Jerry Fallwell is just another self-righteous southern, fire and brimestone, right-wing evangelist who thinks he knows everything. Don't pay people like that any mind.

No I am not self-righteous, nor christian hating. Yes I am an athiest, yes I do want to see/hear FACTS, not stories and I am a fierce skeptic. I tell it like it is. Just listen/read about some of the things he says:

If you're not a born-again Christian, you're a failure as a human being.
-- Rev. Jerry Falwell (attributed: source unknown)

This is probably as bad a day as the court has had on social issues since "Roe v. Wade."
-- Jerry Falwell, reacting to the Supreme Court's ruling in the Texas sodomy case, "Lawrence v. Texas," wherein the high court upheld an individual's (or a couple's) right to privacy; "It is a promise of the Constitution that there is a realm of personal liberty which the government may not enter," said Justice Anthony M. Kennedy, for the majority in an opinion "as broad in its constitutional vision as any ever issued by the court," wrote Charles Lane for The Washington Post; in his dissent, Justice Antonin Scalia, an extremist Evangelical Christian, complained that the justices voting to uphold the right to privacy were creating a new constitutional right, that they were not upholding the Constitution, quoted from "Planned Parenthood Federal Action Report" (July, 2003) ††

I had a student ask me, "Could the savior you believe in save Osama bin Laden?" Of course, we know the blood of Jesus Christ can save him, and then he must be executed.
-- Rev. Jerry Falwell, citen in Cary McMullen, "Falwell: Now Is the Time for Gospel," in the Lakeland (Florida) Ledger (November 12, 2001), quoted from Randy Cassingham, This is True (18 November 2001). Falwell added: "We visit prisoners on death row, and some of them are saved, but we believe their sentences should be carried out because they have a debt to society."

God continues to lift the curtain and allow the enemies of America to give us probably what we deserve.
-- Rev. Jerry Falwell, blaming civil libertarians, feminists, homosexuals, and abortion rights supporters for the terrorist attacks of Tuesday, September 11, 2001, to which Rev. Pat Robertson agreed, quoted from John F. Harris, "God Gave U.S. 'What We Deserve,' Falwell Says," The Washington Post (September 14, 2001

The ACLU's got to take a lot of blame for this.
-- Rev. Jerry Falwell, blaming civil libertarians for the terrorist attacks of Tuesday, September 11, 2001, to which Rev. Pat Robertson again agreed, quoted from AANEWS #958 by American Atheists (September 14, 2001)

And, I know that I'll hear from them for this. But, throwing God out successfully with the help of the federal court system, throwing God out of the public square, out of the schools. The abortionists have got to bear some burden for this because God will not be mocked. And when we destroy 40 million little innocent babies, we make God mad. I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People for the American Way -- all of them who have tried to secularize America -- I point the finger in their face and say, "You helped this happen."
-- Rev. Jerry Falwell, blaming civil libertarians, feminists, homosexuals, and abortion rights supporters for the terrorist attacks of Tuesday, September 11, 2001, quoted from John F. Harris, "God Gave U.S. 'What We Deserve,' Falwell Says," The Washington Post (September 14, 2001)

I sincerely believe that the collective efforts of many secularists during the past generation, resulting in the expulsion from our schools and from the public square, has left us vulnerable.
-- Rev. Jerry Falwell, after the 700 Club broadcast wherein he had blamed civil libertarians, feminists, homosexuals, and abortion rights supporters for the terrorist attacks of Tuesday, September 11, 2001, speaking to The New York Times, quoted from Dick Meyer, "Holy Smoke," CBS News (September 15, 2001)

I put all the blame legally and morally on the actions of the terrorist, [but America's] secular and anti-Christian environment left us open to our Lord's [decision] not to protect. When a nation deserts God and expels God from the culture ... the result is not good.
-- Rev. Jerry Falwell, backpedaling amidst criticism of his statement blaming civil libertarians, feminists, homosexuals, and abortion rights supporters for the terrorist attacks of Tuesday, September 11, 2001, quoted from John F. Harris, "God Gave U.S. 'What We Deserve,' Falwell Says," The Washington Post (September 14, 2001)

