A couple months back, a mom of a cute little girl in my son's class told me of a conversation her girl had with my boy. The two 5-year-olds discussed how they were very similar and compatible, and came away quite content with that conclusion.

As a Reform Jew, I have always taught my children tolerance of the religion of others. Who are we to know what another human's truths are? This is very important for my kids to understand considering their dad is a non-Jew.

So in that context, I innocently thought how proud I was of my boy, first of all discussing religion at all, and secondly being so tolerant and in his child brain wanting to see similarities with his classmate.

I am much uninformed really of Mormons, though I did read Under the Banner of Heaven, and came away mesmerized and astounded. But I had not heard of a little snippit I read here on FactNet, something to the effect that Mormons think they are the true Jews.

Does anyone know more about that?

I think people's desire to be known as Jews stems from G-d choosing us. People mistakenly believe that being the "chosen people" means that we are better than anyone else or that we are the only ones going to Heaven. Actually all it means is that G-d wants us to be a nation of priests, it is to be our profession.

So all these people thinking it means something else are all rushing to be the "new Jews." Just look at several threads on this website. Other than Mormons, there are multiple christian and quasi-christian groups all claiming to be "true Jews." At the same time, they claim that the real Jews aren't Jews or have been replaced by themselves.

Yes, Mormons call those outside of their religion Gentiles.

Yaakov, I wish you would post your statement on the am/sc threads. I doubt they will listen, but if even one did, it would be worth it.

Mormons believe that the priesthood was taken from the earth. That Joseph Smith was chosen to 'restore it' and that he received it from an angel or Aaron (can't remember which right now), then gave it to some of his fellows who believed him. Since they believe they alone have the priesthood on earth, this makes them the 'true Jews'. They claim the melchezedik (?) and arronic priesthoods, and only they can give it by 'laying on of hands'.

I think chesed is talking more along the lines of the story that Mormons hold too that here in America the native Indians are from line of family- blood line- of Christ.

This story was written by an author who never got to see it published -or so it goes- but was stored in a chest in a widows home. Joseph Smith "acquired" it and years later when the family of the author heard the familiar story the Joseph Smith clan was speaking-they went public about it- this is well documented. This story and JS was traced back to a time when he had access to this fictional about the Indians arriving to America.

JS and family was known prior to this to be get rich quick treasure hunters etc. Beyond the fact that this religion is all made up, in my opinion, there is a Truth from which we can measure- a standard by which we can model our life. It isn't a set of things we HAVE to do that will bring the tangible and spiritual world together. If the two exist and I believe they do, then they already exist, even without having been aware of it before.

The beauty of Children is that they can be mad and play together minuets later. They hold no grudges. They don't know why their useful. Some place along the line we learned how to use them. Now we cherish the children and the memory of a time when we were children. Children can know love and so can we. It's really a renewing that takes place to find that joy again. Loving everyone despite what they believe, or what they are capable of doing to you. There is usually one kind of person who can do this and as far as I know very few people how has done this flawlessly. Never the less this is a greater model. To say no person can know the Truth is an incomplete sentence if you ask me but this is my opinion. God Bless.

Keep in mind that when Mormons recieve their Patriarchal Blessing (From the Stake Patriarch, usually around the age they should be preparing to go on a mission) they are given a "revelation" about which "tribe" of Israel they supposedly belong to.

When I was a young adult, I was told it ran both ways--on the one hand I was told that "being of the tribe of Ephraim" was my designation within the "spiritual Israel". On the other hand, I was subsequently told by one of the Quorum of the Seventy that the appointments to specific tribes reflected the "fact" that all Mormons are actually unwitting/unknown descendants of Jewry and called by divine providence to become Mormons to "fulfill" the alleged "covenant of Heavenly Father to restore his People/Church".

At the time of recieving this "revelation" I was amazed at how well the Patriarch knew my soul--even though I'd only been a "member of the Church" for two months (I was 18). He knew my passions, my gifts, my concerns....

It didn't occur to me until years later that he could have known *all* of this without ever having appealed to GOD at all--after all, I *grew* *up* just blocks from the man's house. Mormon or not, "Patriarch" Beal had been watching me since I was very small--no divine intervention needed....

In His Grace, miki

The relationship between Mormonism and Jews? NONE. Daniel and Ezekiel state (paraphrased) that a true prophet will teach the difference between clean and unclean, holy and unholy and about the Mo(h)adim, or Feast Days, of God.

They are similar only in that both moved away from the Spirit and into the ritualistic application of the law.
