Did Bob Weiner just think, yeah this guy is what I would like to be like? He will be the perfect ambassador for Maranatha, he is everything I am not? If Rice was exactly the same but only 5'9" would he have been put on the same fast track? Some of those Rice Broocks testimonies were about physical size and strength. He was playing basketball and some guy was taking the Lords name in vain and Rice snapped and grabbed the guy and threatened to hurt him and other christians called him off. You can't do that....etc. I heard another story about Rice preaching I think it was in Berkeley and they were throwing food and junk at him and he started to shake and told them something like you don't want to get me mad. I don't know just curious. Rice does kind of have the style you would expect of the corporate PR guy at the podium addressing all the tire sales men in the audience. It would be cool to see where would Rice be if he had Phil Bonassos body thats all. Would he have the same wife and success? You know if Rice had never encounterd MCM maybe he would be a congressman or senator or something. |

Greetings! 40/40...I'm just going to have to disagree with you again...you said you were "just a little Maranatha runt...". You aren't a runt, in the Lord's eyes I suspect you are what some of these men you mention have preached that they aspire to be...a "Warrior" for the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Now, I cannot say I always understand what your sword is battling but the intent of your heart is obvious...I'll admit I still have to pull over & figure it out from time to time. But I'll always ask if I have a question (if I have access to a High Speed Internet connection...lovely words). I've never met most of the individuals whose names have been discussed on this board, but my heart continually rejoices in humble thankfulness to not have been burdened with being anything but a little tiny ant in the Kingdom of the Lord. Knowing I was and will always be an ant and my insignificance has been a blessing beyond all things....even so it was difficult to understand my "nothingness" without the Grace & Mercy of God because after all I was such a "good" little ant for many years. To have been handicaped further by great wealth or physical beauty or intellectual might would have been a tremendous burden to overcome. Especially since people sometimes so want to worship a "king" and encourage & support (however unwittingly) leaning on "self" & not on Jesus. It is easier to sacrifice to an earthly King who promises earthly gold than sacrifice (although it really isn't...it is Abundance) for an unseen Eternity...something about "Faith". Remember how the Israelites bugged the Lord for a "King" to be like "everybody else" (have that new BMW, Rolex & diamond ring)...and they were delighted with a Saul but the ever so human-hearted David was God's choice (and Jesus had no place to call "Home"). It saddens me that men (generic women too) want "Idols" instead of the Lord...and as much as ministers today seem to be preaching that a man can become the image of God...They are really preaching turning God into the image of man...when they leave out Jesus and how without Him we are all just silly little ants...and from Heaven's heights...6'tall doesn't tower over 5'tall a bit. What's noticed is if the ant is carrying its little grain of sand where the Father wants it placed...One grain of sand at a time. One lost sheep returned to Jesus hand at a time. And there's much Joy in serving the Lord one little step at a time... My prayer is that those who knew this Joy once come again to His Embrace not just for themselves but to use their tremendous talents to reach the lost & dying with the Good News of Jesus Christ...as you say...time grows short... Hope you feel better after your rant. |

Hi Wildwood those are gracious words. Your right we should be content in the Lord and take each day as it comes and lean on him. I guess my rant is a little about coveting, even if it is just about the image of someone not that I want to be Rice Broocks I don't. Like Dust said this ministry is a lot about coveting. To be fare MCM/EN is not responsible for me coveting. It is hard not to covet multitudes of things all the time and then of course you don't get those things or they are not possible and then you think that kind of sucks. That is a tricky sin because you might end up slaying it one day and you may say I will be thankfull and content and the very next day it ends up coming back and you don't even realize it. Being hateful for instance is very bad but at least you know when your doing it and you can repent of it. Not coveting is easier said then done. |

Rice was everything Bob wanted to be physcically but was not. In terms of preaching Greg was incredible. Both guys Greg and Rice were loaded with testorone. I say Greg almost attack a Mormon missionary- I do not use the work loosely. These guys are the opposite of what Jesus preached on the Sermon on The Mount. I will leave it at that |