I hope I live to see the day when, as in the early days of our country, we won't have any public schools. The churches will have taken them over again and Christians will be running them. What a happy day that will be!
-- Rev. Jerry Falwell, America Can Be Saved, 1979 pp. 52-53, from Albert J. Menendez and Edd Doerr, The Great Quotations on Religious Freedom

AIDS is not just God's punishment for homosexuals; it is God's punishment for the society that tolerates homosexuals.
-- Jerry Falwell (attributed: source unknown)

The idea that religion and politics don't mix was invented by the Devil to keep Christians from running their own country.
-- Rev. Jerry Falwell, Sermon, July 4, 1976

There is no separation of church and state. Modern U.S. Supreme Courts have raped the Constitution and raped the Christian faith and raped the churches by misinterpreting what the Founders had in mind in the First Amendment to the Constitution.

I do not believe the homosexual community deserves minority status. One's misbehavior does not qualify him or her for minority status. Blacks, Hispanics, women, etc., are God-ordained minorities who do indeed deserve minority status.
-- Rev. Jerry Falwell, USA Today Chat, quoted from The Religious Freedom Coalition, "The Two faces of Jerry Falwell"

We're fighting against humanism, we're fighting against liberalism ... we are fighting against all the systems of Satan that are destroying our nation today ... our battle is with Satan himself.
-- Rev. Jerry Falwell (attributed: source unknown)

Billy Graham is the chief servant of Satan.
-- Rev. Jerry Falwell (attributed: source unknown)

The ACLU is to Christians what the American Nazi party is to Jews.
-- Rev. Jerry Falwell (attributed: source unknown)

The list goes on of rediculious quotes and the pattern is constant.

"He that is without sin and perfect cast the first stone"

Lets just say Falwell is a bad salesman for Jesus using these remarks.

Let's also say you are bad salesman for being anti-Christ(Jesus said in the Bible"He that is not with me is against me) and bad at selling atheism using some of your remarks.

I am not selling athiesm or attacking Christianity. I seek the truth. People like Fallwell, Robertson, Tilton make christians look intolerant and hateful when they make such statements.

I have met him. He was aman of very deep convictions. Such convictions are missing today in many who claim to be leaders. Talk about truth. They say we must be tolerant and truth does not matter. The very same people who preach tolerance are themselves totally intolerant. They can be selectively intolerant. This does not apply to christians. Christians are labelled as Intolerant. When truth is substituted for "Politically Correct Telerance", our society is in big danger.Rome had a great civilization and immorality destroyed it. Immorality is rampant in our country today.Whatever had happened on 911 is a judgement call upon the USA. Hollywood contributed to this hatred of our culture and our values. Alquaida, Hamas and other terrorist organizations are targeting USA primarily because of our permissive lifestyles,Hollywood, our drug culture, demand for homosexual marriages, pornography etc.

When there is a decay of truth, we are headed for deep trouble. We need a Moral voice to set things straight in our society. In those days, prophets were stoned. It is not different today.

Jesus said the world would know you're a Christian by the LOVE you show.

That is what Jesus said.

And by the "world" he means non-believers.

So it's sort of fascinating to watch the news --"the world" -- reports roll in:

"Founder of Moral Majority"
"Controversy with PTL"
"Claimed a Telly Tubb Was Gay"
"Blamed Gays,Lesbians and Feminists for 9-11 Terrorist Attack"

I can just imagine Jerry in front of Jesus, all pleased with himself and Jesus saying, "Oh, Jerry, you missed the whole point..."

Jesus said,"You will be hated for my name's sake". Dr. Falwell was hated too. He hated the sin. But, loved the sinner. The man was critical, but his words were full of love and compassion.Telly tubb was a homosexual. Many news media announced this before Dr. Falwell made a comment about this. He only repeated what others said.God would have already said," Come in my good and faithful servant". This will distinguish himself from charlatans like Copeland as Copeland never talks about Sin.

