Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman caught again in cult backlash

[April 24, 1998]

Tom Cruise recently visited his wife Nicole Kidman in Washington state during her filming for a new movie, Practical Magic with Sandra Bullock. The movie is being filmed in the small island community of Friday Harbor (population under 4,000), and the couple is staying at the Roach Harbor resort. Filming was originally delayed while Kidman underwent an operation for a cyst, but now the Kidman and Cruise are facing a new problem.

Both Kidman and Cruise are avid promoters of a cult called Scientology. Scientology is infamous for human rights abuses, suicides of members following bizarre initiations, intimidation of critics and former members, concentration camp-like punishment for high level members who show signs of defiance or defecting, and censorship raids on the Internet.

Scientology protestors have showered the tiny Friday Harbor community with leaflets, handing out papers to families and local media. They promise additional protests to provide information on Scientology's abuses and call attention to these celebrities irresponsibly promoting a dangerous cult in a way that targets children and young adults for recruitment.

In response to the Friday Harbor leaflets, Scientology reportedly tried to insulate Cruise and Kidman - two of its top celebrities -- from anti-Scientology protesting. Scientology has sent to Friday Harbor a contingent of its most hard-core handlers and militant staff members, in plain clothes rather than their usual uniforms. Scientology is notorious for controlling every aspect of members' lives. Scientology protesters do not deny or protest Scientology celebrities' freedom to think, speak, and believe as they wish. Protesters are opposed to the ruthless actions of the Scientology cult and celebrities using their star status to promote it.

Protesters believe that as individuals, the celebrities promoting Scientology have every right to immerse, intertwine, and lock their own fates to Scientology's. But as more Scientology victims, victims' families, and average citizens become aware of Scientology's unethical and illegal activities and the coalition of individuals and organizations concerned about Scientology grows, those fates will necessarily include dealing with opposition, protests, and backlash to Scientology's ongoing human right abuse.

In the stream of growing protests against Scientology celebrities, movies starring Cruise and Travolta have already been boycotted. Primary Colors, Travolta's latest box office dud has been plagued by Scientology-borne public relations problems connected to celebrity protests.

Cruise, Kidman, and Travolta are not the only celebrity mass media cult recruiters. They are among a group of celebrities who have been drawn into this secretive Satanic and anti-Christian cult that includes Kirstie Alley, Ann Archer, Jenna Elfman, and many others.

According to a local representative of the protest, the sleepy island of Friday Harbor will soon see more peaceful and lawful surprise protests of these celebrities and their cult-related actions. Other Scientology protest groups around the world vow that opposition will accelerate until Scientology's celebrity promoters -- John Travolta, Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman, Kirstie Alley, Ann Archer, Jenna Elfman, and others -- face the victims of Scientology, their families, and former members in public forums. Such forums could include national TV talk shows like Oprah, Sally Jessie Raphael, and Geraldo. There they will see firsthand the damage and pain caused by the irresponsible use of their fame for cult recruiting. There they can hear about the suicides, lost lives, and nightmares Scientology has caused in so many homes around the world.
