I was sad to see that Hutnick’s closed down. Hutnick’s was that hamburger joint in Yelm where locals frequented, and where you could get a ham and egg breakfast for under four dollars. It was a great place if you’re short on cash, or if you simply had a few hours to while away doing nothing. You could sit at those vinyl-upholstered booths, read the newspaper, and drink coffee all morning or all afternoon, if you wanted to. The waitresses there didn’t mind. Neither did the kid who ran the place, Hutnick Jr. His father had opened Hutnick’s after World War II, a tiny shack of a restaurant filled with plants and tall windows overlooking an empty lot across the street. I liked Hutnick’s because very few “masters” went there. Instead of starry-eyed new agers, you would see workman or farmers and old folk clothed in overalls. At Hutnick’s I discovered the soul of Yelm. They were people of divine practicality and sublime ingenuity who had no understanding whatsoever about the Ramtha community. How refreshing. The first time I walked in there I ordered a Coney Island Hot Dog with onions and cheese, a pack of Pall-Mall cigarettes, and a 55 cent cup of coffee. What fun. In the back room you could play a game of Ms Packman, or drop a quarter in the juke box, or sit there and comb the classified ads for a job opening. |
