obviously lost the plot from the outset by confusing cultism with the activities of confraternities. We assume that those who refer to confraternities as cults are not malicious. Thus, we now propose to partly lift the veil of ignorance. What is cultism in the Nigerian context? It involves a ritualistic system of worship. It would usually have a religious undertone. You do not know whether these confraternities are involved in rituals. Taken this, they simply jumped into conclusion and called for the eradication of confraternities from the higher institutions. They want to throw the baby out with the bath water. Eiye confraternity believes that it is unpractical and definitely impossible to eradicate confraternities from the campuses. In the premises, rather than folding our hands whilst the impossible is contemplated we now suggest that the only reasonable and realistic manner of addressing the perceived problems is to formally register the deserving confraternities, such as The Supreme EIYE CONFRATERNITY". It is high time we examined our conscience and address the injustice, unequal treatment and diabolical double standards in the society. What moral right or justification have we got to demand the expulsion of students because of their membership of confraternities? How can we justify their expulsion on the basis of mere membership and unsubstantiated allegations? Is it justifiable to have the concentration of pseudo legislative powers, investigative powers, and the adjudicative powers in a single body where students are concerned? Why should their studies be truncated when an appeal is pending? Are we not ashamed to rusticate these students whilst known murderers like the notorious sergeant Rogers and others remain untouchable. (though they have been arrested watch out for the outcome). Remember the case of the unknown soldier, when thousands of soldiers attacked a civilian and his household, looted, raped and had a non-stop picnic then burnt down the house. This is a very good case of gross irresponsibility with all impunity, no one took responsibility for this atrocity. To crown it all, the supposed responsible judiciary discarded the word responsibility from its dictionary and did not find the culprits responsible for this act of barbarism even in the face of all evidence gathered. We believe and know that irresponsibility was the watchword in those dark days. Should we continue to wallow in such filth? We need a constitution of the people and by the people. We need to dispense with the dictate of the military. We need to understand the law, appreciate the law, embrace the law, accommodate the law and act in accordance with the law. Which law? Definitely, we do not mean the generally present day primitive law. We mean a fresh legal norm dictated by real and uncorrupted democracy. In this regard, we believe registration of confraternities would amount to an inalienable right of association. We demand practical moral courage from the government and the society in general. We reiterate that any attempt or move to seek the demise of confraternities in the higher institution is a defeatist agenda. EIYE CONFRATERNITY. Greetings in the name of the Supreme Being. We have tried to stay away fromthe controversy Surrounding the legalities or perceived illegalities of confraternities, but there is a time to laugh a time to cry a time to fly and a time to perch. This is the proverbial time to act. It is not always right that silence means consent. There are occasions when it is dignifying to keep mute even when blasphemous innuendoes and flagrant false accusations are made against you. However, the time has come for us to enlighten the ignorant and set the records straight. The Supreme Eiye confraternity is a brotherhood consisting of well educated, responsible and law abiding citizens. We are specially regarded, even by other Confraternities. We have special relationships with most communities where we are located. This has contributed to our continued perception both, as an enigma. as well as the false and adverse assumption that we are responsible for most negative acts on campuses. It has now reached a crescendo where it is impossible for us to maintain the dignified silence that we have kept for decades. It is not in our character to defend ourselves against subtle attack by the feeble-minded. But we have decided to endeavour, although unwillingly, to cure the ignorant from their disease to certain extent. In order to do this at this stage, we propose to correct their perception of our goals and objectives. In as much as it is impossible for us to wholly reveal our character, we propose to remove the thorn from the eyes of the ignorant. In doing this, we say that contrary to their perception, we are an association of men whose principal objective is to trust, support, assist and rely on one another. We understand that members of other fraternities had on several occasions carried out reckless and damnable acts against the innocent masquerading themselves as members of Eiye in the knowledge that we never publicly disclaimed accusations or falsehood made against us. It