As the definition of a Gnostic is: one who possesses first-hand, revealed, experiential, Divine KNOWLEDGE of God, then it stands to reason, if one believes what is said in the NT, that Jesus must have been a Gnostic! Why, if this is the case, did (and do) the so-called 'orthodox' churches condemn Gnosticism out-of-hand. I understand that there have always been various 'pseudo-gnostic' sects claiming such Divine Knowledge of God, but the churches tend to reject any and ALL such claims, without even investigating them. This was exactly what happened in Jesus' own time - he was murdered for claimimg to have Divine Knowledge of God by the religious people - the Pharisees and Sadducees! |

"Why, if this is the case, did (and do) the so-called 'orthodox' churches condemn Gnosticism out-of-hand." Because the Gnostics considered the resurection to be metaphorical rather than literal. That's it, that is where the discrepency lay. Sure Jesus could be considered a gnostic but that does not mean that we all ought to be according to Orthodox xtianity. Jesus has to be unique, after all he is the son grand cosmic doo-dad. |

Frankenchrist, I think the answer lies in the fact that the Gnostics rejected a hierarchical institutionalized money making business, with a worldly priesthood setting the rules. |
