Thanks to breaker_19_girl for suggesting this.... I want this thread to be about the good memories only while you attended GCC. Give out a Kudos to special friends or that special teacher etc. A few moments that come to my mind are 1) Ski Trips to Big Tupper 2) Oktoberfest 3) Staff - Bob Bayles, Fr. Mintz, Beth Gillis, Mr and Mrs Rawson, Mr. Poth, Mr and Mrs Ken McNeil, Mr Barnes - Jr and Sr..... 4) all the students that went to GCC especially - Patrick Graham, Francis Madhosingh, Alison Bennett, Joe Bushnell, Tim Licata, David Pickett, George Blakely, and of course many others... without you my life at GCC would have been unbearable. I am sure there are others here but with time we do forget. |

Good idea... Lets remember some good times only... in one place.... !!! 1) as previously mentioned I loved christmas at Grenville, I can smell the hot chocolate and donuts now. And, the running around and checking out what other families did for their decorations. Or looking fwd to watching Scrooge for a Friday Night Activity 2) Skating on the Lagoon for Friday Night Activity and the big bonfires.. 3) Racing out to the river in the spring to see who could jump in first. 4) Playing kick the can and capture the flag at night against other families... The childs family always won.. 5) Being there one summer for a week and and having a BBQ out back. 6) Being in the Bushnell Family and making icecream one Saturday Night in an old fashion icecream churn thing. 7) Being in Mrs. Leitchs family when I was in 7th grade and she lived out back in one of the trailors and she had a lil dog...and, I gave it a bath one time!! That was so fun... 8) Oddly, one of my fav work jobs was sweeping the stairs! And, my second fav was doing the laundry... I used to like the big extractor out in the back. I still like doing laundry today, only I don't have an extractor. 9) Planning the Grad Banquet in Grade 11. 10) Planning Cindy Barrs Shower.... |

Solid thread Tom. Here are mine... Events, etc: ski trips, playing bahamian in the gym with the boys, random gcc radio in the morning during room clean-up (we broadcasted by yelling out of our window....hahahaha. "Give me oil in my lamp" was number 1 on the charts my whole time there). And sports...thank god for sports. Friends: Miketh Irvineth, Jean-Marc St Laurent (f$ckin hilarious that dude couldn't speak french), Devitt Brown, Rob Berson, Andre Honeywell, Tony Ortoloni (where ever you are man - you have a special place in my heart...hope all has worked out well for you), Alaister Haliday (my grade 9 role model). Many, many others who I'm fortunate enough to have called my friend. Staff: Bill Bayles, Judy James, Mr Childs, Keith Barnes (dude LOVED having me on discipline in the kitchen. We'd talk for hours. I swear to god he probably went to Mintz and said, "ummmm, listen...Mintzy....seriously, Noonan hasn't been in the kitchen for a while. Pretty sure he's f$cked something up recently. Throw me a bone and get him back there". Hahahaha.... Hot chicks: I'd like to take this time thank you for being hot. I don't want to name names valerie Fairles, Gina Slozka, Samara Drouin because I don't want to forget anyone. You know who you are. While I'm at it, I'd also like to thank the hot chicks at other schools who came to watch us play sports. And the hot chicks during ski trips. Etc, etc. |

Bob Bayles was mentioned in the first post...Well, I've got a Bob Bayles story for ya! I was practicing piano in a room above the gym and he was next door practicing...something...can't remember what. Anyway, he kept popping his head in because he wanted to hear me play something. (Three years of piano...definatly not concert status!) I'd immediately stop and tell him to get lost! I don't know how many times he did it but neither of us were getting any practicing accomplished. Then it got quiet. The piano was facing a wall but I could see the door out of the corner of my eye. I kept waiting and waiting...playing a simple tune waiting for him to pop back in. Then all of a sudden I hear this laugh from behind me! Scared the you know what out of me! He had gone out the window of his room, walked over on the roof and entered my window with out me noticing! Oh, he thought he was real funny. I can still see his face getting more red as he laughed. Stupid boy! (Hard for me to imagine him as staff, but I bet he was fun!) I think back now and can't believe that we were in those rooms, away from everyone else, I think it was late in the evening. See...that's why they didn't worry about me doing anything with any boys...I was clueless!) |

