I never met Margaret Thaler Singer in person but have benefitted from her tremendous knowledge, research and wisdom through her books during a friend's devastating involvement in a cult. At that time the information we were receiving from a government funded agency in the UK was that we and the family were over reacting to a normal situation. 'At least X is not on drugs' we were chided.
We felt misunderstood, insulted and at a total loss for what to do until we contacted another more sympathetic UK cult information service. they provided us with literature and with 'Cults in our Midst' From this and a mass of other literature written by the same author as well as books written by Janja Lalich, Steve Hassan and others we began to understand our situation.
We educated ourselves and were able to reach out to our friend.
We are deeply indebted to Margaret Singer and others who share her concern for providing us with accessible information, advice and concern during this period of our lives. She was obviously an outstanding academic with an ability to clarify and explain serious issues to those in need of information.
May God bless her for caring enough to do that.
We would like to express our sympathy to her family, her friends and her colleagues.

I have known Margaret Singer for 23 years. First as a victim of Scientology where Margaret personally counseled me back to sanity. Second as my mentor where I studied everything she would give me to read on cults and mind control and thirdly as a co-creator of FACTNet where Margaret was always on our advisory board assisting and guiding us to wise, rational decisions and actions.

I can truthfully say I have not met another person so gifted in intelligence and strength and so guided by integrity and courage. Though her courageous educational work Margaret reflected the justice of the Divine at archetypal levels. She truly was her nickname in the movement of the Samurai Grandmother.

I could not have gotten my life back if was not for Margaret's wisdom. FACTNet would not exist now nor, would the good FACTNet has done have ever happened --- had it not been for Margaret.

I as an individual and FACTNet as an organization will honor her memory by doing the best we can to spread her wisdom and balance and, by continuing to help the victims of cults and mind control all over the world.

I was privileged to have had many meetings on her kitchen table and many meals with her. I fell in love with who Margaret was as a person. I will miss those conversations and meetings dearly.

Lawrence Wollersheim as an individual and as a Director for FACTNet

She was a friend. She was no fool. She was a funny lady. She was a trip. And at times she was God's Unified Field for some of us with the great good fortune to stumble onto her. Thanks Margaret.

A Eulogy to Margaret Singer:

http://www.lermanet.com/scientologynews/merck-singer.htm#eulogy

Includes a very funny story of Margaret being deposed by Scientology's Unindicted Co-Conspirator in US vs Mary Sue Hubbard criminal case lawyer, Kendrick Moxon and the imfamous Eugene Ingram...

And a recent time a few years ago that Ms. Singer interceded to help a critic who was set up by Scientology.

Margaret Singer and Richard Ofshe were used by the state of Ohio as expert witnesses in shutting down the Cincinnati branch of Straight, Inc. (a destructive juvenile drug rehabilitation program based on Synanon). I had several phone conversations with Dr. Singer about Straight (and of course about Scientology).

I saw her picture on FACTNet a while back but did not read the article and did not know of her passing until today (Feb 19, 2004). I was shocked and I will grieve for this great lady.

If David Miscaviage can go to his deposition as Admiral Faragut, then Keith Henson can go to his as Bozo the Clown.

I wish that Margaret Singer were still alive today, and able to challenge all the naysayers that can't recognise a cult when they see one, or at times, can't recognise a cult when they've been in one.
I wish she were here to urge Legislators to outlaw cults, especially those who take in the mentally ill , and exploit and ruin their lives. As for the First amendment, there are particular characterisitcs that set cults apart from bona fide religions.
They were laid out by Margaret Singer, and could be used as a base to identify the criminals that start and hide behind cultish practices.
After Heavens Gate (then) President Clinton asked what could be done to prevent this from ever happening again.
I believe that the answer remains, legislation.
