Arron, I don't think that the church chooses prophets. I'm no expert on Momonism (note correct spelling) but I would say that the church considers Joseph Smith to be the great LDS prophet and there have been none since. Significan figures in the church past and present but not prophets per se. I have a gaggle of Mormon relatives, I could ask one of them about it. |

arron, the membership votes according to the church. The mormons actually always have 12 apostles. The head one now is Hinckley who is considered their prophet. Brigham Young was the second one after js was killed. The new prophet is chosen from one of the 12. The reason you hear so much about the fundamentalist mormons who still practice polygamy is they broke away from the main church (including js's wife Emma and their two sons) because js promised their oldest son he would be the next prophet of the church. The fundamentalists are following the real teachings of js, and consider themselves the true lds. Polygamy was actually stopped when the mormons wanted Utah to be a state, so the prophet at that time conveniently had a 'revelation from the Lord'. |

You won't hear even the mormons call Hinckley their prophet. They prefer to call him the president of the church. The other's in the 12 are called the 'first presidency of the church'. |