I remember Miss Meyers ... she was cool! Kuddos to her... Miss Anderson, Miss Smith, Miss Rosenberger, Miss Mayberry... Cindy Barr, Mrs. Leitch, Dave Haig, Kim Leitch..... Laughing my arse off at Miss Stewarts table, teasing Robert Soth and watching his ears go red. To all the nursies who passed through that school who always took good care of me... Like Mrs. Rawson and Mrs. Christmas... And, lastly to Dr. Stewart.... although he has passed... for being one of the smartest people I ever met. For teaching the student and not the class and recognizing how each student learned and arranging his teacher load so he could teach us via the way we learned. |

What a timely thread... Yesterday I was at my 'fun' job, cooking at a local farmer's market diner. When I first started working there, they were a bit leery about my kitchen skills, but have been pleasantly surprised at how adept I am. NOW, the GCC part. My skill is due to... drumroll please... bettyleitch, keithbarnes, sisterruthchristine, mr.izola, bethbushnell, and a few I'm sure I'm forgetting. Working the kitchen as a new staff was great fun. Keith Barnes - man, I had such a crush on him... Years later I went back and we did a bit of a 'dance' (nothing interesting) but I wasn't willing to live there. Heard later he moved away. Shoot, missed out on a good one. Funny thing is, my husband reminds me a lot of Keith - even the same age. Loved hanging out with Sister Ruth Christine. She called it my 'life 101' class. Volleyball with Randy Steinbach. If you were there, the away game where he heard "these shorts are so geeky" from the adjoining stall... Yup, that was me. In the boys bathroom. By accident. Really. Balloon Rodeo - riding in a balloon over the St. Lawrence. So much fun. Choir practice. Yeah. No, really. Loved it. Gum stuffing. The big fund raising idea that was only going to take us one night. Remember night 3? ... he he Sing-a-longs. Loved the music. Man from Snowy River. First time. Second time. Third time. Fourth... okay, not the fourth time. Doing laundry with Daryl Staneck. Man, could that woman weave a story. She'd read these really cool books, then she'd basically retell the story to me. Loved that. English class. Bob Irving (I think it was you...) Break on through to the other side - that article we read... Elisa Ortolani, Eric Tupper and me. The three stooges. Or was it the musketeers? Softball. Andrew Do. Another crush. Taught me how to play. Too much fun. Mrs. Barnes - amazing woman. Crusty, straight-up and real as it gets. Loved her. Lastly - for all these good memories, I have a request. If you have any memories (anything) of my brother David J. Price. He would have been there around 92' would you please either post them or email me? I know my parents would love to complete that year of his life. He never talked about his year at GCC much. It really crushed them when he died. So many little moments gone. Thanks. pricenglish at netscape dot com (Message edited by rozpriceenglish on August 17, 2007) (Message edited by rozpriceenglish on August 17, 2007) |

Definately, Dr. Stewart. During my time he was an "outsider" and lived off campus. He always seemed like he was trying to guide us towards our own beliefs rather than those of the staff. His bible studies were more historical than religous. He was facinating and probably one of the smartest people I've ever met - to this day. He definately was a wonderful man and spirit. |

hoperules: Thanks for remembering Dr. Stewart as he truly was one of the greatest and gentlist people I ever knew. Man, that dude was so smart! I mean, as a kid I was so in awe of his life, he was a DR. and teacher and a priest. He had travelled every where and there just was not too much that man did not know. But, he was never uppity and never put people down. He lived off campus even when I was a student. He was my history teacher for a few years and what I liked about him: Presntation was not key it was the facts and what you learned. I remember handing in an essay on Confusious and it never made it from rough to good copy and there were arrows and scribbles every where. And, he still gave me top marks and told me how much he enjoyed it. I agree he used to allow us to think for ourselves... and that made him even more of a genious..... His wife Leona I believe passed away quite some time ago...but, again a really kind and gentle soul. I used to be so Jealous that Miss Stewart had such neat dad. To this day... a man who truly left an amazing imprint on my life... |

I have to agree with hoperules. Dr Stewart was the most amazing teacher. Thankfully my classes with him were spent on him telling his stories of africa and other places he had travelled and work. Thanks to my best friend at GCC Derek Metcalfe, he left one year while I was there and would mail me letters with penthouse pictures in the middle of the pages. He was my best man when I got married and I was his best man at his wedding. Love this guy. Sadly the only great memory was the drama club. I dont know if the school continued to book the theater in brockville for its productions after I left, but doing shakespear and Gilbert & sullivan in a theater in front of family, friends and the citizens of town that made GCC great for me. No amount of practice was too much. Thanks Liane for getting this thread started..I am still smiling thinking of these memories. Later Dan |

