Scandal, sex and sanctimony Paul Crouch and TBN Los Angeles Times/September 18, 2004 The time was the autumn of 1996, the scene a cabin in the San Bernardino mountains near Los Angeles. The cabin was owned by the Trinity Broadcasting Network, the world's largest televangelist organisation with outlets on satellite, cable and terrestrial channels around the world. That much we know. According to Lonnie Ford, an admittedly troubled, sometime drug addict who worked for the station, it was also the site of an inappropriate, and potentially scandalous, sexual encounter between himself and TBN's president and founder, Paul Crouch. For eight years, Ford has been threatening to go public with the story and has written a lengthy manuscript detailing his allegations. The two sides have been in and out of court, money has changed hands and each has accused the other of acting in bad faith. Crouch has denied everything, as well he might, since homosexuality is a big no-no in the Christian fundamentalist world which he inhabits, and which has provided him with a lifestyle of striking lavishness over 31 years. The star evangelist on TBN, Benny Hinn, once announced that "God will destroy the homosexual community of America ... with fire". For eight years, TBN managed to keep the story under wraps, persuading courts to keep the relevant documents sealed and threatening Ford with legal action if he tried to break the terms of a 1998 settlement and seek a publisher for his manuscript. That changed this month, though, when the Los Angeles Times got wind of the affair and went public with at least the gist of it. Through interviews with some of those involved, including a friend of Ford's who helped him to write the manuscript, the Times pieced together a tawdry legal history in which Ford has demanded large sums in exchange for his silence, and TBN reacted first by paying up and then by branding him a liar and extortionist. America may be about to witness its first juicy televangelist scandal in 15 years. In a hastily issued statement last weekend, TBN described the allegations as "deplorable", "salacious" and "false", but avoided going into any details of what may or may not have transpired during that weekend in the mountains. |

Ford's friend and co-author Sandi Mahlow, meanwhile, told the Times how Ford had broken down in tears after returning from the cabin near Lake Arrowhead and told her that he and Crouch had engaged in sexual acts. "Lonnie has a lot of bad traits. One thing he isn't, and that's a liar," Mahlow said. The Times also quoted a letter written by TBN lawyer Dennis Brewer, in which he recalled Crouch's youngest son, Matt, telling his then law partner, David Middlebrook: "I am devastated. I am confronted with having to face the fact that my father is a homosexual." Middlebrook and the younger Crouch deny there was such a conversation. In its statement, TBN painted Ford as a disturbed man with a history of relapses into drug addiction, something the Times piece discussed as well. "It is a reprehensible fact of modern life that public persons like Dr Crouch are targets of such dishonest, false and scandalous claims," the statement lamented. "The lifelong ministry of Dr Crouch has been to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ to all the world." But TBN also acknowledged it had agreed to a financial settlement with Ford - the Times put the figure at US$425,000 ($641,000) - rather than go to court to fight his twin allegations of sexual harassment and wrongful termination. "This course of action was deemed less expensive and would avoid the bad publicity, time and effort that it would take to fight the false claims," the statement said. "Dr Crouch reluctantly agreed to this advice with the understanding that the accuser would go away and leave both he and TBN alone forever." It is understandable that TBN has fought so hard to keep even the allegations out of the public eye. The affair's oddly compelling pairing of sex and sanctimony - whether substantiated or not - are a direct reminder of the scandals of the late 1980s that brought down preacher Jimmy Swaggart and Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker, the husband-and-wife team behind the Praise the Lord network. Swaggart was forced to admit he was addicted to pornography and prostitutes. Jim Bakker not only admitted having an affair with an employee, a former Playboy playmate, Jessica Hahn, but was also caught trying to pay her off with US$265,000 ($400,000) from church funds - one of a string of financial improprieties that landed him in prison. TBN shares many of the traits of those earlier televangelist outfits. Crouch and his wife, Jan - who started out as business partners of the Bakkers - like to portray themselves as humble folks doing the Lord's work and giving of themselves as they hope their viewers will give, by sending in financial contributions. Their costumes and studio sets are as gaudy and kitsch as anything the notoriously campy Tammy Faye Bakker came up with. The motif of the station is distinctly regal, with a crest based on the British lion and unicorn (plus a religious dove). Questions have been asked about the money the Crouches have generated and how it has been spent. The Bakkers had tens of thousands of dollars of gold plating in their bathrooms, and air-conditioning in their dog kennel. |

