What is the correct meaning of the Greek word ‘baptize/baptism’? Why did the authors of the King James Version transliterate the Greek word into English? Let us look for a moment before you answer. “Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.” Acts 2:38 (KJV) Why didn’t the authors simply say “Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be (im)(sub)mersed in water every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.” | ||

The Jews had a water cleansing act, but it was not a baptism. So, baptism was a new tradition for the Jews which was never a Jewish act but an act done by many different pagan groups, often with blood but sometimes water. Sometimes poured, sometimes sprinkled, and sometimes submerged. I think Jesus was making a statement, if an act is not contrary to God, it is ok to allow it in the practice. He was trying to bring together people of different traditions. | ||

Actually ba2, we still have a "water clensing act" called a Mikveh. It is used to clense the soul/spirit, not the body. We have only ever used water, and it had to be pure, unused water at that, like rainwater. http://mikvah.org/default.asp | ||

Yaakov, yes I did actually know about Mikveh and that it is still practiced, especially by the women. But my Jewish friends have told me very clearly that a Mikveh is not a baptism. Thanks for jumping in. | ||