I was down in Florida this weekend visiting friends and people I used to work with and they where so happy to see me. They had been talking about how I was good at organizing fun activities at work and at get-togethers. It's good to be known as the hostess with the mostest! That I learned at GCC. So I have to give credit to Mr. Childs and his MCing especially during the first week of school and the ladies who spent many hours in the art room while I was there busy working on my paintings. I learned great creative skill from them. I have many fond memories from x-country running Almost made-out with a senior boy my first year on the trails. (He shall remain nameless). He was two years ahead of me and he was told to stay away from me. Yeah, I liked training on the boys trails, it gave me a good appreciation for the outdoors, amongst other things. Thanks to Ms. Mayberry for pushing me out there. Running is a skill that has served me well over the years. She was one of the nice ones. I also LOVED track! It allowed us to be naughty especially when we were away. Yes my days as Flo-Jo were great. I was so proud to see my bro kick butt in track. He was smaller than those senior boys he raced against, they looked like they were on steroids but he always surprised everyone coming from nowhere and putting them to shame. I made some good friends there. Big shout-out to all my peeps that looked out for me and made life there bearable and enjoyable. To Dr. Stewart for starting the International club. I remember having our first event which was an african diner. That was special. I loved choir, especially the trips we made to Ottawa for the Christmas concert and the Skydome. Volleyball! My best memory was an away game which I served a very hard ball that bounced into the spectators and may have destroyed some poor guy's family jewels. The other team's schools was not pleased. Mr. Steinbach asked my teammates to surround me when we were walking out in order to protect me from the angry mob. I will not forget Miss. Smith and her love and generosity. She is a gem of a person. I also loved the grade 11 carnivals, campfire sing-a-longs, snoccer, ice-cream bars and chocolate cake. I loved it when boys stood up for you when you sat down at the dining table, still like that. I HATED those mandatory poetry recital and public speaking things. Couldn't memorize anything! Overall, I was one of the lucky that had mainly good memories. Maybe those endorphins from all the sporting activities I did erased most of my bad feelings about GCC. |

My best memories were as follows: - Campfires at Brown's Bay - G&S and coming out of my shell to perform the role of Pirate King in 1983 - off the American staff kids with my liberal views and pro-Canadian stances on most issues..lol - Developing academically from a poor student to honours culminating in acceptance to RMC - Picking apples - The late Dr. Stewart..who was the best teacher and person I have ever known. He visited me in Kingston hospital during the summer after I had a serious surgery on my legs - Jeff Carlton....very kind and honest person who always put a smile on my face - Watching Dukes of Hazzard on the tube in the Red Lounge and watching FF cringe in his chair..lol - First crushes and romances (Jeanne Albert ;) - Staff who took the time to encourage me to grow and acknowledge my own individuality There are many others but not enough room to post!! |

who could forget the trips into town with orville barnes racing both ways as if cops were chasing him the bayles brothers were cool and so many staff members and staff kids too. i spent many a break there and got to see them relaxed. it was great. i must say my favourite memory was waking everyone up early for breakfast prep, setting up the coffee machine, sitting with the crue and getting all caffeined up with hot chocolate or coffee or mixing it up. |

My good memories are from when I was bad cause when I'm bad I'm- nevermind. Another staff kid and I playing Alice Cooper's "School's Out" over the Main building PA system on the last day of school June '74. They never found out who did that one. Complete chaos. Turning off the main power switch, timed just as friends in the student lounge screamed, "Repent or God will punish us all!!" Again, chaos. Smoking at the Maitland Arms. Ad-libbing a pot joke in a student play. Skipping the occasional Sat. chapel/workjobs. Having a master key. Telling my folks I was sleeping in the dorm while telling the dorm I was sleeping in Murray Hall and then going into town. The aftermath of the two-headed calf. (Right out of "The Chrysalids") Convincing my parents to let me watch the Cher special with Elton John and Bette Midler in their apartment. The time the bus was pulled over for a search just inside the gates after Sat. shopping in town and all the kids trying to find ways to hide their contraband. Best image: a student trying to kick a bottle of Baby Duck under the bus which kept rolling back out from under. Teacher coming back into a noisy classroom saying "There's no talking in here!" to which a student replied, "Yes there is sir. Everyone's talking." |

