What a weird couple of days. I haven't been to GCC for over 20 years. I was there for 81-83. Since the Globe articles were published many buried memories are coming to the surface. - trashing my record collection after a visit home - the day we all spent in the dining room while our lockers were searched looking for a missing overcoat - the thrice weekly communion services - serving the head table - pots and pans - workjobs I had to get on the phone today and call my only friend from those days. I came to the conclusion that we all did what we had to to survive and if that meant a kitchen raid, off to Canadas Wonderland during the May break. We did. It was a farked up time in all of our lives. Jungle John |

Brenda, If you don't mind me weighing in on this many of us were told that it best to get rid of all our "Satanic" music (rock music). I remeber a bunch of "selected" kids had to sit in the huge shall I say living room or waiting room on the main floor of the main building. We listened to these tapes about how sinful rock music was, and I remember hearing rock music played backwards, and it was suppose to be "Satanic " messages you were listening to subconsiously. For eg red rum was murder backwards. I remember feeling I was going straight to hell, and it scared the out of me.Needless to say the next break home I destroyed all my music, and Oh what I would do to get that all back!!!I was also advised by a dorm lady to tear up all my poetry, and stories, because they were too negative, and did not praise God!!!I also had a collection of my older sister Carol's poetry in a blue folder at Grenville, because I missed her so much, and having her poetry with me made me feel closer to her.I am so mad at myself to this day, and that is one thing I still can not forgive myself for to this day. I tore up all my writings, and my sister's. I wish I wsn't so innocent, scared --scared of everything/everyone, and I wish I had stood up for myself-for freedom of speech, but at the time I really thought I was going straight to hell if I didn't comply.Little did I know I was already in hell!!! If you remember later in my stay I did try standing up for freedom of speech/expression when I wrote my speech about problems Jews have living in a Christian Society-well needless to say that did not go over well at all. Sorry Jungle-John had to comment on that one--a little too close to home for me. Catherine Goss |

I think Brenda just can't believe that anyone not staff or affiliated with the C of J would do such a thing. We got rid of all our records except for one...The Keane Brothers. They were our favorite from our youth...teen dreams...that type of thing. One night, when we were at home, Brenda said she thought we should get rid of them too. I said she better do it fast before I change my mind. Out they went into the trash. After we were married for her birthday one year I got her a CD of the Keane Brothers and actually exchanged emails with John Keane. (Look them up on line...it's too funny! Yeah...that was definately devil music! The first time I bought a tape on my own, I though..."My Mom is going to freak out!" I had graduated and was working but still living at home. The tape? It was Air Supply! |

Well, Cath....When it comes to trashing our record collection....Sandra and I sold all of our albums at a yard sale (We couldn't have the devils music, but we could make money off of it!) We sold all but two. We had two albums of the Keane Brothers. No one remebers them but Sandra and I adored them! O.K. we idolized them! I remember convincing her that I had to throw them away. You would laugh your off if you could hear their music! Definately not your satan rock, that's for sure! None the less, I felt horrible for years, because they weren't just my albums. Sandra found the Keane Brothers online many years later and downloaded the albums that we had and gave me the CD she made. She's too cool that way! Poetry? Honestly! What kind of devil worshiper were you! Don't you just feel like you were nit-picked into insanity. Did you ever just want to scream LEAVE ME ALONE! How crazy.... Do you still write today? Write on, Cath! |

Jungle John! How's it going, wild thing? I thought I knew who you were but had to verify with Brenda...you put 81-83 up there but you graduated in 84...which I'm sure you remember! Do you remember 11th Grade Chemistry with Ms. Phelan? I barely passed that class thanks to you and Kip Dwyer! I remember you standing up swinging at Ms. Phelen when her back was turned and then sitting down right before she turned around. And Kip was always throwing stuff at me or poking me with his pencil! Seriously, I think I got a "D" in that class! Boys are bad...just bad! |

Remember the Air Supply tape being past around on our way to the Community? It was AIR SUPPLY but you would have thought it was a drug! What was that trip to COJ all about? Mother/Daughter retreat? Who's Air Supply tape was it? Why do I want to point my finger at Dawn Robertson?! Would that make sence? |

I do remember that! We also discussed "Hooked on Classics"...the instrumental tape with a beat! (The devil's beat according to Ms. Ortoloni! ) I don't know who that belonged to. (We'll say Dawn...it's an educated guess. That girl was trouble with a captial "T"...yes sir!) Yes...mother/daughter retreat at C of J. It was after that retreat that my best friend didn't come back with us. |

I remember listening to those tapes about rock music being so bad. I didn't have any records myself but I remember thinking at the time how bad this music must be. I find it ironic that I am now involved in the Australian Rock Music scene. I help with the MTV and other awards shows as a senior sound engineer. Just as a bit of trivia. The guitarist for Air Supply lives in my street. He is a reaaly cool guy. Talk soon Aussie_doctor |

