Everyone wanted to be a prefect but me! I sometimes used to give my head shake for that because perks were involved! It was early on in my grade 12 year, and amazingly I was doing well and my grades were improving and Miss Case and Mrs Childs moved me from level 4 to level 5 classes because I had been getting good marks. They asked me to think about going to grade 13... not happening in my mind. I can get out after this year and I am taking the chance... Anyhoo, I am sitting in class one day and Kim Leitch came and got me and told FF wanted to talk to me. All the way down stairs and while sitting in Lucas Lounge waiting I am thinking about what I was possibly in trouble for. And, nothing came to mind...then I thought uhoh..maybe somebody died at home or something.... None of the above...when FF called me in his office he had a smile on his face and complimented my achievements that year and told me he wanted to make me a prefect. I was honured ... nobody get me wrong. He also told me who else he planning on pinning as prefects and PITS and told me what good company I was in. I had a friend back then who soooooooo wanted to be a prefect and her name was not mentioned. I asked about her and they told me that perhaps in second semester she may be considered as a PIT. She was not yet ready! I declined the honour though and bluntly told him that I could not do it. I told him that I lived by his rules while I was there but when at home I lived by my rules...and therefore I could not be two faced and do that to my friends. Old Charlie was shocked and dumbfounded for a second. Then fire burned in his eyes and he gave me a minute to reconsider... I did not need the minute... I was not rude or disrespectful, I just simply did not want the job. I was promptly sent to the pot sink..although, I think it was just a quck thing as I did not have to change outta uniform and I was not there long. I remember being in class again later that day. However the next day my parents were sitting in Lucas lounge when I was pulled outta class and again told that FF wanted to see me. My father was furious...and his concubine was not entirely amused but calm. You see, they were supposed to be on a flight to Mexico or something and not sitting in old Charlies office... She the concubine told Old Charlie that she was not amused she had been forced to delay her trip and that it was ridiculous she had to be involved in this. If I did not want the honour and I did not want the resume builder or the responsibility than it should be just that. I was the one who would suffer my consquences later should I want to apply to more prestigous colleges etc... Upon leaving, she told me she was shocked at my honesty, sorry they had disciplined me....but that I should have kept my mouth shut and went with the flow. But, she also told me that she admired my courage and that I stood up for what I believed in...but perhaps this was a life lesson I would learn ... when and when not to open my mouth. As a footnote to the story ... the girl I mentioned above did make prefect, she did become two faced even more so... But, she did win the prefect award at Grad that year.... Even while she was a prefect...hahahaha..she hated those morning silent chapel walks more than I did... and she and I used to hide in the cedar closet (on the third floor Murray Hall)and in our room closet behind our evening gowns while the rest of them were outside. |

HI LIANE------Great story which I can certainly relate to!! I remeber giving back my Prefect pin one year and paying for that with a tour of duty in the pot sink. God, that did not go over to well! Can't add more because I have to dash to work. But enjoyed reading your story. Have a good day |

Ahh yes. The hiding spots, they always made me laugh. Most of the kids didn't want to go to chapel, which I could understand cause I hated it to. The most common hiding spots were of course the closets and then the bathroom stalls. The one that made me laugh the most tho was this tall skinny kid pushed his top mattress just enough that he could fit between it and the wall and then made the bed around him so he looked like part of the bed. It was genius as you couldn't tell. He was only caught afterwards. |