i hereby retract my commendation of Gordon MIntz and his pizza parties. I have no idea what his goals were set to be or if his mentor was FF. To dream of being the leader of such a place is incomprehensible to me, I hope this was not the case with GM. However, if GM was about change and success, then he has failed. |

oneflower your post made me laugh. As a former houseparent some of the things the students would try to get away with or just didn't really think about always gave me a chuckle later. -Students were leaving food and wrappers in there room so we had a temporary ban on eating in your rooms. I walked into a room as a student was pulling a bag of chips out of his locker. My response was "I didn't see that, I'll be back in 10 seconds and I actually don't want to see that" I walk back in and he's eating away at his chips so I told him he was in trouble and he asked in a surprised voice "For What?!" and I responded that he knows he's not supposed to eat in his room "I'm not!" as he finishes by popping another chip in his mouth. I figured he's either a huge smart-, thought I was dumb, or was having a slow day. Either way he made me laugh so I just sent him to the common room to finish the chips. - there was also the student that swore in front of me and when he noticed I noticed he got all flustered "Oh , sorry Mr. Poelman,Oh f--k I just said , f--k I did it again. I'm going to shut up now" I probably should have been all stern and sent him to dishcrew or detention, but I just couldn't help but laugh. He got a stern warning. |

- I mentioned about the student that laid between his mattress and wall and made the bed around him to try and skip chapel - There was also a student, same one who I caught eating in his room, who was getting in trouble for something from my boss. I don't remember what it was for anymore but I do remember as he's walking down the stairs he flips the bird at our reflection in the window forgetting for a split second that if he can see, us we can see him. It dawned on him about 1 sec later as we could see the "Oh s--t" look in his eyes. It didn't help his situation any, but when we were talking about it later we got a good laugh out of it. |

My good memories of GCC are: - Friday night activities. I just loved them. I was one of the Techno-geeks helping behind the scenes but it was great fun. I especially liked the talent quests and the treasure hunts - Science class with Mr Childs. I think once we borrowed a bus, weighed it at the local weighing station and then found a backstreet in Brockville and did velocity and accelleration experiments in it. We also did some wacky experiment with a dry-chemical rocket engine and some complicated contraption to work out a force/time graph of the engines power. I have so many great memories of science class. - one summer I remember writing a computer program on those old Commodore PET computers to play music. Then another staff kid and I programmed 4 of the computers to play Bach's fugue in G minor. This took about 1 month of code writing and manual entering. It was probably one of the geekyest (is that a word) things I have ever done. - I loved breaky prep and I remember I lived in one of the trailes while in Grade 10. I would get up at 04:45, have a shower and then walk to the kitchen. In winter time - my hair would freeze over. I thought this was so cool (mind the pun) as coming from Australia - these temperatures were new to me. - I remember another staff kid boy and I would sneak down to the river on our bikes and go skinny dipping. (We were two blokes so nothing particularly naughty happened.) One time when we returned - one staff member asked us why our hair was so wet... We just made indications that we were rather sweaty from a long bike ride. (I think that might have been a little lie - oh no...) - I loved working with Mr Bill Rawson doing some electrical work. I learnt heaps from him. He was a very patient man. - I loved cross country skiing. I wasn't very good, but loved it anyway. - I loved Dr Stewart. He and his wife Leonie visited us in Australia a few years ago. It was fantastic. As I am a doctor, he and I exchanged so many stories. He still was full of great expressions like: "wouldn't that put gravy on your best neck tie", and "wouldn't that just rot your socks". His history class was the only history class I enjoyed. I remember he would drive around in a little hatch back car and he could go from Toronto to Brockville in 2.5 hours. He was a speed demon on the road. - I remember water skiing and sailing on the St Lawrence river. - I remember we once swam across the river to New York state once. (We had a boat go with us in case a big ship came along.) - I remember one work job where I went with Miss Karen Anderson up to one of the lagoons to catch heaps of frogs for science class. I have so many good memories. Talk to you all soon. Aussie_doctor. |