The Crouches bought a US$5 million ($7.5 million) oceanfront home in the California yachting resort of Newport Beach. They gave various explanations, suggesting the property belonged to the church and they would not be living in it, then saying the purchase was proof of the lavish rewards bestowed on them by the Almighty for their good works. Similar lavishness appears to be in order at the couple's private offices, which occupy half of the top floor of TBN's headquarters just off a freeway in Costa Mesa, 20 minutes' drive from Newport Beach in Orange County. The 2438 sq m personal office space is off limits to the public and press, but construction workers who helped to build it have told reporters it includes a bar and sauna, a gym, handcrafted black walnut woodwork and ornate velvet furniture. The money issue has been exacerbated by the Crouch's singular fundraising techniques. They have some stiff competition when it comes to spinning lines to true believers and inducing them to open their wallets. Back in the 1980s, Oral Roberts once told his viewers that God would strike him down if his supporters did not send him US$8 million ($12 million) within a year. The money arrived, and Roberts' life, miraculously, was spared. Crouch's favoured rhetoric appears to be equating his network with the Lord God himself. "If you have been healed or saved or blessed through TBN and have not contributed to [the] station, you are robbing God and will lose your reward in heaven," he said on air in 1997. The Crouches also have a singular line in defensiveness when it comes to criticism of the station - criticism that has spanned many lawsuits and included accusations from rival Christian organisations that TBN is spreading blasphemy. "God, we proclaim death to anything or anyone that will lift a hand against this network and this ministry that belongs to you, God," Crouch said in 1997. A few years earlier, he reacted even more vehemently to critics he characterised as "heresy hunters." "To hell with you!" he ranted during a praise-a-thon in 1991. "Quit blocking God's bridges or God's going to shoot you - if I don't." The Crouches are positively tame compared with Benny Hinn, the network's star performer, who has preached that Adam was a superman who flew to the moon and expressed his belief that one day the dead will be raised by watching TBN from inside their coffins. Describing his frustrations with his enemies, Hinn once expressed regret that the Bible didn't sanction murder. "Sometimes I wish God would give me a Holy Ghost machine gun. I'd blow your head off!" |

Hinn was embroiled in a legal controversy a few years ago when Mario Licciardello, a private investigator he hired to look into his ministry's finances, turned against him and threatened to publicise the dirt he had dug up. The investigator died shortly afterwards, and Hinn moved his ministry from Florida to Texas. Licciardello has now shown up in the homosexual/ sex allegations. The Los Angeles Times found a deposition in which Licciardello quoted Hinn talking about "a sexual relationship that Paul Crouch had with his chauffeur". Hinn also said: "Paul's defence was that he was drunk." Hinn has denied saying these things, but at least one other witness has corroborated them. In the mid-1990s, the Crouches tussled with the Federal Communications Commission over the legality of some of their station licences and only narrowly escaped being yanked off the air. In 1999, they were slapped with a lawsuit after a terminally ill woman from Virginia accused them of ripping off a novel of hers for their commercially successful end-of-the-world movie The Omega Code. The Crouches denied impropriety, but they ended up paying the woman an undisclosed amount of money. What part of this is true? Who is telling the truth? Should we care or cover up or be in denial or if all are lies then who are the liars and what will God do? (Message edited by no_no on January 11, 2007) |