Yeah...hahahahaha...I loved hiding... hahahaha. I remember one particular night, where I made it through study hall all the way to the end. End meant Compline, not a fan of compline... kinda creeped me out. Hindsight, maybe I might have found some reverance and peace of mind. But, that is neither here nor there. I usually went to bed early as mentioned in another posting because I was sick a lot and sometimes... I would just go the dorm at the end of study hall instead of compline. I was never really questioned as I was relatively trusted. Anyways there was a group of girls one night outside the dinning room after study hall and they did not want to go to compline. I told them to follow me and just act natural like they were supposed to be in the dorm. And, they did follow me, but the idiots did not act natural and chose to stay in a group. Anyways we got on one of the floors and had just entered the hall on one stairwell and Miss Leitch (Kim) was going down stairs at the other end of the hall. And, she looked at us...but continued down...One of the girls loudly said I think were busted or something... and the flock ran for the bathroom... I went along for the ride. About 2 mins later Miss Leitch burts open the bathroom door and starts calling names and tells to come out. I was the first name she called... the girls all appeared. And, Miss Leitch said I am waiting Liane...and I said " I am not here and a figment of your imagination". She was quiet a sec...started to say something and her voice cracked as she was a laughing. I might have been feeling cocky that night and thought I am busted now...going all the way! Well, a couple girls snickered at my response. And, that did not impress her although she was laughing too. She lined us up out in the hall against the wall. And, handed out demerits...hahaha... poor girls! That is what you get for not being sneaky though. Anyways, she sent them to compline... and kept me back. I was kinda shittin bricks though...she walked me to my room. Told me she knew I was the ring leader... and then told me I was not getting a demerit because I made her laugh. She then told me to get to bed and have my lights out in 10 minutes or I would be doing "D" the next day. It was too late to go to compline then. The fact I never got a demerit kinda ticked the other girls off though... But, hey like I said I told them to act natural but they went in like a herd of elephants... |

The best thing about the pin was watching their faces when you said you didn't want it. |

There was a rich kid I had classes with who did SO not deserve a leader or prefect pin - he was snotty to staff and kind of a tool to a lot of students - sure as hell wasn't a role model! But..... his dad was L&L - "Loaded & Local". One day he was being a knob in the middle of Mrs. Barr's GWI class I loudly asked him "Hey, *****, that's a great pin... How much did it cost?" Mrs Barr went purple, she was trying so hard not to laugh. |

Breaker_19_girl, No, you weren't alone in never wanting to be a prefect. I hated the thought of participating in a system where leadership was essentially defined as getting ahead by sucking up to the staff and narcing on other students. Who got to be prefects? Although there were some exceptions, as far as I was concerned: - staff and COJ kids (unless they were there for punishment), automatically. I learned early not to trust anything they ever said, or to say anything within earshot of them. They had serious motivation to get their punishment lifted by ratting on someone else to 'prove' their worthiness. - the students who were willing to narc on other students. - the students whose parents were so well off that the school curried favour in expectation of financial donations. Most of the prefects were simply appointed by Farnsworth, but were fully distrusted by the other students, except for the naive ones. (Sorry to any of you who were 'honest' prefects, but that was my blanket opinion of you as a group for three years, with only a few exceptions.) DK |

In my day (late 90's) Prefects/Leaders were for the most part alright, some were 'narc's but most of 'em were alright, hell i can rember chatting with the friendlier ones when i was on D once or twice. what really got to me though was how some of them we so bloody two-faced, to Mr. Mintz, or FF etc they'd be all sugary, and then when they werent' around they'd mock them. I remember one time they were all mocking how Mr. Mintz used to always say 'That's Awsome!' I mean i thought it was pretty lame too, but i didn't wear a pin. Funny thing was i probably would have made a more decent Prefect than some of them, but it never happened. |

In my grade 13th year, I was the only grade 13 without a prefect pin or "butter" bar so one day I got a call to come down to the head office. I don't remember who gave me the cheesy gold bar, not one of the nicer metal ones, but they just handed it to me. I walked into the guest room across the hall from the reception desk, looked at the bar in disgust and fought mentalty not to spit on it. I knew why they did it but put it on anyways. I was a section leader but a grade 12 prefect was under me. Nobody listened to him so I guess they felt I had to have some symbol that granted me the authority to be a leader in the section. My section rarely had perfect marks but we were not last which was the important part. Anyone who was in my section probably knew that I wanted a happy section where everyone got along and didn't sweat the small stuff like inspections. Some of the good times... |

Ah yes, the prefects. Still annoys me to see the little stars beside their names in the yearbook supplementary class pictures. As if they were really any better than the rest of us! I had an "honorable mention" in Grade 12 - I guess I was sort of a prefect-in-training. Then I spent the summer in Banff, Alberta where I experienced my first taste of fun & freedom. I returned for Grade 13 with a "negative attitude" and needless to say I never got the coveted prefect pin ! |
