Cult victim collapses
[January 27, 1999]
On January 20, 1999, Thomas Padgett of South Orleans, Massachusetts collapsed from an
episode of syncope, sudden loss of consciousness, caused by heightened stress. Since
leaving Scientology years ago, Padgett has been involved in ongoing legal battles
initiated by his ex-wife, who is still a Scientologist.
A Scientology policy written by founder L. Ron Hubbard states that members are to use the
legal system to harass, ruin, and destroy its perceived enemies, including former members
and critics. This policy may consequently bring the enemies to both silence
and bankruptcy. According to Tom Padgett, Laura Padgett of Madisonville, Kentucky, along
with her parents Carl and Betty Vannoy also of Madisonville, have been engaging him in
civil and criminal litigation for six and a half years, and he sees no end in sight.
On January 19, the Hopkins Circuit Court in Madisonville, Kentucky assessed child support
payments and arrearages far in excess of Padgetts ability to pay. Padgett will
appeal the order; he questions the legal proceedings thus far and points to evidence of
Scientology tampering with judges in other cases. Earlier court orders from the Padgett
case are missing from court records, including an April 4, 1994 order overruling the
inadmissibility of Scientology in the case, and a sustained motion for Laura Padgett and
Scientology to cease harassment of Tom Padgett at his places of residence and work.
Padgetts successful hotel management career was ruined by years of relentless
character attacks against him to his former employers. He has also sustained threats in
the forms of anonymous phone calls, letters, and vandalism of his home; Padgett holds that
the threats have been linked to Scientology by a private investigator.
On January 20, Padgett collapsed in a restaurant and was attended to by other patrons
until medics arrived and brought him by ambulance to Regional Medical Center in
Madisonville. After several hours in the emergency unit, he was admitted into a regular
room for further observations and testing, and his condition became stable. He will
receive follow-up treatment upon returning home to Cape Cod. This is the second time he
has collapsed from syncope. Meanwhile, Padgett, a Presbyterian Christian, has been denied
normal access to his children by his ex-wife. It appears she is following the Scientology
policy of disconnection from non-Scientologist family members.