no no, So, you are the one who has been trying to stir up this on the Internet. I knew someone was, now I know who. Surely your husband would have more ethics than to resort to this kind of mud-slinging... but then again if he is part of a certain group this is how they work. For all your Bible talk what you are doing reveals the Word is not in you. You are obviously siding with the Los Angeles Times. But then those who were against Jesus Christ turned to the very ones who were the enemy of God's people to destroy God's Son. What God has been revealing about Christians on factnet is to prepare those who belong to Him who the real enemy is and will be. You and w4g have revealed who you are.... God had me to write about moral n pure that all these Christians who hate those like Carman and Paul and Jan Crouch should wake up, because one day those "Christians" who will be over them will be those like "MNP" and now you and w4g. Hatred burns in your heart against us. I do not hate you but I do grow more and more alarmed by your actions and mnp, as well as those like w4g. Christians need to read how "you" judge and how controlling and intollerant all of you are and how each of you brag about your life in order to foster the appearance of authority so that people will listen to you. Charles for example, now you with a "critic" for a husband. W4G wants to control.... Is she from Texas? I know there is a group out of Texas who has "links" to the LA Times. This group proclaimed that they worked 24/7 to take down TBN. To be honest just referring to the LA Times openly with criticism causes me great dread because they appear to use their power to intimidate and malign Christians. Those Christians who resent funding the Gospel, rather it is giving to church or to a minister side with the world who want to stop this flow of money. But, one day it will be Christians like "no no" who boast about their "connections", will be in charge and the money that once was used to spread the Gospel, will then only be used to help them to "control" Christians who offend them. Those who will be "poor" will be those who refuse them. No no, you are evil. Morally you have no understanding of right and wrong or what is just and unjust. You are therefore immoral--- the only "morality" you have is less than the Pharisees and the teachers of the Law. You work to promote injury and harm. Your posts come from arrogant anger and hostility. To reprint this without knowing what is true is to promote harm to those who are innocent. But this is what you want to do. This is what those who possess not genuine morals do. Those like you have always resorted to harming in this manner because they are driven by the same spirit that drives you. And it is not the Spirit of God. Those who do belong to Jesus Christ need to wake up and recognize that the Bible tells us what the future of man is going to be.... God is now revealing how it will happen and how these Christians who never knew Him will bring this about. |

No no, Let me get this straight.... If a minister is sued then to you they are not to defend themselves but to give to those who are trying to rob them what they ask for! But when TBN did this twice, you then are ready to believe that this is a sign of their guilt! But, if a minister defends himself because they are innocent, then you will argue they are going against the Bible and they are guilty! Is this your definition of ethics? Do you realize that you and your "critic" husband are angry with Carman because of a movie he made seven years ago! You even suggested that this movie has kept your husband from becoming a Christian. Yet, you seem to know so much about different teachings of the Bible. Are you aware of the teaching that forbids a believer from marrying a nonbeliever? Or, if you were both a nonbeliever when you married and you became a Christian afterwards, then did you not read that to win your husband to Jesus, you should become a better wife so that you will not bring disgrace to the Gospel and so that your nonbelieving husband might believe. But, you work to bring disgrace to the Gospel of Jesus Christ by what you do! You and your nonbelieving husband are working together against ministries of the Gospel! What does this tell you? Who is deceiving who? Are you using your husband's "connections" to destroy ministries, because you know he doesn't know the Bible? Or is he a confirmed nonbeliever who wants to destroy ministries and he is using your angry obsession with Carman to do this? Just who is using who? How can you question anyone elses mental state when your actions are insane toward one movie! Does your husband find it as equally impossible to get over all movies he "critiques"? You are using your "husbands" alleged career as a movie critic. W4G is the only one who believes you. But this doesn't surprise me. It is odd how you and she "want" the truth, but never really look too close to just how truthful those like you are being. Should we believe you? Is what you say true? |