Ah yes - the music! I believe I recall being told Stairway to Heaven was supposed to have some satanic message when played backwards. It didn't influence me though and I actually had a walkman and cassettes hidden in the ceiling over my bunk and was never caught. I played guitar and do remember my guitar books being checked over by staff members to make sure I wasn't playing anything negative. Amazing that they let me keep my Cat Stevens songs though when you think of what a wierdo he turned out to be. Music was and still is a major part of my life and I was also involved in the rock music scene for many years. Don't think it hurt me any. I certainly wouldn't have dreamed of destroying my record collection though. Fun to hear your stories - I never imagined any of you ladies listening to anything ... sorry. Karen |

I forgot to mention that the guitarist from Air Supply who lives in my Street also plays in one of the massive pentecostal churches here in Sydney. He has helped them record many albums and is a great christian man. I find this quite ironic. Regards Aussie_doctor |

OK, aussie_doctor, I couldn't let the Air Supply reference pass. Here's an analogy: Air Supply is to Led Zeppelin (or AC/DC) as tepid water is to Red Bull. Just a lighter note this morning. |

lol bluesman.....I got quite a chuckle out of that one I recall a staff kid once showing me her music she had stashed (we trusted each other quite a bit). It was nothing terribly damning in my mind, but it certainly wasn't GCC approved either. I remember thinking what a rebel she was LOL. |

Music was such a helpful tool in maintaining my sanity while at the school (Elton John a big one for me)and we loved "Signs" by the 5 Man Electrical Band (long-haired freaky people need not apply) on a further lighter note here's a bit from my old stand-up: When I was growing up I was told that rock'n'roll would fill me with lust and take me straight to hell down a road of promiscuity, drugs, even homosexuality. Of course now we know TV Evangelism leads to the same thing. (Wanna thank Rev. Ted Haggard for making that joke new again) In the years after I drew an odd comfort from songs like Supertramp's "School" and "Bloody Well Right". It was like they were there! Or Alan Parson's "I, Robot"- especially "Don't Let It Show" (Even if it's taking the easy way out, keep it inside of you, don't give in, don't tell them anything...) Oh, and Queen from "A Night at the Opera"- "Death on Two Legs (Dedicated to...)" a number of people. Memories, like the corner of my mind. Misty, water-coloured... |

I wasn't in any way implying that Air Supply was in the league of such iconic hard rock bands as Led Zeplin or Alice Cooper or AC/DC. I was just adding a foot note to one of the references above. When I remember those "Tapes" about the evils of rock music, one band mentioned was the Eagles with their song "Hotel California". You wouldn't ordinarily put the Eagles in the hard rock category either. I always found it interesting that Hotel California was associated with all of the EVIL music. I think the song itself just stated how bad the Hotel California was and to have nothing to do with it. However I digress - discussing modern music history is not what this discussion board is intended for. Cheers Aussie_doctor. |

G'day, Doc! You crack me up! Living on the same street as the guy from Air Supply? Personally, I think your too cool for school! (But then again, I didn't own any Led Zeplin!) After school I got kicked out of the house for buying a CD. Wanna take a wild guess?? Barbara Streisand! And it was her Broadway CD at that! It's official! I'm going straight to hell! Had to post that tidbit for the sake of putting a smile on everyone's face, but darn it, I'm running late. Will check in later! |

I remember the whole rock and roll is evil craze!! I almost got swept away with it as well. I owned every Beatles LP (vinyl) ever made and was told that I would surely go to hell unless I got rid of them. One day during March break I headed to the dump with two milk containers in tow. I was just about to dump my records when the business sense within me told me to stop. I took them back home and safely stored them away. Thank God I did because those records were and still are in pristine condition and likely worth thousands of dollars!!! Their music is 40 odd years old now and still the best music ever written. "And in the end....the love you take...is equal to the love..you make!!" (Lennon & McCartney) In these times of hate and intolerance, words like these make way more sense than anything that has ever come out of Farnsworth's mouth!! |

I am becoming more angry by the mintue as I read of accounts from former students. In the eyes of the religious right including the catholic church why is it so evil and wrong to listen to certain types of music, wrong to utilize birth control, wrong to encourage safe sex to stop the spreak of aids, yet the same people are silent on the issue of some holy father or right-wing pastor molesting young boys and girls. The hypocracy in religion is maddening. No different than Farnsworth teaching us that sexual thoughts were evil, yet (according to recent allegations) he engaged in sexual interference. No different than Cay and Judy teaching their flock that homosexuality is an abomination to God, yet according to their own son's, engaged in a lesbian relationship. I will no longer use the terms "father" and "mother" to refer to these people because that would imply personal respect. Hypocrates every last one of them...living and dead. |

Yes Brenda it is Jungle John and you were right, I was there 81-84. Ages 15-18. And the buddy I called was Kip. I had a really good conversation with him yesterday. He helped me put it all in perspective. Still haven't made up my mind about attending the closing "celebration". Might have to burn my yearbook on the front driveway. |

