I don't comment often, because I generally am to busy. But... I have a minute or two...

Things that were not tolerated in our society a generation ago, are now not only accepted, but are even praised. Abortion, homosexuality and lack of manners are just a few. I want to concentrate on the latter.

In today’s society, having that comeback remark, that one liner is viewed as an asset, as a mark of intelligence. If you watch current television programming, much of comedy is simply the ‘art of snark’. Listen to the politicians of today, instead of addressing the issues, they are too busy sniping at their opponents, making sure they have the sound bite for the six o’clock news. A generation ago, people treated each other with civility. Not so today.

I participate in several political chat boards, and the ‘art of snark’ passes for debate. The supporters of an issue all view the retorts as ‘scoring points’ and ‘winning the argument.’ In reality, the use of snarky remarks is a ruse to cover the fact that the person cannot dispute the point, and as a general disrespect for one another.

A lot of what is written on this board is nothing more then snarky remarks that the writer thinks shows his/hers intelligence and ‘scores points’ for their side. Nothing could be farther from the truth.

The ‘art of snark’ may be a desirable worldly trait, but it is most definitely not a Godly one.

Hmm.

Tell that to some of the greatest Statesmen that ever lived; Washington, Jefferson, Burr, Hamilton etc. And they are several generations removed from ours.

In reality, the use of snarky remarks is a ruse to cover the fact that the person cannot dispute the point..,

Interesting point, and one that ML should consider. So far on FN, she is the queen of snark.

Suprisingly I find myself in agreement with a post of WaaS. It is actually an important issue and the 'art of snark' is a catchy phrase that fits the bill.

There is a related issue of trying to score a one-dimensional 'point'. Narrowing the focus of a discussion to just one point and making sure you don't get the full picture. That is especially common in debates and discussions today. I see it in apologetic discussions all the time.

Shalom,
Praxaluh