AH Kookie77777, you and HFL are refreshing and this is my add in too. no_no I also recieved this trash in my private email not once, but 4 times. Which to me really shows just how sick people like you are, and I now have the main reply email link. So I'm now going to be looking into where this email link comes from. I can't stand sick minded fruit cakes with nothing else better to do than live in a toilette. No wonder you smell so bad nobody's been close enough to flush you, because your stench scares them all away. If I was close enough though I'd flush you in person myself where you belong right with the rest of the sewer rats. Then you and your so called family can all reak!!!! together instead of bringing it all here. I really pity you, and even with Kookie I too am a very happy person, but I can't stand smelly people who live their lives in daily crapeeolla. So if you're the smelly one who sent me that info in my private email. Which I might add is the exact same message then please get lost twinkle toes, and flush yourself. You're a sick twinkie with no fillings inside. |

If it is true then don't you think the guy has enough to worry about without people talking about it to boot! The world may laugh and mock, but hey, everyone messes up at some time and as Christians, we should be supportive. The guy provides a service and we shouldn't really even talk about these things because sin lives in our flesh and to God there is no degree of sin. We are encouraged to live clean and pure, but if some fall there is an advocate and that is Jesus Christ. Talking about it is just gossip, unless you are talking about it for a reason other than judgement. Where there is judgement there should also be merciful and it is not merciful to rub dirt in someone's face when they are already down. |

Yeah, what is the whole point of posting this story? What is it supposed to do? Who is this supposed to help? If something is amiss in a ministry let the Lord reveal it in His timing. He allows several opportunities to go by for people to repent. If the person continually refuses to repent after several opportunities, then the Lord will remove His protection and the person may literally and figuratively be caught with his pants down. But again, that is for the Lord to reveal. We do not need to escalate it. I am not a fan of anyone who loves to air another child of God's laundry. The world does a great job of that on their own, without our help. But then again, even the world supposedly believes in innocent until proven guilty. Another thing, if you notice the article was written 2 years ago and most of the stuff is listed as having happened in 1996 or 1997. If it was true, how do you know they have not repented and been restored by now? You don't. One last thing, the LA Times is not the final word on anything in my book. |

You need to check your motives because as a Christian I feel I must warn you and tell you if you have forgotten. Yes, you are right getagrip, that is why so many in here fight to protect him and his Ministry because he is of great value in saving the lost in this country of ours. I know Carman can handle it, because he is fully aware of how the devil works. What I mostly fight for are the innocent ones who have just received Christ at one of his concerts, if they google Carman they will find this place and they won't be able to handle it and that is where confusion will come in for them..... How do you protect them?? |

I just wanted to share John Hagee's weekly devotional with you all....... I just thought it was really good... Weekly Devotional People who constantly complain, gripe, whine, and practice the “art” of total misery are infected with a poor self-image. They are deeply insecure! They lack confidence in themselves and in their ability. They are afraid to make decisions, so they blame other people for everything that goes wrong. They, of course, are never at fault. They have a bully personality because they are scared to death inside. When people criticize you unjustly, what they are really saying is, “I feel rotten inside. I don’t like the real me, so I’ll complain about everyone else so no one will look closely enough at me to discover the real me.” The Bible has much to say about our attitude: · Proverbs 237: “For as he thinks in his heart, so is he.” · Isaiah 26:3: “You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You.” · Romans 12:2: “And do not be conformed to this world, but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind.” · Philippians 2:5: “Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ.” · 2 Timothy 1:7: “God has not given us a spirit of fear but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” Attitudes don’t have to be permanent! You have the ability to choose between negative or positive, discouraging or encouraging. If your mouth spews out a perpetual stream of negative comments, you are probably suffering from polluted thinking, and you must choose to cleanse yourself of it. You can do that by replacing negative thoughts with positive, godly thoughts. Remember that you are a child of God, And royal blood of heaven is flowing in your veins. You have been created a little lower than the angels. You are an heir and joint heir with Jesus Christ. You are loved! You are special! Keep in mind: A man is not finished when he is defeated; he is finished when he quits. So don’t whine… It’s time to shine! - Pastor John Hagee |

