I think what you have written about the pyrates confraternity in this article is mostly based on your ignorance of the issues involved. I would however not blame you because you are simply writing about 'what you know not' as also did many sections of the press and other individuals including members of the public before you. This is because the problem really is confusing the activities of other groups or 'cults' as you put it, with the Pyrates Confraternity. Some of these groups abound on the campuses and some even call themselves by the name 'The Pyrates' etc. Over the years the pyrates confraternity has tried as much as it could to disassociate itself from these sinister groups. The early origins of these groups can be traced back to around 1972 when the Pyrates Confraternity expelled some of their members from the confraternity for activities unbecoming of a good citizen. These expelled members left and later set up their own group known as ‘The Buccaneer Confraternity’. Since then other mushrooms groups have sprung up, all trying to attain the status of the Pyrates Confraternity. And the only way they think they could do this is by exhibiting violence against their fellow men and killing and maiming others around them. This is amongst other things due to their own erroneous beliefs that the Pyrates Confraternity was and is able to attain and maintain its reputable and respectful position in the society and the various institutions of higher learning in Nigeria and abroad through the medium of ‘violence’ and ‘intimidation’. Hence this mentality has pervaded all their actions both on and off the various institutions. You said in your article that you were attacked and injected with poison while you were at the university. Are you doubly sure and certain that this action was carried out by members of the Pyrates Confraternity? I am a former member of the Pyrates Confraternity who have since ceased to be a member. I left on my own accord even though majority of the members did not want me to leave. But I have to leave for various personal reasons amongst which is the fact that I now have many more personal commitments and the need to devote more or rather all of my attention to my new found During all my years as a member of the confraternity, we never had any occasion when the members go out of their way to attack anyone or exhibit violence against other students. Yes, there are no doubts some occasions of violence but this is only when we have to respond to unprovoked attack against us by these mushroom cult-groups. But when the outcome of such clashes become public, the only name you will be hearing on everyone’s lips is ‘The Pyrates have done this’. I know this as a fact because I and other members have been victims of unprovoked attacks by these groups on many occasions both on and off campus. It might interest you to know that these mushroom cult-groups have no agenda or purpose other than acting against and finding various means to attack members of the Pyrates Confraternity –physically or otherwise. Surprisingly enough the leadership of the confraternity did not until now see them as a threat to the reputation of the confraternity that needs to be dealt with decisively and terminally, probably due to having so many other national agendas on their hands which often prevents them from taking decisive action. One only hopes it is not too late before a final solution is found for these menace. |

Mr Delly, It will be intersting to learn the period of time that you were a Pyrate both on campus and outside of it. This will help to identify specific incidences of violence that have been attributed to the Pyrates. The fact is ALL GROUPS are subjected to unprovoked attacks both by Pyrates and other groups and vice versa. It is no good claiming innocence of all acts of violence because we all know this this simply cannot be true. The Pyrates have their fair share of miscreants (after all that is why you have to expel members) and pretenders, just as other groups have. All groups expel members who err, although the situation today is worse because all say that they have left the campusses and labelled those within the campus, lubbers, jus and say they are not members. In their hearts those left within the campuses are Pyrates, Buccaneers, Vikings, Eiye. Axemen, Maphites etc. They initiate members, use the same terms and operate as they know with no supervision form the formal bodies. We cannot continue to ignore the real problem and claim that we are innocent of any misdemeanour. This holier than thou attitude remains the crux of the problem with the Pyrates (both past and present)and is beginning to spread to other groups. Wake up and smell the blood, after all the way it is going now it is inevitable that the smell will get stronger. pcnemesis |

It is not really good for someone or a group of person to deny the activities he had passed through.Although i am a buccaneer, but you cannot tell that the pyrates dont take part in physical engagements against other confraternities. The only thing we should be campaining now is for the people that still remain on campuses to stop the violence and probably each school authority should try and register them, for easy monitoring. Thanks |

