GCC Answering Abuse Allegations
By Michael Jiggins (Staff Writer Recorder and Times)

Board Chairman apologizes to all victime; talks planned in reponse to Globe and Mail stories

The chairman of the GCC board of directors offered a personal apology Wednesday to any former student who suffered abuse while attending the private Christian boarding school.

"From a personal point of view, obviously I apologize for the fact that any student at the school - regardless of when they were there - suffered any kind of abuse", said Geoff Jackson in a telephone interview Wednesday afternoon.

He said the board members are holdong a conference call tomorrow night in part to discuss a response to allegations of physical and psychological abuse that have come to light in the past week.

Jackson who lives in Waterloo, said the board will discuss a formal apology and even the possibility of financial settlements with former students..

In a series of articles since last Friday, The GLobe and Mail has recounted what it initially headlined the school's "dark past."

Interviews with student's describe strange, almost cult-like activities by staff members in the 1970's and 1980's - incidents they say not only terrorized some students at the time, but have left them emotionally and psychologically scarred today.

Among the behaviour described in the Globe articles are so-called "light - sessions" where students would be roused from sleep and taken to a room where a bright light was shined in their faces as unseen people accused them of being sinners.

Many of the accounts are writtne about in postings to an internte chatroom, although no former students have come forward to the Recorder and Times alleging abuse.

Jackson said he was stunned to read those "very disturbing accounts in the Globe."

Well holy !!!!! It's about time. I guess they are feeling the heat, and thought it best to say something. I'm surprised a lawyer is not speaking for the Board of Directors-this can be agood thing though for the survivors.

"This came out of the blue last Friday," he said. "That really has taken us bu surprise and, yes, blindsided is the right word."

While the details were " a great shock to the existing board of directors," Jackson said he has no reason to doubt the veracity of what some former GCC students are alleging happened to them.

"I 'don't for one minute imagine that these former students are saying things that they don't belive happened. I'm sure that's the true," he said.

Amidst the firestorm of controversy, Jackson said the board id rager to hear from former staff members who were at GCC at the time students allege this behaviour was happening.

" We need to find out from them what their story is," said Jackson, cautioning there are " at least two points" to every issue.

Asked how it's possible that none of the current board would have been aware of the allegations, Jackson responded, "These events were taking place totally unknown to other student's who were there. If it was unknown to them, obviously it would be unknown to a vast majority of people."

He noted some board members went to GCC with those former students quoted in the Globe articles and "its a real shock to them."

Grenville Christian College, located on a lush campus along the shores of the St.Lawrence River east of Brockville, announced at the end of July that iw was closing its doors after 38 years.

Officials, including Jackson and headmaster Rev. Gordon Mintz, said at the time the closure was the result of dwindling enrolment and a financial situation that left the board doubtful GCC could survive another year.

The Globe's initial artilce, however, suggested the school's closure was, in fact, connected to the allegations of mistreatment of former students.

JAckson was adamant that was not the case.

" I can say quite categorically that that was never a consideration, never an issue," he said Wednesday.

Board chairman for the past four years and treasurer prior to that, Jackson said that his association with the school dates back about 9 years.

" I cannot believe that anything like this was happening during that period of time," said Jackson.

He said that the only whiff of alleging mistreatment allegations was about a year ago when the sister of a former student contacted the school and said that her sister "had suffered psychological damage" from her time at GCC.

"We have a set of protocols, of course, and wrote back and said if you could please provide us with the details we obviously will .... follow up on that," said Jackson.

"And we never heard any more..."

Mintz, who said he is no longer a GCC employee as of August 31, declined to comment yesterday referring a call instead to Jackson.

On the subject of possible lawsuits, Jackson said it would be "foolish" for the board not to worry legal action might be the next step for those former students who have come forward with their stories.

"But I'd say we're more concerned about the fact that we have these former students who obviously feel the way they do," stressed JAckson.

" One of the things that I will be bringing to the board (tonight) is that we surely have a pastoral responsibility to those people, regardless of when they were students and regardless of the fact the current board was not in place when these alleged situations occured."

Whew! Done... smile

Sorry for any typing errors... I was just very excited...

What do you all think? Personally... I am delighted at Geoff's stance...ie not discounting us... I would love to see an apology from someone that abused us.... Public or private...

Time to come out I guess if I am seeking that... ( and no "IF"s in that apology please... smile)

not so fast... I just got this off of facebook... ... someone there posted that ....
the globe reporter "just spoke to Geoff Jackson, Chairman of the Grenville board. Jackson said the story in theBrockville paper is all false and they have not issued an apology and they have no plans to make a finantial settlement. He did confirm that the board is meeting this evening. "

I guess that was too good to be true...