The point, is the truth and not being manipulated. The point, is that christians with a cult factor will overlook serious sins or compromise in the name of an illusion and that is not Biblical. This is a cult info and cult discussion board. Some christians here have a cult type of belief and religiousness and a shame based blind loyalty which they believe is more spiritual somehow. They that worship God, must worship Him in spirit and in truth. How typical to veil a threat of the old "you will reap what you sow" rhetoric when trying to make someone feel guilty for wanting leaders to be worthy, by Biblical standards to be trusted and respected as such. If the Lord wants to clean his house and if he does not want his followers and worshippers to be tricked, then any exposure should serve as righteous action and responsible thinking and communication. If its not true, then Paul and others will be rewarded and increased or healed. I most assuredly asked the Lord before I put that information up and I asked for counsel too. It is true the LA Times does not have a heart for ministry and is antagonistic towards the things of God in some respects. They don't know better. But the people who have reported the facts, even if their hearts are bitter or angry, are still reporting facts. Should they have a bar in their in their private office? Should Paul ever be drunk? Is every statement in that article a complete lie? I think those words that John Hagee speaks( and is repeating that others have said in the past that he is using), are terrific. I don't think it is terrific that he is 100lbs overweight, is extremely condemning, very sarcastic and demeaning in some of his broadcasts, or that he features health programs when he is very unhealthy himself, and that some of the contributors here have a religious spirit that would dictate to never dare to think critically of him because he pastors or he is ordained. That is not like the Apostle Paul or Proverbs and it is not a safe and mentally healthy spirituality. Clean men and women can take accountability and questions and even accusations and if they are christians they can assuredly muster a godly responsiveness or forgiveness and show love and humility. If they are guilty they can confess and get help and be a good example. Does the New Testament speak and think critically of believers and ministers? How does it model or teach us to think? Those scriptures you posted are some of the very best for encouragement and stability in trusting God and realizing our hope and his valuing of us. Life is not a positive thinking, get high on ideals and goals with affirmations - party, every day. That has its place and its a joyous and wonderful place, and then grief, anger, reality and confrontative, earnest, honest challenge and fruit inspection has its normal and Biblical place too. |

No we don't overlook serious sins or compromise in the name of an illusion no_no. What we do that makes us follow after Christ is not speak forth trash in gossip. If you have such a bad taste in your mouth with this ministry... Then take it right to them one on one and not bring it all here in an open forum. There in is where we differ no_no You are a stone thrower, and we couldn't care less about your gossip accept to call you on it. You bring the response from us which is not anger, but pity for your constant confrontative attitude which is not a challenge no_no. It is a sickness when you take the Biblical scriptures and try to twist them to your way of thinking. To take your problems right to that person is what is right in the Bible, and not throwing your nasty gossip here on a publis forum. There in is the constant sickness no_no. I agree 100% with mercy_me You are hurting Gods people killing Ministries not helping them. Just keep your gossip to yourself, and throw your stones back down on the ground no_no. Mercy Me, Aren't you being a stone thrower by refering to me as one? You don't like to walk in the truth or be in your right mind to a great extent do you? Why have a standard for me, when you won't for anyone else and when you assuredly admire folks with serious problems and witchcraft in their lives? Because I won't think or respond the way you would like me to, thereby satisfying you urge to control with positive thinking or famous quotes, then I am sinning and am a horrible person? Do you think that John Hagee throws stones? Supposedly he is allowed to do it, because of the position he holds in a church? You seem a bit mixed up in your motives and your beliefs. However, the most important thing is love and when you move to love then you are being a blessing and a light. Yet, to love God, the Bible makes it clear that we worship Him, must worship Him in spirit and in truth. Many of the women who post here repeatedly, have a Christian image that they put in the public arena, but like you, they have a nasty temper and believe they are more spiritual than they assuredly are. Not being a part of Wingsaglows private email group, or being on this blog as one of the three specific groups that seem to post reoccurently, I can only go by what the Holy Spirit shows or by the words and actions in the hundreds of posts. I notice that Wingsaglow constantlhy refers to gossip and trys to condemn or place shame on others with that topic or sin. She does it here, privately and lies about herself and then projects her own faults on what she feels is an expendable or threatening person either one. Do you ever go onto satellite broadcasts? Have you heard a christian psychologist whose name is Townsend? Last week he was doing a presentation on 'blame' and said with conviction and correction that it is "a sickness" that a person just will not, will never admit that they are wrong or that their thinking is wrong. Who can you think of here in Carman's Life Land, that will not, ever, admit to being wrong or even the possibility that their thinking is wrong? Is the person that Carman is involved with the wrong person and is he once again listening to the counsel of a person, that he thinks can't be wrong, instead of hearing from God himself? Hope to all hope, that he has heard the very voice of God and has confirmations that do not come from people alone or people that he is co-dependently making responsible for the outcomes of his dreams. I felt the Lord told me that he wouldn't meet the right woman for another year. Why would I think that? Its not a thought, it is answer to a blunt question put before the Lord wanting to know how the Lord might feel and what his plans would be, stepping aside from the obvious or the religious. |