I think it is kind of unfair, but I have seen a disproportionate number of top leadership jobs: denominational leaders + CEO's go to tall people. Psychologically, I think tall men get an advantage over others. Maybe comes from primeval instinct where the tallest/biggest/strongest man would have been able to dominate the family-tribe because no one had the guts to take him on. |

yea, patriarchal violence from clansmen. My understanding is that Jesus spoke up to put an end to this nonsense. That's why his ministry involved women who were precarious, unmarried, unclean to Jews, and in breach with what jewish society thought as acceptable. And that is why they (the establishment) got mad at him, to the point of asking the Romans to kill him. It just amazes me that these EN'ers want to build a society that reflects times of 1000 BC,(in mentality, yet retaining the hi-tech) almost as if Jesus is irrelevant to them? They bring to the fore the most unpleasant aspects of human nature (primal instincts and violence) and put it up as a godly standard. |

Philip You ain't so short yourself. AF Confronting ideologies at odds with the Gospel of Jesus Christ is a 2000 year struggle which does not exclude the church both ancient and modern. In fact, the early church was fraught with error, internal strife and other problems and can not be held up as the apex of Christian formation. A book that helped me understand some of the dynamics of the tension between church (as part of the Kingdom of God) and empire is: Colossians Remixed: Subverting the Empire (Paperback) by Brian J. Walsh, Sylvia C. Keesmaat It may be too postmodern for some of our moderns but I highly reccomend it for understanding that the struggle continues. http://www.amazon.com/Colossians-Remixed-Subverting-Brian-Walsh/dp/0830827382 |

Well AF their not all testosterone filled guys. My original pastor I will call him AWRootbeer. Dilly knows this brand. Anyway there was a 7-11 near our campus actually 2 and there is a section at the front of the little convenience stores where you can pick up free newsletters and whatever. So my friend was with this guy and he walked in and scooped up all the free religous (World Wide Church of God and other junk) papers. Now this caught the attention of the guy at the counter who I believe was from the mideast perhaps Iranian but I am not sure. So the guy is saying no,no,no, don't do that. But they smiled and waved picked up the very large pile of free heretical stuff and threw it in the dumpster (it might have been the garbage can but I don't think so). For an average guy hearing stories like this at Maranatha and other far more in your face stories, your thinking wow, balls of steel. Rice and Greg Ball stories are far more aggressive though. There are other examples like that. |

Hey did any of you guys in EN/HP ever sing the were taking over song? I remember some of the guys in MCM who were in it before me joking about it at the church when they sang it on another campus. It is kind of cultish but he was a semi nice guy / true believer and it really was half serious, half joke. A little in your face though. |

We are taking over We are moving out in God We are taking over And the battle has been won... Is that it? I have a vague recollection of the tune and can't remember the other verses/words -- but yes we sang it, I think, in the early days in Chapel Hill, NC, at least. |

freedom I don't remember that song so if I sang it in the mid 80's, it was not to many times like most of the favorites. I do remember guys who came from another church who started ours and they joked about walking around campus strumming a guitar and singing "were taking over" in front on non MCM people. They kind of believed they were taking over. One other thing I wanted to say about the macho attitude of the top dogs, was it goes back to Bob and Joe Smith and sheperding. I remember Joe was always afraid of lowering standards and giving license to sin. He preached about license quite a bit. So obviously Joe's solution was to promote an authoritarian system that would not allow license to slip in among new believers. The solution was be holy and obey those that God has put in authority above you. To question them was to question God even though it was not usually that blunt but most people can connect the dots. The ironic thing is Joe and Bob's solution to prevent sin and license ended up promoting license in the future by allowing leaders like Rice and Phil B not to be held accountable by using the system that Bob and Joe promoted. That is the ironic part. |