has also come to our knowledge that it is not usual for vagabonds and even secondary school pupils to parade themselves as members of Eiye. These groups of individuals have carried out acts, which are reckless and baseless. It is noteworthy that such acts are not and cannot be associated with Eiye confraternity. We nevertheless state that their activities can not be divorced from the moral degeneration in our society and it therefore a reflection of the entire society. The society should now look upon itself and decide what it requires from it youths. The youths learn by examples and corrupt parents will bear corrupt children. It is important to note that not all those who now criticise the vagabonds, which we condemn, can wholly raise their fingers and come out to tell us that they have not participated in the denigration of our great country. They looted the country in all phases and killed innocent citizens who threaten the continuation of the vicious circle. It is this group of people that have produced the vagabonds. The most important problem that has to be resolved is a straightforward legal one. How can the problem of violent confrontations on our campuses be addressed? This lies in the hands of the law enforcement agencies. A professional/well equipped corruption-free police force will not have a problem identifying and neutralising unsuitable elements within our student communities. The only reason why this has not happened is because of the irrational blanket ban imposed on confraternities on campuses. This very unintelligent act, led to the problem of not knowing whom to hold responsible for what. The lack of foresight, gross indiscipline and reckless use of power, taken by force or fraudulent means are some of the reasons for this fiasco. Once upon a time when all confraternities were permitted to register on campuses, this sort of present day acts of barbarism were never committed. Since being driven underground all vagabonds have been out to have a picnic. Over the passage of time the stereotypical name "campus cult" became more popular than confraternity, which is what this organisations were conceived as. This is rather unfortunate as we have provided some of the best and most accomplished minds in Nigeria. Another negative impression that has to be corrected, is the assumption that "all confraternities are supported by political, or military elements for their own means." This is simply a fabrication of the highest order. The Supreme Eiye confraternity is a non-political organisation, and will not in any event assume a political motive. We propose to do our best to make Nigeria a just country. We propose that we reintroduce and rediscover law and order in Nigeria. We propose that we allow the police and the judiciary to investigate and adjudge over the culprits who are found responsible for the dastardly act committed on our campuses in recent years. We oppose any form of witch hunting and indiscriminate rustication of students. Many a time, students are rusticated on the basis of unsubstantiated wicked and false allegations. In most cases, the culprits are left untouched to continue with their acts while the innocents are punished by way of rustication or expulsion.We therefore call for the police to investigate relevant cases and for the judiciary to decide how to punish the guilty within the realm of the law of the country. It is hereby decided by the Supreme and universal Eiye confraternity to suspend forthwith all activities on Nigerian campuses until further notice. Any individual or group of individuals parading themselves as Eiyes on campuses as from this day, 9/8/99 are impostors and should be dealt with as such. A word is enough for the wise. [1] ignorant ,frustration ,and juvenile delinquency added with the bad government which have jeopardized the faith of every Nigeria youth.I Think we should put eye more on this area. Is time Nigeria confraternities will be reform, There should be a specific age for men to belong to confra.I ve come across different men from different cofra. Many Today regrets their act ,due to it was out of juvenile and Ignorant. Now they have grown of age the miss take has been done and is hard to correct because there is no replay in real life. The government cry out their crocodile tears every day, while they are the struck that breaks the camels back. How many student died on election campaign ?Many politicians contributes a lot on confra wars .Klan’s man you called them the upper powers ,that you have to hide to fight them. No! That country belongs to each and every one of us, Beside most of the people on the government now messing the country up don’t even no what people ,like Zik, Awo and Abubakar saw before the name Nigeria was approved {Independent} .Now they have turn it to a war zone ,where the common man can not even see food to eat nor water to drink. My brother, remember that Martin Luther King, Malcolm X, Steve Biko and Nelson Mandela, most of these men died that we may have our right, That we may live as one .why should we stay and watch politicians and ex-Army men loot, and destroy our country.