Oneflewover, your examples have me laughing out loud. Geez, it's frustrating that the things like that that I remember will give me away. I'll just have to enjoy other people's wacky memories so I really hope people keep them coming. Maybe some of you who are lurking can feel comfortable adding to the board in this vein. Well, I remember the staff surprising us -- and I use the term "surprise" loosely because it happened most years, I think -- by busting through the dining room doors in the servers' uniforms carrying banana splits for us in appreciation for all our hard work or whatever it was. And can you remember how INSANELY grateful we all were!? We cheered vigorously, big, goofy smiles all around. I was hungry most of the time at GCC (and tired all of the time) which made food-based novelty kinda special. Now I'm all like, Wow, they took a scoop of vanilla and chocolate, cut a banana, and it was like the Beatles had come to Brockville in the 60s. Do you remember filing out after church and having to hug CF? I HATED it. Even before I understood the depth of what was happening, I still didn't know the guy! Much less want to hug him. Ugh. Keep your hugs to yourself, thanks. One great thing about the new chapel was that there were more exits so the problem was essentially solved. You just had to avoid the staff that would insist you get back in line for your mandatory hug. "Don't give me hug -- give me a squueeeeeeze!" I meant these examples to be sort of funny. Didn't set out to be negative. |

I remember one that I think involved you oneflewover. I was helping to produce a talent show, so I borrowed this old Stan Freberg bit about "Bang Gunleigh" brought to you by puffed grass. So you, I think it was you, are doing your part doing the puffed grass commercial and you stopped with the script and said something like, "I prefer Acapulco Gold." I remember thinking it was funny, but not being sure why and hoping nobody was offended.... If I only knew what I know now..... (he he) Here's the original bit: http://www.rhino.com/store/ProductDetail.lasso?Number=75645 Bang Gunleigh, U.S. Marshall Field (Message edited by kmiller1610 on October 22, 2007) |

Nice to be remembered kmiller. i actually have held onto the old mimeographed script if you can believe it... my adlib was "Puffed Grass cereal is a product of the makers of Acapulco Gold" I think only two boarding students got the reference (or laughed anyway) and I got in no trouble whatsoever other than a talking to by (I guess) you and the other staffer producing the radio play. what I remember of that was the drug reference blanketed the whole production and it wasn't fair to others in the cast. something like that. |

ps love to know who you are inthe70s. gimme a hint? If you know the BabyDuck story... well that was the best of times. it was downhill from there i think. I remember so much from that day I think i can still picture the faces of the people circling the bus waitng to be searched and laughing at the attempts to hide the wine. Eventually I grabbed it and hid it behind a tree (to no avail). I believe I remember whose wine it actually was. |

Hey Breaker....I love your line up - Janet etc. b/c i remember them all so well - great people, real people. Dr.Stewart ROCKED!!! The first teacher to actually give a hoot about students and recognize that some need different methods when being taught. For some reason when looking at one dimensional pieces of paper with questions I used to freak out. He used to do my test orally - not help me - but remind me about how much I actually knew. GREAT man by far my personal favorite. |

They had a wonderful service for Dr. Stuart when he died a few years ago. I remember his lectures about STD's from when he was in the army... it was enough to make you never have sex again! |

It is nice to have a different perspective about things sometimes. I for one could never in a million years imagine GCC having lectures about STDS. But, I can also see Dr. Stewart doing it and I can see his face as does it.... And, here all his funny words as he speaks so animately about it. I loved Dr. Stewart and would never deny that, he was a pioneer indeed. what a truly amazing man and as I have always said likely the smartest person I have met and may ever meet. Jason, it was because of dummies like myself that he did that whole oral testing. He started that when I was in grade 9 because he realized a few of us understood what he was teaching we just could not answer it in a small space and we like to talk the story out. It was because of Dr.Stewart that I began to realize that history was real and that we could tell it in such a way that it was fun and had a purpose. I love history and I want to know everything about it because of that man. I realized it was just "not" another subject we were forced to endure in an endless curriculum. He really was a light and true gift to us all. I hope he got wings when he died... He really was an earthly angel. |

Dr. Stewart marched to the beat of his own drum and was not your prototypical GCC staff member. I used to have some long talks with him about life and he made no bones about the fact that he didn't always like some of the CofJ methodology used at GCC. I remember being in his office one day and someone came up to report that the order of syringes didn't come in as expected. His response was something like this...."Well, thats just Bullllllshiitttt!!" He was a wise, caring man who wasn't afraid to show he was a human being. I respected him for that...much more other staff who were way out of touch with the real world. |