I cannot imagine the immaturity of some of you frat men. There's alot more to life than violence, i think you all just need a re-education, or should i say reorientation. and i'm refering to all frat men. Anyway Greetings to you all, be u an axeman, marphite, buka, airlord, kk, vikky and nuff respect to all the other frats that i didn't mention, i am a world airlord from the great oluyole . i'm currently resident in england, and i stumbled across this forum this morning, and to be honest i'm impressed with most of what i've read. i think we all need to come together to make confraternities a positive force in the society. we all know that the situation in Nigeria is depreciating by the minute, and we the educated and proven rugged ones that are supposed to fight for the rights of the masses are foolishly fighting amongst ourselves. Like rugged outlaw dawgg said confraternities in the civilised world are a force to reckon with, why can't we in Nigeria emulate such behaviour? We really need to get our priorities right, all those rugged men from the different frats whose lives were so foolishly cut short due to our inability to comprehend what is right from what is so terribly wrong, i'm sure you'll all agree that it was not worth the fuss. Guys, you are all highly rugged, lets test our wits like real men, lets stop the violence and start the reconstruction of all the confraternities. from there we can make Nigeria a better and greater nation than any of us can imagine. |

Pyrates have submerged all their decks (campus branches) contrary to popular belief. If anyone comes to you in any school and tells you they are having a pyratical activity that person must be a pretender. Has anyone noticed that NO DOCUMENTED EVIDENCE of violence as brought against a member of Pyrates confraternity since they submerged all campus branches? The last time policemen arrrested Memebers of the PC was during Abacha's regime and the case was taken to the Oputa panel for redressing If you have any evidence or even suspicion of any pyrates activities on ANY campus please post on this message board and it wil be investigated. Probably at one point in time PC involved itself in inter-group wrangling on campuses (the name cult by the way in my humble opinion is a misnomer). But the truth remains the PC HAS INDEED pulled out of campuses |

Esteemed Gentlemen, I salute you .Anyone who has passed thru the Initiation Ordeal is indeed a Man [who no come no go no wetin we see]. Be that as it may , it has been established that "I no gree dey tear shirt". I've read your various comments and come to one conclusion: most of us would wish the Young Chaps coming after us to have a better lease of life devoid of violence, maiming, and pain. We are all battle tested in one form or the other. The issue is this; having tasted the two sides of Fraternal life, is it still fashionable to encourage our youths to continue joining these Frats. The founding Fathers as it were had noble objectives , but as in human activities, their vision was derailed when opportunists came on board hence in more ways than one, we are victims of the monsters we helped create. Gentlemen, I paid my dues like other Frat men while in school and lost two dear friends to Frat activities, one of whom's mother[a widow] is mentally derailed today because that young man was her only Son and a Lawyer in the making. Who knows , he may have been a Notary Public of high repute today [ again this is wishful thinking because the man in question is long dead and perhaps forgotten by most people- even the so-called Brothers in the Frat]. Lastly it behoves us as Esteemed Genlemen to refrain from mudslinging and the like. My stance is this: Every man is entitled to join the Fraternity of his choice and should be respected for that [ Choice is a fundamental human right , however it should be applied wisely] . Project Nigeria{should be geared towards harmonising our various strenghts in the quest to keep our Campuses safe for our youths and children and not encouraging violence and the like by funding these Students secretly , attend Initi}ations, Parties, etc. while denouncing them publicly [ who is fooling who]. Thankyou once again for giving me this privilege to address you Estemmed Gentlemen.} |

God bless you ma bother-man, Zodiac and may He continue to enrich you with wisdom and prosperity. From the profound of ma heart I have said this jeffy prayer. If you will be meticulous and scrutinize the write-ups on this baord, you will find out that most of peace fighters are no longer coming to this baord which I presume was instigated by what they think. That most of the guys here now, are more of under-graduate and or dropped out because of the level of thinking the kinda things they always come here to say. Go thru most of the recent messages, you will find out that about 90% of them have nothing to write home about; full of malice, spite, hate, and devilish. Believe me, you might be motivated now but because of what you might be seeeing here soon, you will be demoralized to continue.. Man, I ain't got much but to encourage you to continue and I ask God to give you the strenght and wisdom to make impacts on the individuals here. And always remember that there is ruminaration for every deed, be it good or bad. This' mankind that won't stop fighting for mankind...till death... |