Wow, speaking of nasty tempers?????? I just wanted to know why the devotional I posted by John Hagee made you soooooo mad? Evidently there is something in your life that this ministered too. Don't attack him. I put this in here. I like Pastor Hagee because he isn't afraid to step on toes so that people can be saved, healed and set free from whatever is hindering them from being all that God has called them to be. Sometimes if things step on our toes it is something that needs addressing in our own lives. He never says he is perfect no one is. Are you? Can you say everything your saying and say that you are perfect? He has stepped on my toes before but I am glad that he did because It made me take a good look at myself and know what I needed to change. Just like any good Pastor will do. If a Pastor just gives us cake and cookies all the time we would never grow in the Lord. (well we would grow but that would probably be in the hind quarters!) In your posts you seem so angry all the time. You stay in attack mode constantly. It is so hard to talk to you. "And then you say why can't you be encouraging to me?" Because I know that I will be dancing around land minds with you. Why I said you were a stone thrower was, because that is all I can see you doing from your posts. You are constantly attacking someone. If I try to be encouraging, prayerful, firm, caring or sharing. You are going to attack me. I will never ever say the right thing. I bet if I stood here and agreed with you on something you would still attack me. Am I right? You said(You seem a bit mixed up in your motives and your beliefs. However, the most important thing is love and when you move to love then you are being a blessing and a light. Yet, to love God, the Bible makes it clear that we worship Him, must worship Him in spirit and in truth.) See what a good post this could be. But you have to add a zinger either before or after anything awesome... And you always write in a hazy blue?? Why? What are you trying to do with that? I don't read half of what you write because it hurts my eyes. I just feel that you do that on purpose. Maybe to create a haze? |

You said(Is the person that Carman is involved with the wrong person and is he once again listening to the counsel of a person, that he thinks can't be wrong, instead of hearing from God himself?) I don't know the answer to this and neither do you. God has a perfect will and plan for our lives. God has also given us the freedom to choose. I pray that Carman will follow God's perfect will and not his flesh so that he will not be hindered to do all that God has called him to do and be. And I pray that he is seeking counsel from a Godly pastor who will hold him accountable in helping him make the right choice. And I pray that he will find that special someone that God has hand picked for him who will help him to fulfill the call God has on his life. And I pray that she will have the backbone and shoulders to handle all this crap that is constantly going on.... Because whomever she is, someone will have something to say. One way or another. Being single is definitely hindering him from being all that God has called him to be..... That is all we can do is pray for him and her. But whomever he chooses is between him, her and God. If he makes the wrong choice and his Ministry goes to hell in a hand basket. Then you have the choice to either support his Ministry or not and God will raise someone else up to take his place to accomplish what God wants to do. You know this, Carman knows this, and we all know this. Man this gets so old..... Same chapter a different verse a little bit louder and a little bit worse..... This sure makes you not want to have a Ministry of your own...Pray for him, encourage him that is all I can tell you to do. I apologize for being sarcastic but we just keep going around the same mountain over and over and over again... It is not accomplishing anything. Are you not exhausted by all of this yet?? I am, I am going back to bed... God Bless |
