Hello JW Discussion Board! My name is Maria Bee, I am the Executive Director in Training of Factnet. I have posted my story (see the thread entitled “Introduction” on this forum), so some of you may already know who I am. I am about to celebrate my ten year anniversary of freedom from the Jehovah’s Witnesses organization, into which I was born and raised. I have something very important to discuss with you. I have chosen this particular forum for a special pilot program. I have chosen this board because of my personal experience as a former Jehovah’s Witness. Factnet is entering a new era, one that focuses more on Peer-to-Peer Support, Recovery, and Healing. After a successful pilot here on the JW board, we will roll out this model to all the other discussion boards. This is your opportunity to lead and support. I have some ideas and a general idea about what this may look like, but this is your board and I want all the feedback you have to give! Here is the basic idea: On every board, and I am sure this one is no exception, there are those people that have been out for many years, have an abundance of experience and knowledge, and to whom many turn for advice, support, and comfort. The idea is to officially recognize these people and form them into team. This should be a small group of about 4-7 people that are nominated and chosen by the members of this discussion board. Membership to this team is voluntary and is not necessarily permanent (members may return to regular status when they want to). This council of the wise, as Lawrence and I like to call it, will be responsible for the following: - Monitoring the board. - Welcoming new people. - Listening to others and providing comfort and support. - Offering advice when it is requested. - Sharing their own stories and experiences. - Ensuring that the board is safe and nurturing for all. In some cases recommending to the board administrator who should be denied access for repeated abuses. - Slowly Creating a JW recovery FAQ to help people when they leave, i.e common questions, problems, healing methods, helpful reading lists, etc. Of course anyone can welcome new people and perform many of the tasks outlined above, however for the council of the wise this will be their commission. The team will not “own” or “run” board, but rather be a gentle and wise guiding presence. The goal is to create a team that can facilitate peer-to-peer healing and set an example for others about what this looks like. I think that this model will lead to greater healing, recovery, and support; there is tremendous power in people helping people with clear and gentle intent. I am very excited about launching this new model here on the JW board! And I look forward to hearing from you all with any questions, comments, suggestions, or nominations you may have! Once the pilot is successful I will take the same Peer-to-Peer Support/Healing model that we create together to every other Factnet discussion forum. Warmly, Maria Bee Executive Director in Training, Factnet |

Hi Crawly, Your concerns have been noted and I am doing some thinking about this. I want to be careful that we allow people freedom to express themselves and work things out, sometimes this doesn't look so nice, but at the same time we want a safe, welcoming, nurturing place for people to come for support, recovery, and healing. If someone persistently gets in the way of that goal they will have to dealt with directly. I will monitor the situation and would like to discuss it with the JW Board Council of the Wise, as soon as it forms. Sincerely, Maria Bee Executive Director in Training, Factnet |