Come on Jungle John! And bring Mr. Dwyer with you too! When am I ever going to get another chance to relive my Chemistry days with the two of you? If it's too much to go to the school, a bunch of us are staying at the Royal Brock and I think we're going to get together Friday evening. No pressure, but...COME ON JUNGLE JOHN! (If you do go to the school, I'll bring marshmellows and hot dogs for the yearbook bonfire!) |

Jungle John..... it’s been a very very long time...... I’ve been thinking about your post since I read it...... had similar notions in mind (re. foot-of-the-driveway-bonfire). I’ve put a lot of effort into, and have been successful at, forgetting. Still, I get agitated just thinking about seeing that place again, so there’s a little baggage left, I suppose. I’m wondering if there isn’t something that wants to maybe take advantage to this once-in-a-life time chance to maybe form a little more closure. I’m kinda looking at it as chance for a do-over on my salutatorian duties, this time my thoughts my way. So, to anyone interested, I’ve come up with a plan. Now, I know many of you folks remain religious, and so I hope this plan will be taken in the spirit in which it is intended. That said, I apologize in advance if the symbolism offends anyone. The plan is pretty simple: a brief mock ceremony (read: a toast to the end of this chapter over some wobbly pops or another frosty beverage of your choice) to be held on the shoulders of the road in front of the school. Service would close with a couple of hymns: School’s Out followed by We Are The Champions. A couple of fireworks might even be in order. Who’s in? (I’m actually being serious here.........) Song sheets to follow......... (Even if you're not interested/think I'm nuts, read the lyrics.... I think many will find them fitting.) (Hey, Jungle – we could really jazz things up and mount ye old funeral flags - a’la the Tingle party road trip circa ’83 – with a little “no stop signs, speed limits, nobody's gonna slow me down” coming out of the speakers............ yes, I like it – I like it, it’s good.) fizzzzydrinks@gmail.com (Message edited by salutethis on September 25, 2007) |

I've paid my dues - Time after time - I've done my sentence But committed no crime - And bad mistakes I've made a few I've had my share of sand kicked in my face - But I've come through We are the champions - my friends And we'll keep on fighting - till the end - We are the champions - We are the champions No time for losers 'Cause we are the champions - of the world - I've taken my bows And my curtain calls - You brought me fame and fortuen and everything that goes with it - I thank you all - But it's been no bed of roses No pleasure cruise - I consider it a challenge before the whole human race - And I ain't gonna lose - We are the champions - my friends And we'll keep on fighting - till the end - We are the champions - We are the champions No time for losers 'Cause we are the champions - of the world -

And here's a little tune that is dedicated to Kelly...heard it today and couldn't help but cry. (Then again, we Brown girls like a good cry!) James Taylor (or as I call him, JT...yeah, me and JT are tight...) You've Got A Friend When youre down and troubled And you need a helping hand And nothing, whoa nothing is going right. Close your eyes and think of me And soon I will be there To brighten up even your darkest nights. You just call out my name, And you know whereever I am Ill come running, oh yeah baby To see you again. Winter, spring, summer, or fall, All you have to do is call And Ill be there, yeah, yeah, yeah. Youve got a friend. If the sky above you Should turn dark and full of clouds And that old north wind should begin to blow Keep your head together and call my name out loud And soon I will be knocking upon your door. You just call out my name and you know where ever I am Ill come running to see you again. Winter, spring, summer or fall All you got to do is call And Ill be there, yeah, yeah, yeah. Hey, aint it good to know that youve got a friend? People can be so cold. Theyll hurt you and desert you. Well theyll take your soul if you let them. Oh yeah, but dont you let them. You just call out my name and you know wherever I am Ill come running to see you again. Oh babe, dont you know that, Winter spring summer or fall, Hey now, all youve got to do is call. Lord, Ill be there, yes I will. Youve got a friend. Youve got a friend. Aint it good to know youve got a friend. Aint it good to know youve got a friend. Youve got a friend. |

Oh my goodness...I am laughing so hard now... I had not read this thread so I am late coming in.... someone mentioned the "Hooked on Classic's" music.... LOL When I was there... it was decided that I would teach Aerobic's... I was shown a Jane Fonda Video and told to use the exercises to teach my class... (in the Blue lounge) I remember being so upset when they told me I had to use the Hooked on Classics music for the class... I had hoped for something... anything with a bit of something... ie. words maybe... smile... (sorry for those who liked it... ) If anyone has a copy of the video "Grenville Christian College: A Very Special Place" ... you can see about 5 seconds of that class... and if you listen... the Hooked on Classics sound track.... smile Note: ( I may have posted this somewhere else... can't remember...) I was also taken up to the Dean's apartment... and I told to show them each of my exercises... Jane's pelvic tilts were banned... smile... |