Falwell was never hated for "Jesus' Sake"-- that is a myth.

Falwell was hated for "being OBNOXIOUS for Jesus' sake."

There is a HUGE difference.

Remember, Jesus ate with the "sinners" and they LOVED Jesus -- he offered them grace, mercy and access to God through Himself, something the "law" and the temples of the day did not.

The idea of "loving the sinner but hating the sin" is a cop out and is NOT found in scripture.

(Not sure why you brought the Copelands into this?)

And the Tellytubby went into therapy with Ted haggard and is now an EX-gay and happily married with two children and living in Nebraska.

Telly tubb was a homosexual.

Is this an assuption based on your observation or do you have some evidence to support your accusation? What's your take on Bert and Ernie?

just kidding, sort of ....

Do you make the same kind of assumptions about the people who come into your church? If they dress a certain way, act a certain way ... they must be gay? Does it end there? Maybe you can detect other sins just by looking at someone?

He was a man and men make mistakes. He always rubbed me the wrong way but I have to take into account his age and the location in which he was raised-Very conservative, Southern Baptist..

He also called Ellen DeGeneres- Ellen Degenerate...Jesus would not approve!

Hopefully ministers can learn from his mistakes...

I think when Billy Graham goes to glory, there will be pretty much an outpouring of praise. Other than his "Jews" comment during Nixon's reign--which he promptly repented of and was forgiven by Jewish leaders -- I think he had had a spotless record.

I read many years ago (forgot who said it) that anytime you mix the gospel with ANYTHING (social issues, politics, etc) then God sort of "withdraws" because His Word/Message is pure unto itself and that is ALL we were ever told to preach or proclaim.

I didn't really write that correctly, but the idea always struck me. So Graham focused on the gospel in the same way Mother Theresa, like her not, focused on the poor and they leave this planet with people focusing on how they manifested God's character.

Preach the gospel always; use words if necessary. --St. Francis

i must admit rachel that i have made the same comment about ellen.

there have been many times in my life that i have done things like that.

is there a time when we need to speak out about the conduct of others?

i think there is, as does everyone on this message board, or they wouldn't be here.

what we need to be able to do is separate the conduct from the individual.
i am just as guilty as anyone else of not doing that.

i apologize for how that has affected anyone here.

fatherofaking, I agree with your remorse (on behalf of Falwell said) about the comment "Ellen DeGenerate."

When Falwell first coined it -- and smirked -- I felt sick to my stomach because I felt that if Falwell REALLY believe Ellen was going to hell, then how could he possibly make light of that fact? Plus, it was a nasty thing to say. I remember seeing Ellen interviewed about it -- classy lady and so was her response -- and she said she was hurt by what he said and what he said actually said everything about what he believed.

Also tragic about the Telly Tubbie===but I never saw him interviewed...

I agree with you Bachman. I am really going through some heavy thinking about the religious right. I don't remember Jesus commissioning us to go out and mock and condemn sinners and fight with them for pre-eminence in this fallen world. This is more like the making of another vicious Holy Roman Empire.

This is interesting....

I'm writing a book about a cult, The Church of the Risen Christ that Larry Hill headed up from 1968-1979 in Windsor, Ohio. It was part of the Jesus Movement, back when everyone lived in community. The All Saved Freak Band (ASFB) came from the group.

Anyway, I've promoted ASFB music for years (they came OUT of the cult but were believers) and all the band members and former members of the cult had allowed me to tell their story---horrible abuse of adults and children, physical, mental and sexual.

But the interesting part is that the fellow who was a "roadie" for the band and got out later joined Jerry Falwell's group and knew Jerry VERY well. And this fellow is allowing me to use his name in the book, which should help with media interest!

So, regardless of what we think of Jerry -- and I was no fan -- he did provide some shelter to one very messed up man who escaped one of the most brutal cults of the 1970s -- worse than The Way and Children of God.
